  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's just 1 felony. Even 34 felonies doesn't disqualify someone necessarily.
Lol was waiting for the inevitable. The problem is that most leftists here don’t see anything wrong with a killer being elected but have big problems with non violent white collar crime being elected.

I don't see anyone having a problem with Trump's legal eligibility for office, despite his felony convictions.

What is the problem with someone convicted of manslaughter 20 years ago, whos done her time and expressed repentance, going for elected office?

I thought this sort of scenario fits exactly within the Christian view of redemption. As to whether shes genuine, thats best decided by the voters in her vicinity.

Anyone? I’ve heard quite the opposite from the liberals here.

Elected office generally affords a lot more opportunity to commit white collar crime than it does murder but the presidency does offer this unique opportunity. Bangor city council does not.

Which one killed a Canadian citizen because she didn’t like what he said?
Which one is periodically killing people in boats with missiles?

Any elected official can become corrupt even those from a small municipality. The voters for the presidency and a small municipality have the same option to elect or not elect a candidate

What hypocrisy? Is there some other instance where where decades and prison time has passed that you're comparing this to?
Just the severity of the crime and the assumption that she “repented” of her crime.

That's true, but, at the same time, excessive, well-documented past and on-going corruption might serve as a bigger red flag than a decades old manslaughter conviction and rehabilitation.
The voters for the presidency and a small municipality have the same option to elect or not elect a candidate
And?

Hypocrisy requires different responses to at least 2 similar incidents. So whats the other incident you have in mind?

No one is.
That is counter-factual.
Just the severity of the crime and the assumption that she “repented” of her crime.
Where is the hypocrisy? She did her time, got off drugs, stopped drinking and turned her life around. As far as we know, she has not continued her crime spree, while the president has used his office to profit his companies and those of his children.

From the link in the quote in the OP :

Walker is the peer services coordinator for the Bangor Area Recovery Network. She’s in recovery herself from addiction and was incarcerated after being convicted of manslaughter in 2003 — experiences she’s said would help her be a voice on the council for the city’s most vulnerable residents amid intersecting homelessness and addiction crises. Walker is unenrolled in a political party and also named cleaning up public spaces and improving public transit as priorities.
She committed the crime, did the time and dealt with her addiction. She continues in Recovery.
The citizens of Bangor voted her in as there is a problem of homelessness and addiction in the city.

Yes, Christianity offers redemption, those who repent are forgiven of their sins. A government based on Judeo-Christian values should also see that those who repent of their crimes and pay the price should then be allowed to live their new life.

This is from another news outlet:

She has been vocal about her recovery from alcohol addiction and works as the peer services coordinator at the Bangor Area Recovery Network, overseeing the organization’s recovery coaching and recovery justice programs, according to the BDN. She also serves on Penobscot County’s opioid settlement funds committee, which advises the county on how to spend funds meant to address the opioid epidemic. Walker told the BDN she believes her personal history, which also includes having been homeless earlier in her life, could bring a unique perspective to policy and community building with the city’s most vulnerable residents.
Walker turned her life around. She demonstrates in how she is now that regrets her former life and is trying to help others in bad situations.
I applaud people who turned their life around and go from crime and drunkenness to sober and living within the law and helping others.

I am not surprised that FOX news and the NY Post jump on this with the intent to make it a big story. I expect the pathetic from them and some on the right.

It is the business of all Americans. New York City, Bangor, Hamtramck, Dearborn, Portland, San Francisco, the Twin Cities--these are launching points for terrorism and destruction.
Here's coverage from way back:
