  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Dude, I don't speak for the left, and neither do the members here. We don't have some sort of hive mind, but the fact that not a single other rep sponsored this bill, even the most radical members of the house, tell you all you need to know about how popular it is. The House passed plenty of bills they knew wouldn't get pass the Senate. That's how you show approval of the ideas in a bill.

It's funny that you don't speak for the left and the left isn't some sort of hive mind. Yet we conservatives are accused if that all the time. And so are Trump supporters.

We conservatives KNOW you are not a hive mind. But the left all share certain values and goals. Just like conservatives do. And one of those goals is some serious gun control. And the fact that none of you are willing to step up and say what you support and don't support in the bill speaks volumes. You all just don't want to admit that you like the bill and the things in it. Even though you know it wouldn't pass muster.

The Democrats know the bill is too radical right now for the public to accept.

Democrats' public gun registry bill blasted as 'frightening,' ‘anti-police’

Democrats' public gun registry bill blasted as 'frightening,' ‘anti-police’

This is also an interesting read:

By the end of March, Hitler had succeeded in passing the “Enabling Law” which gave him the ability to create laws as he wished, with no requirement for consultation. Following this, the confiscation of weapons escalated. Municipal governments were informed that military weapons and ammunition had to be surrendered by the end of March. The Jews were targeted next, with a large raid in East Berlin on April 4, 1933. Jews were not forbidden to own firearms until 1938, but the raid led to confiscations and arrests. The 1928 Firearms Law was utilized to identify the so-called enemies of the state, locate them, interview them, and subsequently confiscate their weapons, thereby increasing Nazi control and eliminating private ownership of firearms from the majority of society.
Also:

Stephen P. Halbrook, an attorney and Research Fellow with the Independent Institute in California, has written a remarkably well-documented analysis of how Adolf Hitler and his Nazi henchmen in the government made private, “unauthorized” gun ownership a capital crime, while using registration records to effectively turn ordinary Germans into instant criminals.

Halbrook’s book took 15 years to research and write, and he relied on German archivists and translators to assist him in plowing through original records and files from 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s Germany. The result is Gun Control in the Third Reich, a fascinating, readable, informative and important book.

Gun control is about hitting what you are aiming at.

It is also about keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. That seems a worthwhile goal we should believe in on both sides of the aisle.

How childish.

Tell that to the Marines.

agreed. We need to start by strictly enforcing the current laws. NYS used to have mandatory sentencing for possession of a hand gun without a permit.

I am 100% in favor of mandatory sentences for gun offenses including possession by a felon.

Why should I tell them about your childishness? They can just read your posts.

you will note I had not addressed the poster until now. Care to stay to the topic instead of throwing attempted insults?

I hear this a lot and I think it is a flawed argument. If the current laws are sufficient why are they not being enforced? Generally speaking law enforcement uses the tools it has to try to enforce a proper outcome. So why are these laws not being enforced and how will enforcing them resolve the issue? It seems likely to me that the reason the current laws are not enforced is they are not working as intended but we would need to talk to those charged with their implementation to find out.

How would we know how effective they are until they are fully enforced?

How do we know new laws will be enforced when the current ones are not?

Again I ask why they are not fully enforced? Do we have any ideas what is blocking this currently? Do we have data on what laws are being enforced and which are not? What data do you have showing the lack of enforcement?

I suggest we talk to law enforcement whom are charged with overseeing these laws to get their input. I further suggest we lift the moratorium on studying fun deaths so that we can start collecting meaningful data.
