• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I've been feeling very depressed with intense suicidal thoughts since February. My doctor just changed my anti-depressant from Pristiq to Wellbutrin. Unfortunately I'm still not feeling any better. I still have intense suicidal thoughts that I think may lead to me acting on them. I really don't know what else I can do. I'd like to continue with school in the fall but not if I'm still feeling this way. I'm giving thought to having ect treatments again but I don't know. I hate the hospital.

Hi Paul:

I wonder that your doctor hasn't moved you to a more modern antidepressant. Also, when you switch medications is a very delicate time, but in a few weeks the new antidepressant will kick in and things will be better. In the meantime, maybe ask your doctor for something to help you short-term.

I believe ECT works very well for awhile, but it is pretty drastic stuff. The effects also wear off in time. I got shocked for a very different reason (defibrillator), but I noticed that my mood lightened dramatically for a few months afterwards. So yes, versus the idea of suicide, that is a possibility but I would talk to your doctor first.

Peace

I'm sorry you are struggling with this brother, it's horrible when those feelings seem overwhelming. I agree with Robert, it takes time for new meds to start working, give it a few weeks. Do you have any strategies to deal with the thoughts when they are strong? Please find a safe place or person, or go to the hospital when you need to. I know that it isn't much fun being in hospital, but if it keeps you safe until things are more stable, then it's worth putting up with it.

Praying for you

Whenever you have strong impulses please call your doctor or a hotline. If the medication you are on isn't working then the dose may need to be increased or another one can be tried. God loves you, trust in him and keep visiting and talking with that doctor and things will get better.

God Bless, I'll pray for you.
