In a similar way, face masks are tied to the political conflict over our response to the coronavirus. Those who lean left politically tend to see the virus as a more dire threat; those on the right are more likely to downplay its seriousness or compare it to less deadly strains like the flu, often following the lead of conservative politicians.

Accordingly, masks may be seen as a marker of political loyalty, triggering feelings of us-versus-them. A politically liberal person may assume that someone wearing a mask is “on their team,” while those who don’t wear masks must be Fox News-watching Republicans. The anger they feel is not simply about the mask, but about believing the non-mask wearer is a certain type of person.

On the flip side, the politically conservative might interpret calls for masks as politically-driven efforts to play up the seriousness of the coronavirus. Being asked to don a mask then becomes not just a request to protect the health of others, but to give up their worldview and political allegiance. It may feel like asking a Red Sox fan to put on a Yankees jersey.

It seems to be symbolic of doing whatever the government tells you to do, and people have a bad reaction to that. I think it's good to have that bad reaction, but I also believe that wearing masks might be helpful, and I'm pro-life, so I do it. I could be an asymptomatic spreader, and I would like to minimize any such impact.

I seen how serious China handled it. And knew we should take it very serious. The United States had plenty of time to get ready. Sadly our leaders weren't paying attention. Some Conservatives are using gloves mask, social distancing . And trying to protect themselves and other people. Sadly some are not. We have horrible leadership.

Comparing the US to other countries has to also take into account things like this:
Obesity Linked to Severe Coronavirus Disease, Especially for Younger Patients

Bill Maher actually did a great bit on it...but had to drop his usual f-bombs so I can't link it here.

Obesity (at any age group) drastically increases mortality risk from covid, at any age range...

That factor has to be considered. Nation's with even more lax restrictions (but lower obesity rates) don't have the same death rates that we do.

This an article I thought was poignant. Don't shoot the messenger please :).

People think their constitutional rights are being infringed on ... by being forced to wear a mask ... and I would agree .... HOWEVER ... It's a health issue ... some say masks help ... others say no ..... ok ... well ... since we really don't know whether masks protect or not for sure ... I think wearing the masks and the 6 ft distancing isn't a big deal .... better to err of the side of caution.

It's a conundrum.

I don't have a problem with the precautions and don't need a law for good common sense precautions. People don't use good common sense about a lot of things and we put up with it ... can't do anything about it.

Politicians???? They are using it to pit one against another like they always do.

That would be very foolish.

Yet that is what is happening because liberals hate anything conservative say and do even if it is beneficial and I do mean anything and so conservatives were put in a position where they have to respond in kind. So now anything Fauci and company say the liberals glam onto and conversely conservatives hate it. If liberals hadn't treated him and all science like gods and realized they are human and make mistakes than conservatives would not push back so hard. Like the mask debate many people and mostly liberals say well Fauci says to do it so it must be done yet he doesn't take it seriously himself shown by the fact that he was shown on video having fun with two people on video with his mask off and it wasn't just for a minute. The hypocrisy of the left is they will let him off without bringing him to task and the right makes to much a big deal out of everything.

The population doesn't know who to believe or what to do because away from the liberal/conservative nonsense and silliness there have been many lies. It would have been nice if the scientist just said we just don't know but no they had to have an ego trip because they been treated like gods and acted like they knew everything and made it political instantly when it hit our shores. Anyway my feelings and I am sick of both stupid sides

I wear a mask in public. However this is all about control. If they really cared about people. They would not of put covid infected people in nursing homes, jails, and prisons.

They intentionally infected the most valuable. The Gates Foundation mandate for covid response. Stop thinking was an accident. AARP is investigating nursing homes which make up 46% of covid deaths. This was intentionally done, and their loved ones couldn't even give them a funneral. Your being set up. DOJ has already been caught burning files which show they intentionally infected federal prisons look it up.

Given that America shares 5,250 miles of border with Canada and 8.7 times the population, the adjusted figures allow for direct comparisons!

It isn't as if Canada has more tools in her medical toolbox or more resources to combat COVID-19, so the difference must lie with leadership, co-ordination and the discipline to adhere to set guidelines - rather than taking shortcuts based on political considerations!

Yeah, we are fat and lazy for the most part. I went for a run in our local park and everyone that was just walking and stopping and walking were always looking down at there phones- and most were fat. I even asked another runner what was wrong? He said he didn't know, but then I realized it was just Saturday in the park, I'm usually there on weekdays.

Sadly we are reaping our lifestyle choices here. If you lose weight and raise your V02 Max through training, you are adding endurance and the ability to ventilate. Thus you can fight any sickness better and you will have better quality of life.
