I really don't know the parameters
My lady does all the canning (I'm just the grunt...toting full canners around to where she needs 'em)
But, she marveled at how easy it was to can the deer meat up there.
Deer meat of itself is an easy put up
Gotta pressure can, but no need to add water (it makes it's own juices)
Just a bit of salt
Awesome. That is good since the deer meat is easier to pack as you said. I know nothing about canning, but it is a fascinating science. Science is my favorite subject.

Ooh, Mr. Gary K's post about deer parasites kinda grosses me out. Hence why I buy store bought meat such as chicken and bratwurst. :)

Yeah, since my cabin living days, I've pretty much gone vegan.
Not a big concern about parasites so much, but just can no longer bring myself to down those fine beings

Matter of fact, I seem to be feeding them
Found out they have an affinity for the cracked corn in my bird feeders

The black tail here in town are treated like sacred cows
They go from house to house, grazing the lawns

I almost hate to do this to you.
No worries
I've hunted and fished most my life
Seen those things in both
They'll cook
My meats are always well done

But, yeah, going vegan is the better way
No argument

Agreed. Deer are so adorable, even though they always scurry across the highways. By the way, going vegan must have been still difficult though. Some vegans are for instance against wearing leather such as belts and jackets. I am not vegan, but I have heard of vegans that wear second hand leather jackets. Me personally, I have a leather jacket that is second hand, cos second hand leather doesn't smell as strong and is better for the environment. It is probably 25-30 years old.

What is your opinion on second hand leather?

Good story. When I was growing up we lived up in the mountains every summer until I entered the 3rd grade. Every evening the deer came around as we left out watermelon and cantaloupe rinds for them. By the end of the summer they would be tame enough to take them out of your hands.

What great memories.

Great photos once again.

Aww, so wholesome that the deer approached you when you gave them the melon rinds. :) Shows that deer can form a tight bond with humans, or they just like being given free food.

A little of both I think. To me it demonstrates the love of God He put in all of our hearts before sin came into our world. I can't think of many animals that live solely for themselves as we hear stories of mother animals adopting and feeding babies of different species. Man is the only being that does that, or most of us anyway.

Agreed. Animals seem to hold innocence compared to us humans. Humanity may be a bit more self serving. But hey, both you and Gary O. seem to be nice guys who would treat fellow humans and animals with dignity. :) I remember animal planet on TV before we ditched Dish Network, and the orangutans always took care of each other, no matter what.

Unless there's a buck with his harem

Had a stare down with a buck up at the cabin

Tricky situation

Like most things in life, everything is a combination of multiple factors. Maybe 70% of the reason the deer approach you is for free food, while 30% is bonding. :) I don't know the exact percentages, just using them as an example.

But wow, that buck stare down sounds scary. Bucks are bigger than one might expect.

The biggest buck I ever saw was back in the 70s. It was a huge mule deer up in northwest Montana. He came down off the bank ahead of us and was bouncing down the road with that stiff legged bounce they use. He was in the prime of his life and must have been a 12 point buck. I'm not sure as I had buck fever just from seeing him and I've never been a hunter. He was a magnificent animal and must have gone down the road a 1/4 mile in front of us in broad daylight. One of the best animal sights of my life.

How many pounds did you think the buck weighed? I am not a hunter either, but would love to see a 12 pt. buck.

Good trophy for most hunters
I just hunted when I needed to feed self and family.
Nice. It is good to be self sufficient when necessary. :) Sadly, some people merely hunt to get the biggest rack hung up in their basement. Luckily, I haven't encountered anyone like that. Hunting is for food, not showing off rack sizes, and I am glad you used hunting for sustenance.
