What's the death rate from COVID-19?
The largest study on COVID-19 cases to date provides new details on the severity of the illness, including its death rate and who is most susceptible.

The study researchers, from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, analyzed information from 44,672 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in China that were reported between Dec. 31, 2019 and Feb. 11, 2020. Among these cases, there were 1,023 deaths, resulting in an overall death rate of 2.3%.

That's much higher than the death rate of flu, which is around 0.1% in the U.S., according to The New York Times.

However, the new study found that the death rate from COVID-19 varied by location. In Hubei Province, where the outbreak began, the death rate was 2.9%, compared with just 0.4% in other provinces — a 7-fold difference.

The study also showed that older adults have been hit hardest by COVID-19. Among those ages 80 and older, the death rate was 14.8%, compared with 8.0% for those ages 70 to 79; 3.6% for those ages 60 to 69; 1.3% for those ages 50 to 59; 0.4% for those ages 40 to 49, and 0.2% for those ages 10 to 39. No deaths have been reported among children from birth to age 9.

However, some experts have estimated that the number of COVID-19 cases could be much higher than what has been officially tracked and reported, according to the BBC. If that's the case, then the death rate could be lower than what's reported in this study.

...in summary, it's still early to make any firm conclusions given the variance in the data. Meanwhile, the CDC is doing it's job: inform the public of the potential dangers so we as individuals, local governments etc can take appropriate steps.

Yes...but there is one conclusion already I'd use today: if in old age, it seems to be more dangerous. Just from that, if I were 70+, I'd plan to lower risk in more stringent ways, even if it meant having to have groceries delivered at extra expense when it shows up in your city, etc.

Your link doesn't have evidence that ties Rush to Putin. Do you have other evidence to examine on that point?

Don't really care where he gets it from. As soon as his supporters start dying from his "don't worry. it's only a cold" they'll leave him in droves, and then he lives his last days unemployed and vilified.

I actually like Rush, but this is ticking me off. All of us should be preparing now, before crap hits the fan. Once your neighborhood has a few known cases of coronavirus, the store shelves will be empty. It will be too late to buy food or medicine. At least some people will believe him, and may end up suffering in the future if the virus really is bad and they don't even have any food stocked up at home, and can't get any, because all of the stores are empty.

No, lots of his supporters have a mindset totally infected by tribalism so they believe what they're told. All he'd have to do is concoct another lethally stupid conspiracy theory to explain why ppl are dying when it's "just a cold" & ppl will just eat that up.

Folks, the Corona Virus has no vaccine and no specific treatment and spreads easily. There is currently no stopping it once it gets going as it has except supporting those that get ill. Preventing it can only be done by avoiding other people.

The impact caused due to drops in productivity in China are for real. Our dependence on cheap Chinese labor is being displayed.

If there were not an election coming up, I doubt that very many people would be ignoring the preparations that the Trump administration has already been working on or the request for adequate funding from Congress which as already been made in order to fight the threat posed by the virus.

Oh I'm sure. Quarantines, martial law, concentration camps. Just like China. Perhaps less people should be ignoring them.

For yrs Rush has trash-talked scientists & fueled scientific illiteracy. Of course he is getting treatment for his advanced lung cancer, treatment developed by scientists with a depth of expertise in biology. Treatment that is expensive but he has the privilege of being able to afford. If he gets the coronavirus, I doubt he'll still be likening it to a cold. But all the others suffering from it, they just are being extra to hurt the real victim of this all, Trump. /s (again)
