My father was like that after he got out of the coma... his face was messed up too... but thankfully it readjusted. His mental capabilities have fully come back as well.
My father's disease is deadly but with modern treatment... he might still have an average life expectancy. The biggest hurdle I think is being diagnosed. Before he almost died most doctors didn't have a clue what was wrong with him. Now that they know, they know how to alleviate his symptoms. It's been two years since he almost died... and hes's been stable since.
Although I do fear that he could quickly deteriorate at any moment like he did before, but I just kind of live in the moment now.
