But I have had some undergrad work in bio and DNA. (40+ YEARS AGO) Enough to get a fair idea of the general workings.

Don't know. Don't care. It you're truly interested (and I don't think you are), there's a site you can search any two living things, and it calculates how distantly related they are.

I have, and I suspect that the submarine built from modified truck plans would be distinguishly different than a submarine designed and built ab initio as a submarine--even though they function about the same look about the same from the outside..

Actually, we are genetically closest to Chimpanzees. I do not consider them "great apes."

Chimpanzees are also "apes" (The popular name for the Family Hominoidea).

Physically, they are smaller than we are but they are still Hominidae. They are classed as "great apes" (the popular and somewhat inaccurate name for Hominidae) to distinguish them from the "lesser apes" (Hylobatidae) which are all generally smaller than the "great apes" though there are other important differences as well.
