  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thar's right, less stable, more extreme at both ends but, when averaged globally, quite a bit warmer over all.
Apparently, it was normal to have heavy snow several decades ago every winter.

In my short lifetime, not so much. :/

Nah. God just open one them there winders to let the heat out.
I keep seeing the very large fans, often a hundred or more!, (that must use tons of electricity). I guess they’re using these to “cool the earth”.

That is simply not true. It is simply squelched, just like they did with Covid information. The biden laptop, and on and on and on and on and on... This is the world we live in today.
This will get you started: Real Climate Science

Tony Heller, who runs 'Real Climate Science', is a out and out fabulist (and conspiracy theorist). His reporting of anything climate related is not to be trusted.
https://realclimatescience.com/#gsc.tab=0
And there are tons of youtube channels devoted to this that can clear it up very well. I've got an extensive list.

Are there any in that extensive list from active, publishing climate scientists?

That's simply an ad-hominem attack on him. What about the information he offers? And what do you mean by "conspiracy theorist"? FWIW, I have an interesting book I acquired about 40 years ago titled, "None dare call it conspiracy". Worth a read...

A fun phrase I recently picked up: I need a new conspiracy theory because all my old ones came true. :)

Lastly, whoever told you his climate related stuff is not to be trusted has poisoned the well. One of his strengths is the diversity of reliable information he offers, like what is included in the links I provided.

The well has been poisoned - by people like Heller.

Yes, that is funny. I can't think of any conspiracy theories it could apply to; it would be funnier for me if I could.

Well, all I know is that the snowpack was too low this year, so my state (Washington) called an emergency drought back in April. The snowpack has been decreasing for a while, and many of the mountains are bare with no glaciers left.

The heavily populated cities, from Tacoma to Everett, are not included since they have reservoirs kept at higher levels with rainwater. Still, I am cutting back on my water usage anyway.

I fear this will be the norm in the future.

12 in a row. That's a year.
Another way of looking at the past year's departure from 'climate as usual'.

12 in a row. That's a year.

The planet just marked a “shocking” new milestone, enduring 12 consecutive months of unprecedented heat, according to new data from Copernicus, the European Union’s climate monitoring service.

Every single month from June 2023 to May 2024 was the world’s hottest such month on record, Copernicus data showed.

Make that a baker's dozen. IOW, we've had two hottest ever Junes in a row. Moreover, this now marks 12 months in a row over +1.5C.

Earth surpasses 1.5 degrees C of warming for 12 consecutive months

A stifling month marked by heat waves and heat deaths, June was also about a quarter of a degree warmer than the previous hottest June on record in 2023, according to a report from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. It is the 13th straight month to break its own monthly heat record.

The planet’s persistent soaring temperature is “more than a statistical oddity and it highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate,” Copernicus’ director Carlo Buontempo said in a statement.

That's simply an ad-hominem attack on him.

It's not. It's and apt, descriptive label.
What about the information he offers?

He doesn't offer information. Tony Heller isn't out there doing primary research, he recycles content created by other people.

As such the "information" he offers is conspiratorial - and often just flat out false or incorrect - rehashing of the work of others.

And what do you mean by "conspiracy theorist"?

Someone who believes that there are groups who are coordinating actions in secret to manipulate information/events to achieve certain ends.

In Tony Heller's case, he believes almost every conspiracy theory about global warming/climate change that you could name - including ones that are mutually contradictory. He's variously said that there is "no global warming", that the world has been cooling since the early 1900s, that record temperatures since the 1990s are from NASA manipulating the current and past climate record. He's also argued that climate change is an attempt to impose "socialism", to transfer wealth to "the elites" or to transfer wealth from the developed world to the less developed world.

In addition to that, he's espoused conspiracy theory beliefs around:

Sandy Hook & Gun Control
The Holocaust & Gun Control
The JFK assassination
COVID-19 and the safety of MRNA vaccinations
2020 US election and the January 6th attack on the US Capitol
Barack Obama/birtherism
The Deep State
ANTIFA/White Nationalists/Proud Boys

FWIW, I have an interesting book I acquired about 40 years ago titled, "None dare call it conspiracy". Worth a read...

HOLY MOLY. None Dare Call It Conspiracy is a Bircher-ist paranoid fantasy fever dream. I can think of less accurate conspiracy books I've read, but none that made it into print. About the best you could say of it was that at least it was short.

A fun phrase I recently picked up: I need a new conspiracy theory because all my old ones came true. :)

No-one told me his climate related stuff is not to be trusted. I discovered that all by myself. Looking at facts around climate change is a part of my job - so I know when someone is lying to me.

Tony Heller is woozle merchant. He draws faulty interpretations of climate disinformation vomited up from (generally) fringe corners of the internet. He then recycles/repackages it and then pushes it out to his followers. The rest of the climate change denial sphere then picks it up and repeats it.

It's a series of woozles. Woozles all the way down.

I'm gonna need links to the claims in your post.

But I should add this: he offers information in the same way CBS news offers information. I love his bringing up old newspaper articles about the climate from the last 150 years. He didn't create the info, but he made it available to people. He and Judith Curry are my two favorites.

Why melting ice sheets are making our days longer [by tiny tiny amounts]

[TL;DR version: melting polar caps redistribute mass towards the equator, further away from the axis of rotation, so like a skater putting their arms out, the rotation slows.]

The melting of Earth’s large ice masses has made days ever so slightly longer in recent decades and shifted Earth’s axis of rotation, according to two recent studies. The lengthening and shifts may be imperceptible to humans, but they can affect the accuracy of navigation systems or throw off calculations for satellite launches and landings. This extra slowing of Earth’s rotation is likely to stay for at least the next few decades, even if humans’ effect on the climate slows.

Using past observations and projection models, they found the ice loss added time to Earth’s day between 0.3 to 1 milliseconds per century through the 20th century. But since 2000, the rate has accelerated to 1.33 milliseconds per century.

For billions of years, the speed of our planet’s rotation has dominantly been influenced by our moon. The moon yanks on the planet’s oceans and causes the tides to bulge, creating drag and slowing down Earth’s spin. Earth’s rotation has been predictably and consistently slowing down because of the moon’s gravitational forces — around 2.40 milliseconds per century, according to the study’s authors.

Needles dethrones Phoenix as hottest U.S. city in July

Needles averaged 103.2 degrees in July, surpassing Phoenix’s highest average temperature last July of 102.7 degrees, according to the Arizona State Climate Office.

The [Twitter] post also referenced two other cities, Palm Springs and Blythe, and welcomed them to the club of cities with average temperatures of at least three digits for an entire month.

“Welcome?” the post said.

Earth surpasses 1.5 degrees C of warming for 12 consecutive months

Good news everyone, 2024 was not the hottest July, August, September or October. Those were all 2023.

The bad news is that every month in 2024 has been at or above the +1.5 degree C, and the year as a whole is bound to be as well, the first calendar year to average above that mark, following on the first 12 consecutive months to be above the mark.

And it's visually very clear how much the last half of 2023 and all of 2024 have departed from every other year since 1940:

1730990353634.png

Climate scientists working at the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service have announced that 2024 is "virtually certain" to be the warmest year on record.

According to its ERA5 dataset, the agency said it was "virtually certain" that the annual temperature for 2024 will be more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level, and it will likely be more than 1.55 C above.

The first western govt leader to go up in front of the world and call climate change a hoax. All the rest have to go along with the CO2 is a pollution narrative and spend billions on reducing it.
Well, it is either spend billions now or suffer later. Heck, many are suffering now.
