And how is it that his supporters are the only ones who ever seem to have the ‘correct’ interpretation of his words and tweets? It’s like they think we don’t speak English or something.

I think it is difficult at times to understand Trump when he talks. I think that's because he has the speech level of a fourth-grader and he can't help it. He doesn't always speak and communicate coherently, IMO.

He speaks colloquially, just like most of us do on a daily basis, even if we are well educated.

He apparently thinks that being "straight" with the citizens is better than reading everything from a teleprompter like Obama did or Biden tries to do.

You have to be serious Conservative to get the Secret Decoder Ring.

Funny, I have my Grandfathers decoder ring from the Eisenhower/Goldwater era, my dad’s Nixon ring, and my George H. W. Bush ring. Whenever I put a trump talking point in them, all I get is “Error, not a Conservative”, “Error, Not an American, possible drug confused Hippy”, and “Error, not a Republican. None of them will accept the Trump upgrades; they all say the software is pirated from China.

Personally, I would rather him read everything from a teleprompter or read a speech that was written for him. I don't want to hear another one of his alternative versions of American history or hear him confess that he's never understood wind or the noise from wind turbines causes cancer or hear him brag about a border wall surrounding San Antonio. San Antonio is 150 miles from the Mexican border.

Probably best that way. When he does read from a teleprompter he sounds like the kid that didn’t prepare for his book report. His monotone reading of even the simplest words is arguably more distressing than his outright lies and braggadocio we normally get from him.

That's a good point. I didn't think of that when I was writing my post a few minutes ago.

He doesn't merely speak colloquially; he speaks incoherently. I can point to any number of podcasts or interviews where smart, educated people are talking about subjects without a script and they're orders of magnitude more coherent and lucid than Trump. I can think of maybe 1-2 people in my personal life who speak in as rambling and disjointed a manner.

He apparently thinks that being "straight" with the citizens is better than reading everything from a teleprompter like Obama did or Biden tries to do.

If he wanted to be straight with people, he wouldn't lie and fudge things all the time.

Yeh. I think I would also. But if this is his way, like the phony Southern accent was Obama's go-to on certain occasions, I think we all can live with it.

What is not right and fair, is when commentators start in with the predictable "he lied!" nonsense just because they find a way to interpret some colloquialism differently from how it was intended and which most listeners understood perfectly well.

I was listening to one of his daily updates on the Coronavirus crisis the other day and he said, obviously off the cuff, that the airplane or truck he was speaking about was "as long as this rose garden" (gesturing towards the White House's rose garden.)

Immediately, I thought that it wouldn't be very long before some CNN type would be saying "The President lied again! The rose garden is actually six yards shorter than that truck."

On March 24, Trump bragged that we've done more testing in eight days than South Korea has done in eight weeks'.

This is not true.

As of March 24, South Korea had tested 348,582 people. From March 15-24, we tested about 331,000. That might not seem like much, but when you consider the differences in population, South Korea tested a much higher percentage of theirs than we have.

It's a blatant lie, one of many, and his defenders just ignore it and pretend like the man is more honest than Abe. Boggles the mind.

It’s hard to believe that there are still people who are defending the way this idiot talks. I guess the need to feel vindicated in the choice of “your guy” supersedes the part of the brain controlling logic.

He's not being "straight" with the citizens. He may not be scripted, but he's not being honest.

If most of the people you know speak like Trump, then that is telling. Most of the people I speak with don't speak like that. They are more articulate and careful with language than Trump is.

Like when the President says that he’s fighting to keep social security but submits budget proposals that deeply cut benefits...yeah.

I really wonder if people just can't tell the difference and aren't used to hearing intelligent people speak or reading what they write. I hear folks like Limbaugh and Hannity and see pieces from Breitbart or "Diamond and Silk" and I wonder who the heck thinks this all constitutes insightful, intelligent commentary. Forget whether or not it agrees with your political views; it's just stupid.

Politics is a subject that requires an understanding that conflicting constituencies are vying for control/power and that we need to be able to reason together to navigate the vicissitudes of daily life and have a rational and functionally intact society that allows for individual expression but without chaos.

The “problem” (such as we have) is that politics is “popular” with people who cannot have this level of understanding and need things to be simple and easily digested.
