  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dick Cheney, influential Republican vice president to George W. Bush, dies

Your favorite kind of guy: one who offers "the left" things to both hate and, lately, love.
He was way too hawkish for my liking...

I know some on the left half of the spectrum started spontaneously liking him after he and his daughter became vocal Trump opponents, but I've always thought that was a bit revisionist and short-sighted.

When you send that many people to their death based on lies and faulty intel, he would have to do something pretty spectacular like cure cancer to redeem himself in my book.

Thoughts and prayers to the family.

If this is a eulogy thread, then my actual thoughts can wait a decent amount of time - at least until after burial. If this is a bash the dead thread, I'll leave that to others.

It's just a "newsworthy thread" like when any other prominent politician passes away.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday afternoon only that Trump was "aware" that Dick Cheney died.

"I know the president is aware of the former vice president's passing. And as you saw, flags have been lowered to half staff in accordance with statutory law"

Dick Cheney funeral: Biden to attend, Bush to deliver tribute

The service is being held Thursday at the National Cathedral.

Former President George W. Bush, who Cheney served for two terms, will offer a tribute at the service. According to the cathedral's program, Cheney's daughter, former congresswoman Liz Cheney, and his grandchildren will also give remarks.

In addition to Bush and Biden...

former House Speakers John A. Boehner, a reliable Republican ally during the Bush-Cheney years, and Nancy Pelosi, a staunch Democratic adversary at the time," he adds.

Also expected to be in attendance: former Vice President Kamala Harris, a year after "Mr. Cheney stunned many Americans by announcing that he would vote for her against Mr. Trump," Baker writes.

Three other former vice presidents will be on hand as well: Al Gore, a Democrat, and Mike Pence and Dan Quayle, both Republicans.

Vice President JD Vance, however, was invited, but hasn't said if he would attend even though it's custom for the sitting VP to "honor the service of someone who once held the same office," Baker notes.

Odd. I read VP Vance wasn't invited, nor was President Trump. Hmmm...

True, the Guardian says

Donald Trump and JD Vance have been snubbed, by not being invited to former vice-president Dick Cheney’s funeral, taking place on Thursday, according to a White House official familiar with the matter.

So it's Guardian versus NYT. Or possibly AlterNet isn't smart enough to read the NYT correctly.

Since it's apparently acceptable to use funeral situations as a means for political posturing based on the invite list...
