Renowned researchers David Chalmers and Anil Seth join Brian Greene to explore how far science and philosophy have gone toward explaining the greatest of all mysteries, consciousness--and whether artificially intelligent systems may one day possess it.

This program is part of the Big Ideas series, supported by the John Templeton Foundation.

Try not to get stuck focusing on such technicalities. Rather, enjoy the conversation.

Did you watch it?

And, if so, may I ask if they mentioned the Dispensation of Consciousness, which is the first of our seven dispensations?

Then it's just 45 minutes of academic fluff, isn't it?
Sorry, I am not too interested in this useless exchange with you. BTW, you mentioned the dispensation of consciousness, while its actually a dispensation of conscience - a totally unrelated concept.

It's THE -- not A.

But I'll acknowledge your lack of interest in this "useless exchange" [sic].

I don't walk into a sports bar, listen to some of the conversations, then declare that sport is, overall, a waste of time and money, and the abode of dull people who lack the smarts to do something useful. Now there are three reasons for that: first, I don't believe it is true, second I might get beat up, but the most important reason is that it is discourteous and self-centred. It is a pity you don't share that latter outlook.

The greatest of all mysteries is consciousness?
That consciousness is the greatest of all mysteries is something I tend to agree with. It's a basic part of life yet we don't know what it is.

And, as asked in the video, someday out there in the future will AI develop consciousness?

You would if they claimed the quarterback didn't exist.

Who is the quarterback in that video?

God or man?

I take it you claim its existence on cause-and-effect then?

And, as asked in the video, someday out there in the future will AI develop consciousness?

In my opinion ... no.

Not a chance.

Nope, not at all.
Consciousness in the way I experience it is a component of existence. It's all One.

And I'm truly sorry for that. We are arrogant and judgmental and I personally feel we have contributed to causing hate. Peace
Based on what I can recall of your posts our views often, though not always, differ. However, as far as I can recall you are always respectful and present your views in a reasonable and reaseoned manner. Members such as yourself are one of the main reasons I come to CF, because they give me a view and better understanding of alternate viewpoints. I thank you for that. I regret that a small number of members believe difference of view must be grounds for aggression, provocation and the sound of a broken record. It changes my experience here from the positive to a depressing bewilderment at human fraility.

God or man?
Incorrect. In the highly improbable event that the patrons of the bar claimed the quarterback did not exist I would politely ask them to explain all the contrary evidence that the quarterback did exist. For example, the quarterback position listed on the teamsheet, the reference to the quarterback by the commentators.

The entire point of the video is to declare that we do not know the nature of the quarterback. It is an honest, transparent, inquisitive position as is all good science. But you use it as an opportunity to make your standard petty denigration of science and scientists. It is rude. Please stop.

To answer your question, No AI will never be conscious but will do a very good imitation of consciousness.

To answer the opening post question, this is my answer;

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Other verse that relates to consciousness and the human spirit;
Job 32:8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.
Job 33:4: "The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life."

Ecclesiastes 12:7: "Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it."

Consciousness IS from GOD!

You seem to be confused by the word "creates", thats probably why you think that biblical verses can be useful for the topic.

Read it as "what constitutes consciousness", to understand the OP better, when you are unwilling to watch the video.

Sometimes "academic fluff" is anything that goes over one's head. Easier to be dismissive rather than to listen.
