  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Josh Hawley, "the GOP lawmaker — who majored in history at Stanford, before getting a law degree from Yale — honored Independence Day by publishing a tweet that quoted Patrick Henry saying the United States was “founded ... on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Henry, however, never said any such thing: Hawley was actually quoting a report from a white nationalist publication that ran in 1956 — more than a century and a half after the founding father’s death."

Complete quote:
“this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Historian Seth Cotlar noted that the quotation actually came from the April 1956 issue of a virulently antisemitic white nationalist magazine, The Virginian.

It's a great demonstration that Christian Nationalism is a relatively new idea, and those seeking to smash it into the mouths of those who founded a secular republic will find themselves promoting falsehoods (if not worse, i.e. racism and fascism).

The Constitution and Declaration are Enlightenment/secular documents that do not mention Jesus Christ ("the year of our Lord" is about as close as it gets to a mention). They certainly don't entail anything that would support the idea that their purpose was to form a "Christian nation," whatever that's supposed to mean. The Declaration mentions God and the divine, but the signers understood "God" in various ways and were not all confessing Christians.

The kingdoms of this world depend on the use of force to secure their power, which is contrary to Christ whose kingdom operates through love. In essence, those who want a "Christian nation" via the power and force of government are rejecting the kingdom of God.

Looks like a very desperate attempt to paint Sen. Hawley as a racists. Pretty sad.
He is a highly educated man, yet he chose to use that quote and misattributed it. He has a degree in history so he knows how to check a quote for validity.

I think you're the only one in this thread (OP article included) to label him as such.

I guess you aren’t understanding the subtext in the OP.

Do tell Hammster. Are you mind reader?

From my perpective, a U.S. Senator, with a History degree from Standford, knows exactly what he is doing when he misattributes a quote to Patrick Henry.

Maybe you should ask the Senator what his intent was.

I am not confused.

The op thread makes a statement of fact.

Hawley was actually quoting a report from a white nationalist publication that ran in 1956 — more than a century and a half after the founding father’s death."
Okay. So you have the evidence that he actually got the quote from that publication, and not somewhere else. My mistake. I’ll just take a mea culpa and wait for that evidence.
