Former Pink Floyd songwriter Roger Waters could face prosecution after declaring his support for Palestine Action, a terrorist organization that has been banned by Parliament in the U.K.

Waters posted a video to X on Saturday, in which the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame inductee praised Palestine Action as a "great organization," while also giving kudos to Bob Vylan, who led the Glastonbury Festival crowd in a chant, shouting, "Death, death to the IDF."

Waters said in his video that he was in his studio and was working on a piece of brown cardboard with a Sharpie.

He then switched the camera from his face to the cardboard.

That's quite interesting! I wouldn't expect this at all! hmmm...

Well, Roger Waters is a known, long-time anti-semite... This is nothing new with him. He's been known to wear Nazi SS costumes on stage, on several occasions, and I believe he's been doing it since the 1980's.

David Gilmore, from Pink Floyd, publicly states that he can't stand Roger Waters, and has refused to play with him again.

Waters is a loser.

Is he? He seems to have won at life in a number of ways. I dont know about his personal life tho.

I find it curious that you seem to support state prosecution for basic freedom of speech.

He is a virulent antisemite....

Just like that the UK laws restricting speech are a good thing.

Anything for Israel.
Who said anything about it being "good"? I would say more funny than anything. :D

I’m glad to hear that. David Gilmour is actually my favorite guitar player of all time.

Restrictions on speech are now funny. What happened to that support for free speech?

Well, when they defend that kind of stuff over there, then it's kind of like 'getting what you paid for'. And so over here we laugh. And it's okay, because we're safe from that.

Waters is very good musically too, I'll give him that. Can't deny it.

... His politics, however..? That's a whole other story.

Well, I think the controversy around that stems from the fact that he wears the uniform, but then later defends it with "It's just an artistic expression where I'm playing a fascist character...but it's to show how much I oppose fascism"

1752019289883.png

However, the combination of that plus some of his past statements were enough that German police (Germany has strict laws against anything related to Nazism) opened an investigation against him.

However, his defense of "it's just artistic expression" rings a little hollow given that he's the same guy who wrote "dirty k*ke" on an inflatable pig used as a stage prop for his concert tour, along with other symbols and slogans often associated with antisemitic conspiracy theories, such as dollar signs or the slogan "follow the money" over the the star of David.

He's been in legal trouble in his home country as well

I know people have found Euro / British "hate speech" laws really irritating when applied to those trying to legitimately critique Islam, or even just make fun of it or its prophet. I know I do.

But now we can see certain speech prohibitions are actually kind of handy when Israel is the one being critiqued. Keep those laws in your back pocket, people.

I think we should be able to criticize all of it...

No "circumstances of choice" (which religion most certainly is) should be lent the same protections/insulations as things that are definitively circumstances of birth and can't be changed. Religion is one of those things where it's clearly the former, but people seem to want to treat it as being on-par the latter.

If it's something I choose, and I can change it later, it doesn't deserve special protections in the form of someone else getting "special elevated punishment" if they insult/offend it.

What the UK's populace tolerates is on the UK populace. I don't think being amused by this situation is necessarily an expression of approval for the laws, as ultimately those of us this side of the pond are pretty content to leave policies in the UK to citizens of the UK.

I even go further and would allow for plenty of nasty speech against innate identity features.

What I wont do for a lot of it tho is tolerate for myself nor shed a tear when others want to "cancel" it in the marketplace of entertainment and ideas. But I do think we should be forgiving and not put people on permanent exile as a matter of course.

Im fine with critiquing the policies of other countries just as Im fine with people from abroad pointing out how absurd America can be.

Of course Im content to leave UK policy making to UKsians. I dont expect to have any actually say in it.
