  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That idea goes back to the false theory that we don't have a 'soul'. Thank God that He did not leave Genesis 2:7 to be the final authority about how He created us in 3 parts, a soul, a spirit, and a flesh body.

In Matthew 10:28, Lord Jesus said to not fear those who can kill our body (flesh), but NOT our soul. So whoosh... goes that false 'we don't have a soul' tradition of the Jews right out the window!

And the idea that our soul means just an outward manifestation of one living with a flesh body upon this earth totally scraps all Bible Scripture about our spirit that continues to have life even after our flesh dies! And there's a whole lot of Bible Scripture about that! No wonder Jewish tradition believes in the false doctrine of 'soul sleep', because they believe the soul DIES with the flesh!

Genesis 2:7

7Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being (a living "soul").

To believe there is "something" within us that never dies is to believe we are immortal. There is nothing immortal about us .... the tree of live that was in the garden was removed ... without eating from the tree of life we die.

The tree of life will exist in heaven forever. It is there so that every Christian can eat its fruit.

Revelation 22:1-3

1 Timothy 6:16

Berean Study Bible
He (God) alone is immortal and dwells in unapproachable light. No one has ever seen Him, nor can anyone see Him. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen.

you got that wrong. SDA always think that because people say there is a soul, it is AUTOMATICLY immortal. That is sloppy interpretation. Scripture is very clear there is a soul and that it is immortal only if you accept Christ as Savior

1 Thessalonians 5:23 - And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 10:28, “Do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

Yes, to add on to this:

1Ti 6:13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession,
1Ti 6:14 to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
1Ti 6:15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
1Ti 6:16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

God is the only one who has immortality of His nature. Others have derived immortality from Him.

James indicates the soul can be subject to death:

Jas 5:20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

You’re conflating two different things. No one will be immortal until Jesus comes and give those saved eternal life.

Until than on this earth when one dies, they go back to where they came from back to dust and the spirit returns to God.

How we were formed:
“The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7).

What happens when we will die:
“Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:7).

“The body without the spirit is dead” (James 2:26).

Only Jesus can offer eternal life and it only happens after His second coming

“The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout. … And the dead in Christ will rise. … And thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17).

The reality of immortality does not happen until Jesus returns ... we do not become immortal until that time.

1 Corinthians 15

in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”…

We are mortal ... a soul is a person ... it's what we are ... not something we possess.

try reading the rest of your bible. like these texts.

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:14, ESV: For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
Why is God bringing with him those that are fallen asleep? There are not supposed to be in heaven?

notice you edited the context.

Question: How did they get with God in heaven?

That does not fit SDA view of death, but it does fit the Soul Sleep view.

And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

Seems pretty clear to me, those who are saved that are "asleep" in Jesus (the saved dead) will rise first to meet Jesus in the air. Those who are saved and alive at the time of the Second Coming with meet Jesus in the air after the dead rise first. Seems straightforward

I am not the one who believes this. SDA founder Ellen White believed it, and the SDA church still believes it today. I can find no support for this notion.
Then your not looking hard enough. Try reading the scriptures in the bible. If you cannot find them I am happy to share them with you if your interested. Also, for your information, EGW was only one of many other Christians that started the SDA Church which began in 1863.

ok show us from the scripture.
The SDA church was offically Named and due to the Civil war in 1863, before that between 1844 - 1863 it was called the Sabbatarian Advent Movement. They believed from 1844-1852 they had a special message for the Millerite Churches. When that failed it took them a decade & a war to figure out that Jesus was not coming right away, so they were forced to organize. so it is kind of Deceptive to say the church began in 1863.

you are not paying attention to the details. look @ verse 14, what does "God will bring with him" specifically BRING. you never address those parts, you just ignore them. That is problem with your view. you don't deal with with ALL the texts.

In 1844 Ellen White was 17 years old and a Methodist. The Millerite movement started from a baptist minister WIlliam Miller, not the Seventh day Adventist church as it wasn't formed yet in 1844. Ellen and a group of other studied with William Miller but it wasn't until nearly 20 years later the SDA church formed in 1863 after careful study of the scriptures.

That does not fit SDA view of death, but it does fit the Soul Sleep view.

He will bring with Him TO heaven those who have fallen asleep. Those in the first resurrection from the grave will be brought with Jesus TO heaven.

Indeed context is important .... so here is the complete context.

1 Thessalonians 4 13-18

The Return of the Lord

13Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.15By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.

16For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. 17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them (those resurrected from the grave) in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

NO, to heaven is not in the text. that is you making things up. you are trying to make the text say something it does not say.

that is the exact opposite of what the texts says. Context he is coming from heaven, bringing with him the souls of those that have fallen asleep. to reunite them with there body.
