The number of cattle in America has plummeted to its lowest point in decades, sparking concerns among ranchers about the fate of the U.S. beef industry.

"This is a bad situation for America's cattle farmers and America because we're producing 1 billion pounds less beef than we were in this country, just a year ago," John Boyd, Jr., president of the National Black Farmers Association, said Thursday on "Fox & Friends First."

"We're not investing in America's beef and cattle farmers, and Biden policies are hurting America's cattlemen, such as myself. They should be invested in America's cattle farmers and making sure that we have the tools needed to stay on the farm.

The causes are listed in the article.. a drought. Does Biden control the weather now? That's pretty impressive.

The market will handle this. People can live without eating so much beef, if they aren't willing to pay the price. It's not a national crisis.

What specific policies are affecting this industry? What exactly does investing in cattle farmers mean? Americans are choosing other forms of protein for financial and health reasons. Isn’t this just the result of consumer choice?

I don‘t get the point of this uninformative article except to give chatter farmers a platform to complain.

During the pandemic, beef held steady in demand. More people did grilling. Probably because they were bored and there weren't as many restaurants open. Large food companies even went into Central America and slashed and burned the natives lands in order to supply American's demand for beef (one reason among many I made the decision to stop eating meat during the pandemic).

You are right, though... beef isn't a particularly cost-effective source of protein. Per gram of protein hamburger and steak are expensive, even compared to chicken or pork.

I'm unconvinced people would necessarily replace beef with healthier alternatives, like beans, however. The only populations that consume alot of beans in the US are Hispanics and Asians. Even though bean consumption is inversely correlated with colon cancer risk: a 66% reduction in those eating the most beans. If it were a pill advertised by Eli Lili, everybody would be paying $100 a dose.

"... and Biden's policy of 'x' is hurting American cattlemen" would ACTUALLY be a convincing argument. This just sounds like a Trump ad.

But certainly they wouldn't want a communist like Trump getting into office? Like a good Red president he paid out 30 billion to farmers.

That's socialism. You don't want that in America do you?

It seems as if the only thing Biden could influence is inflation--and he is successfully combatting a global inflation crisis more successfully than almost every other advanced country.

And let's face it, probably about 90% of cattle ranchers live in states that are going to vote against Biden, anyway. He has been astonishingly fair in distributing the inflation reduction act funds for infrastructure improvements, rolling his eyes and shaking his head when the representatives of these red states try to claim credit for a law they voted against.

I am satisfied he is doing what he can...and, considering that he is taking whatever steps he can to combat climate change--with its resultant droughts--he is actually doing much, much more than a climate-denier president might.

"Last night I was at the cattle market, in my local township around here in Blackstone, Virginia. A very good market, and I saw that some of the stalls were empty and, and during this time period, we see, the cattle markets just full of livestock. Now we see some empty stalls in there, and it's because we're not producing the beef that we used to," Boyd said.

"I've been farming 41 years and producing good, healthy beef for America, and I'm telling you, this is a time when we should be investing in America's cattle, and we're not doing it."
Economists say demand for beef has remained strong since the COVID-19 pandemic. During lockdowns, people started grilling more.
Beef sold for an average $5 per pound last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Experts predict that prices will climb over the next few years.
"Americans are going to pay the price at their local grocery stores," Boyd said.

"We already are seeing such a steep, hike and beef in this country. And it's because we're not supporting these cattlemen such as myself… the Biden administration, isn't paying attention [to] this national crisis. This is a national crisis for America's cattlemen, and this administration has turned a blind and a deaf ear to something that needs immediate attention."

Here we go again. It rained today in Paignton.

Thanks Biden :(

Still not getting to the point of what is it they want Biden administration to do? Are they looking for subsidies ( but that’s socialism) or a rain dance?

Farmers are always looking for a hand out from other people’s hard earned taxes. Like those single parents and disabled people.

If there was a law it would be against it.

Yeah, who'd have thought that Fox News would be pushing for a black guy to get a government handout? I guess when you're a conservative farmer, it's okay.

Where's your sympathy, or empathy, for American citizen farmers?

The liberals don't seem to mind the billions of dollars of hand-outs and money spent by state and federal governments for illegal immigration, but this is the reaction I see when American farmers are requesting that the government step up and do something to help the cattle ranchers?

Step up and do what exactly? What are they asking for?

That article was a lot of Biden isn’t helping but what have they asked for? Is there organization on the ranchers behalf up in DC or are they just waiting for the administration to know what they need and save them?

Meh…..steak and hamburger is OK…..but I like pork based food better. I love me some Italian cuisine. The world will continue to turn without a buttload of American beef. Ooh..and BBQ baby back ribs….woohoo!

Why do they even need help? Demand for beef is still up, isn’t it? Raise the prices. Problem solved.

Ranchers are already subsidized and beef production causes a bunch of environmental problems. We’d be better off eating much less of it.

Pork sits better in my stomach, but a couple shoulders loaded with boar taint (which is a real thing) were enough to kind of turn me off of it for a while.
