Re: Judges 13:

THIS is an intriguing chapter, first there's the woman (Manoah's wife) who was barren (ever notice the similarities of the barren women mentioned in the Old Testament, and how they are visited by angels and told they would, incredulous as it may seem, CONCEIVE?) Isn't that precious that God makes it a point to tell them in such a glorious way, that their days of grief are over, and that they will conceive, when probably they thought they never would?

So the woman is told that she would have a son and he would be a Nazarite (which means "consecrated to God") and that he would be so from his birth till the day of his death.

What's interesting is that God mooooved on behalf of the Israelites with the birth of Samson and that he would eventually be God's champion for Israel. And it appears that God did this without being asked to and without the Israelites crying out to Him. This just demonstrates how inexplicable God's grace and mercy is.

And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman.

Judges 13 verse 3

The angel of the Lord appeared unto these parents:-

1/ Samson's mother.
2/ Issac's father Abraham.
3/ The father of John the Baptist.
4/ Mary the mother of Jesus.

Judges Chapter 14

Outof the eater came forth meat
And out of the strong came forth sweetness

Judges 14 verse 14

This was a riddle set by Samson to the Philistines. But he told his wife and so the Philistines got the right answer by trickery.

I have been reading the Story of Samson in Judges Chapter Fourteen. His parents did not want him to marry a Philistine, but Samson insisted. Verse four says: "His parents did not know that this [marriage] was from the Lord, who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel."

The thoughts that went through my mind as I was reading verse four was: I had not realised the Lord sanctioned such marriages; I had always believed one had to stick rigidly to God's words i.e. the scriptures on these matters. This has been a bit of a revelation to me.

Samson is confronted by a young lion and verse six says: "The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat."

Going back to the story of Samson, verse nineteen struck me: The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon Samson. He went down to Ashkelon, struck down thirty of Philistines, stripped them of everything and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle."

As I read about Samson tearing the lion apart, I was reminded of young David's words to King Saul: "When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it." 1 Sam 17:34-35.

When the Spirit of the Lord comes upon a man, no enemy can conquer him.

what a glorious comparison, between Samson and David! And amen about when the Spirit of the Lord comes upon a man, no enemy can conquer him! Also reminds me of why David weren't skeered o' big ol' baaad Goliath, when the whole army of the king was quakin' in their armor.....David KNEW Who it was that was gonna give him the victory....Saul's army didn't trust God, and THAT was to the shame of them all....

Judges Chapter 15

With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps,
With the jawbone of an ass I have slain a thousand men.

Judges 15 verse 16

I try to imagine Samson killing thousand men with the jaw bone of an ass. He was obviously a very strong man?

But we know Samson received his strength from the Spirit of the Lord. He was not strong when three thousand men of Judah came to tie Samson up and hand him over to the Philistines.

Verse 12 says: "They [men of Judah] said to him [Samson], 'We've come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.'"

As I read about Samson being bound by the men of Judah, I remembered the apostle John's words: "Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him."

I believe the reason why Samson killed the thousand Philistines with the jaw bone of an ass, was not simply because he was angry with the Philistines because they interfered in his personal life.

Judges Chapter fourteen verse gives us the answer: "The Lord, who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel."

Samson was God's servant; we read about Samson calling himself the Servant of the LORD in Judges Chapter fifteen, verse fifteen: Samson cried out to the Lord, "You have given your servant this great victory."

Yes Brinny, I thought the comparison between Samson and David was quite glorious. Today, whilst reading Judges Chapter 15, I saw a compression between Samson and Jesus. The men of Judah bound Samson to hand him over to the Philistines (V.13), and Jesus was bound and handed over to His enemies. (John 18:12).

And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took fire brands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.

Judges 15 verse 4

Samson's father in law gave Samson's wife to someone else. In anger Samson sent foxes dragging firebrands through the cornfields of the Philistines.

As a reprisal the Philistines burned Samson's wife and Samson's father in law to death.

This made Samson even more angry. Samson then killed a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of an ass.

Judges 15 verse 16

Judges 15:

Wow! Samson's father in law did an OUTAGEOUS thing......what was he thinking, in giving Samson's wife to Samson's companion??!! Had he done lost his MIND??!! Wasn't that an outrageously and blatantly insulting thing to do to his son-in-law?

It's interesting to see how closely he walked with God and that his confidence in God's provision was so unwavering, that he boldly told God of his need for water and God responded so quickly......reminds me of how quickly God answered Jabez' prayer.....

You know Brinny, I am so glad I read your post, because when I was reading Judges chapter 15 this morning, I read it: as Samson's father who had given his wife to a companion. See how easy it is to read something wrongly?

So, see what happened to the Samson's father-in-law and and Samson's wife: (V.6) "So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death."

Now it makes perfect sense why Samson was so incredibly angry with the Philistines. I still cannot understand how I missed all of this when I was reading it morning.

I just said to Brinny, I completely misunderstood what I was reading this morning in Judges chapter 15. I have learnt from this I need to read things more carefully.

Really :-O you too! I don't feel so bad about my mistake now. I think perhaps I should read a summary before I post my thoughts next time lol.
