  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think it has a bearing on the job and I didn’t say anything about forgiving her. Tell me, would you let a child molester work at a day care center after he/she completes their sentence?
Think about it for a moment: does city council provide any unique opportunity for murder? No. Does the office of the president offer any unique opportunity for corruption? Absolutely.

See, this is where you have failed to grasp that manslaughter is not related to governing while a lifetime of repeated fraud is relevant. In your scenario, Trump is the child molester and the presidency is the day care. You don't seem to have thought through your analogy....

Why does it have to be unique? My issue with her has nothing to do with her committing murder during a council meeting. My problem is that a violent murderer gets to make decisions that affects the lives of the residents of Bangor. But they elected her so they will see what happens.

So does the council job in Bangor.

Your argument is a straw man since my argument never included her murdering someone. I explained it above.

It's just 1 felony. Even 34 felonies doesn't disqualify someone necessarily.
Exactly. Murder is no worse than any other "wrong" thing. It's 2025 people, wake up.

How is a convicted killer even eligible for a political office in America?
Same way a convicted felon was eligible to hold political office of president in America.

What is it you expect will happen? The voters believe she will do the job she is elected to do.

Unless is someone you love that gets murdered. It is daunting how crime now is accepted as par for the course. Sad really.

True but violent murder is a bit more serious.
I still don’t see how it will affect decision making now.

She served her punishment, owns her crime and expresses remorse, has rehabilitated herself from addiction and wants to give back her community through public service.

Does she need to spend the rest of her of her life as a social pariah to satisfy you?

Addiction is more often than not, the result of mental illness, not the other way around.

...How do you know she's mentally stable, behind the scenes? And to be in such a position? Seems like recklessness.

There are many reasons people fall into addiction- stress, anxiety, depression, prescriptions, peer pressure, etc.-you are going to have to support your assertion that most have mental illness. Anyway, it is a city council position and she won’t be making decisions on her own, it will be a consensus with other council members.

But you see, 34 is more than 1. So if we give them 34 pennies, they will gladly give us 1 $100 bill.

Satisfy me? She could be doing something that has nothing to do with making decisions for the people of a city.

True but violent murder is a bit more serious.

Which is why she was charged with manslaughter, the most serious sounding charge.

Why a Democrat? Shouldn't the committee be made up entirely of real true patriots?

Because everyone deserves to have a voice, this is America.

I can’t find the actual case but there is a penchant for prosecutors to deal in a case where the defendant is willing to plead guilty. She might have been charged with murder but pleaded down to manslaughter.

I just don’ t se how it is a problem in this situation. What precludes her from making decisions?

As to murder, we bring back soldiers who kill and call them heroes. If taking a life causes irredeemable damage, and yes, many soldiers do it willfully, then why promote war veterans with kills as great citizens, even leaders?
