  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Walz who said, "Mind your own business" set up snitch line during COVID

At the campaign event at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, Walz said this:

In Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and their personal choices that they make. Even if we wouldn’t make the same choice for ourselves, there’s a golden rule: Mind your own damn business.
This statement would seem at odds with Walz's implementation of a COVID hotline, in which citizens were encouraged to "snitch" on their neighbors for not obeying COVID restrictions.

In wake of the governor's stay-at-home order, which still allows people to leave their homes for fresh air and runs to stores for essential needs, a hotline has been established that allows anyone to report groups of people that aren't following social distancing measures.
The hotline number is 651-793-3746. People can also submit reports via email to sahviolations@state.mn.us.
One has to wonder if Walz is in favor of "minding your own ... business" or tattling on people who don't do what the government tells them to do.

Pregnancy isn't contagious. COVID was spread quickly. Hospitals were full. People were dying.
Because the former president looked at COVID as an economic problem that would create vacancies in his hotels and slow the economy, we had the highest death rates in the developed world. And people were confused and didn't know what to do.
If someone's actions harm others, it is everyone's business.
And business openings were further delayed when people failed to wear masks and social distance.
Flouting laws is a new conservative act of defiance. My state actually passed a law saying that any gun laws passed after July, 2021 would not be valid in the state. Texas does the same. This shouldn't happen. Rebellious conservative governments can't decide what laws they won't follow.
Bit to return to the subject, if you put others in danger it is my business.

So is it safe to say you're not in favor of minding your own business?

You've severely embellished what happened with COVID, as did the governments and "experts" at the time. No one needed to be "reported" on a hotline for daring to go outside to a lake in Minnesota in the summer.

Walz actions probably saved several thousand lives.

Minnesota has the fourth LOWEST Covid death rate in the US. At 31.3 deaths/100,000 its death rate is less than half that of the worst state (Kentucky 72.9).

I understand that there are Covid deniers out there. I had three family members die from Covid. I can not deny. That being said, if Walz put strict restrictions in place to save lives, I commend his efforts even if it means reporting " bad actors" .

I see PA is pretty far down that list. That's where I live. Granted, we didn't have snitch lines, but our governor instituted all the same things that Walz did that you claim "saved several thousand lives". Why did we fare so much worse? I mean, Minnesota had a death rate of 31.3/100,000 and PA had 47.5/100,000. Why didn't the actions of Governor Wolf save those lives?

Different geography, different population densities and distribution, different early history of the virus spread, many things. 'Virtuous Walz' saving Minnesota with draconian measures may play well for Democrats these days but comparing Minnesota to Nebraska, which was considered 'The Free State of Nebraska' as opposed to 'The Democratic People's Socialist Republic of Minnesota' the Covid death rates were not all that different. No need to be all that draconian I guess. But it fitted Walz to go all Stazi and feel like he was doing something. Turns out he didn't save all that many people while taking their liberty away.

Everyone should be concerned about public health.
The faster we got a grip on the pandemic, the faster our economy could recover.

Or, and hear me out, we could have followed well-established public health principles that had been tried and tested over decades and NOT destroyed the economy in the first place. Instead, we implemented untested, ineffective and damaging "lockdowns" that not only didn't stop COVID, they also had the nasty side effect of economic destruction and were the precursor to record inflation.

As per usual, the news is only reporting the cherry-picked details.

Some cities were receiving too many 911 calls to report violations and 311 was being inundated, so the state set up a number for people to call.

In Minneapolis, that consisted of a group of people who "They could be saying hi to our park users, seeing how everyone's doing or educating them on some of the guidelines we'd like to see people continuing to do," said Alison Warren, the city's recreation manager... On nearly 200 calls, no citations have been issued."

In Stillwater, their statement was: "It's an educational thing," said Ted Kozlowski, Stillwater's mayor. "They're like, 'Hey come on guys, get out of here. Let's separate.'"

Bonus: by creating the hotline, they were able to prevent the furloughing of about 100 people and did not overwhelm 911 in the critical early days of COVID.

Different geography, different population densities and distribution, different early history of the virus spread, many things.

You just listed four confounders. That would seem to indicate that one can't just look at mitigation measures implemented and death rates to determine whether those measures were effective.

Informing on your neighbor to the government.

Yeah, that is freedom!
So it's safe to say you're against neighbors reporting neighbors for abortions in Texas, or reporting people who are suspected of helping people get abortions, right?

Are we just going to gloss over the fact that "social distancing" was just made up out of whole cloth?

Let alone the destruction of civil liberties, and censorship.

A lockdown at the very first stage of this might have been productive for a week or so, including aggressive contact tracing and airline flight restrictions. But contact tracing was done away with by AIDS because it is so discriminatory and airline flight restrictions are so racist.

Since when is quarantine not a well-established public health principle? Lockdowns didn't even go that far. You certainly wouldn't have wanted me to be in charge during the height of COVID-19, I would have been pushing tight quarantines all over the place to try to keep the virus contained as much as possible.

As much fun as it is to watch you drag the goal post to a new spot, you have to be clear on what you're railing against... Was it the snitch line (as the OP said) because people deserve privacy, or is it that social distancing is fake and you didn't like to do it, which is a claim that wasn't mentioned anywhere in your post or article.

Both are wrong, obviously, but you still have to be a bit clearer about what is getting your dander up so people can reply accordingly.
