  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm just trying to understand. Not a judgement on any of you. Why would you want to be in a Christian forum? It would be nice if you're on the fence and you might fall over to our side. Hopefully to learn about Jesus. I've talked to a few and they made no bones about their hatred, one was converting people to his side. What about you?

A number of reasons

I like being exposed to opposing viewpoints. I'm a former Catholic and have small 'l' liberal views, as do most of my immediately family, friends and colleagues. In my day to day life, I don't get to interact with anything remotely like some of the viewpoints expressed here.
I like debating, and it's less fun debating people who you largely agree with.
The wrongness of some of the sets of claims here gets me researching in my spare time (everything from economics to paleontology, ontology and climatology) and checking my own assumptions, so I learn a lot on my own.
I learn a lot from some of the other posters her. There are lots of specalists in lots of fields where I have no education or experience.
Sometimes, I come on here to blow off a little steam and be snarky

Some atheists I know were former Christians. And virtually all of them talk more about Christianity than most Christians. So there's a really obvious preoccupation involved. The ones who have had my ear, like my sibling, whether intentionally or not, are trying to get me to see the error of being a Christian like they have.

There are some atheists, agnostics, whatever here who trash Christians and Christianity pretty vitrolically.

This is a question I (we) get asked regularly.

I've never been a Christian and, although I've come across the odd Christian, openly Christian people aren't that common in Australia. I'd always seen Christians as relatively harmless until the Creation/Evolution Wars began to warm up (in the US) a few decades back. I can recall reading Dover vs Kitzmiller transcripts back in the early 2000s and being shocked by the level of ignorance on the Creationist side along with the demands that an obvious scientific untruth should be taught in schools. At that time, I saw Christianity as a dangerous enemy of truth but basically run by good, if uninformed, people.

After joining a couple of desultory Christian based Australian Forums I joined CF in 2012 - to get a better understanding of Christianity. I still don't understand Christianity, but I've come to realise that what I need is a better understanding of Christians and why they believe what they believe.

You're entitled to your opinion, however contrary it may be.

As an atheist my response would be:

What does this mean?

To a non-Christian materialist like me, Christian jargon/truisms have no meaning. If you are going to respond, at least do me the courtesy of making sensible statements which have meaning outside of your Christian bubble.

What I find amusing is those who get bent out of shape over christians expressing christian morals and standards and quoting from the bible in a place called christian forums.

The key part of my statement was " if you are going to respond (to me)".

Christians are free to use Christian jargon expressing Christian morals on a Christian Forum. In this case the reply was specifically directed to me - a non-Christian and was phrased in cryptic Christianese. This is something I see regularly on CF where Christians, replying to non-Christians, drop vague Christian truisms. Apart from not providing a sensible response, these sayings act as shield protecting Christians from providing sensible, justified answers.

I wasn't replying to you, I was speaking in general. What I said is what I've said in the past.

In eleven years on CF I have yet to see anyone come close to proving Creation.

Evolution is not an atheist plot. It was identified by Christians (Darwin and Wallace) and is accepted as science by many Christians and Christian denominations.
