My only real objection to biblical literalism is the "You're not a real Christian unless you agree with my interpretation of Genesis" rants it leads some of our creationist colleagues to indulge in. For my part, I wouldn't like to have to answer to God for a belief like that.
I steer clear of saying others aren't Christians, especially if they claim to be.

It only breeds contempt.

After all, in the academic world, Hitler was a Christian simply because he wore Gott Mit Uns on his belt buckle; yet they fight tooth-and-nail that Darwin didn't make a deathbed confession, because his children, from his first cousin, claimed he didn't.

Go figure.

Speak for yourself. I have a voice box, an appendix, get regular haircuts, and have human feet, not hands, at the end of my ankles.
We also have a soul and spirit.

Because i don't believe it is true.

It's an accusation, I'm willing to be shown to be wrong, but I've seen too may dishonest misrepresentations of Darwin, his work and his beliefs to take it on faith.

Again, I'm going to have to disagree.

And I think this can be tested:
  1. Put ten people with ten different backgrounds in ten rooms.
  2. Have them read and interpret Genesis 1: first literally, then over literally, then allegorically.
  3. Compare the interpretations.
I submit the overliteralists would be closest in agreement, followed by the literalists, followed by the allegoricalists.
It makes no difference who agrees with whom or how many, truth isn't established by numbers of believers; each group has their own, often conflicting, interpreted truth. It's known as coherence truth, because all it takes is coherence with some agreed framework of beliefs (e.g. interpretations). None of them need relate to the author's intended meaning.

No we are not. Stop spreading false information.
What's in a name? Being a primate is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of, any more than the fact that we are mammals. It simply means that we match all the definitive criteria for those groups. The fact that our closest genetic relatives are the great apes makes us great apes too. We have a common ancestor with chimpanzees - so I think we've done rather well in comparison.

Features that are not relevant to the definition of primate, which is a taxonomic order that includes our genus, Homo - of which our species, Homo sapiens, is a member:

Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Primates <-----
Suborder: Haplorhini
Infraorder: Simiiformes
Family: Hominidae
Subfamily: Homininae
Tribe: Hominini
Genus: Homo
Species: H. sapiens <-----

Do you have the same problem with being labelled a mammal and a vertebrate?

Accepting the terms and groups doesn't require you to accept evolution. Carl Linnaeus defined the classification of life many decades before Darwin was even born.

Speak for yourself. I have a voice box, an appendix, get regular haircuts, and have human feet, not hands, at the end of my ankles.

Chimps also have an appendix.

Not all humans get hair cuts.

Australopithecus had feet on the ends of their legs, not hands despite them being mostly accepted as apes.

It may be a falsehood, but in order to be a lie it must be an intentional falsehood. What is the intention?

So it is @FrumiousBandersnatch that you accuse of lying, then?

What evidence do you have that he was lying?

Do monkeys?
Nope, the equivalent structure is formed differently in most monkeys.

The humans have the same set up as the great apes.
Quote above 'The fact that our closest genetic relatives are the great apes makes us great apes too. We have a common ancestor with chimpanzees'
This is a lie
Not in the least.

Facts:
- We have the physical and biological traits that define us as a great apes.
- The pattern of genetics is most similar to great apes, in particular chimps.
- Genetics can be used to determine family relationships.

Given these facts it's a reasonable and sincere conclusion that humans have a common ancestor with chimpanzees.

You might assert that it's wrong, but calling it a lie is unreasonable.
