Hello,

It's so unfortunate that many young people do not know or understand history. Yes, we all agree that slavery is wrong, bad and evil but since the beginning of civilization slavery existed everywhere. It was a way to profit from free labor. It was the mentality of the world up until a short while ago. I tend to believe that if the African nations were rich and powerful hundreds of years ago they would have done the same thing. That is, enslave Europeans. Why? The dark side of human nature: to conquer and get ahead of their competition. Look at venture capitalism. Big corporation making billions of dollars off the backs and misery of others. They jeopardize the safety of Americans by profiting from their scientifically unproven medicines, vaccines, 5G, and damaging the environment like fracking for instance. So you really have to understand where the root of the problems are that are causing income inequality, and present day racism in this country. Unity is needed. The classes should collectively join together to solve the inequality and tension caused by an elite class and their puppet politicians who are creating the problems and banking on the fact that the classes will not collectively unite to solve the real cause of the problems in America. So they continue to keep a broken system for their benefit.

I can't seem to find a link but I am not referring to the Transatlantic slave trade o am referring to the sum total of all slavery from the abolition of slavery in Mauritania all the way back to Greek antiquity. This was something covered in a sociology class I took in college.

It's possible. Slavery in the Muslim world had about the same magnitude as slavery in the US, and was majority-white. Slavery in ancient Greece and Rome was even greater in scope, and was overwhelmingly white.

Then again, there was also slavery within Asia, among native Americans, and internal to Africa. Numbers for those can only be guessed at. Adding everything up, your original claim might be true, but I would think it far from certain.

He's absolutely right. It was freedom for white people but not for black people. What Independence did they gain from the war? Zilch.

400 years ago white people brought black people over here and enslaved them. And sold them. And treated them as less than human. For 250 years. While white men formed the country and created its laws and its systems of government. While 10-15 generations of white families got to grow and flourish and make choices that could make their lives better.

And then 150 years ago white people "freed" black people from slavery. But then angry white people created laws that made it impossible for them to vote. Or to own land. Or to have the same rights as white people. And even erected monuments glorifying people who actively had fought to keep them enslaved. All while another 5, 10 generations of white families got to grow and accumulate wealth and gain land and get an education.

And then 60 years ago we made it "legal" for black people to vote, and to be "free" from discrimination. But angry white people still fought to keep schools segregated. And closed off neighborhoods to white people only. And made it harder for black people to get bank loans, or get quality education or health care, or to (gasp) marry a white person. All while another 2-3 generations of white families got to grow and pass their wealth down to their children and their children's children.

And then we entered an age where we had the technology to make PUBLIC the things that were already happening in private-- the beatings, the stop and frisk laws, the unequal distribution of justice, the police brutality (police began in America as slave patrols designed to catch runaway slaves). And only now, after 400+ years and 20+ generations of a white head start, are we STARTING to truly have a dialog about what it means to be black.

White privilege doesn't mean you haven't suffered or fought or worked hard. It doesn't mean white people are responsible for the sins of their ancestors. It doesn’t mean you can’t be proud of who you are.

It DOES mean that we need to acknowledge that the system our ancestors created is built FOR white people.

It DOES mean that we aren't disadvantaged because of the color of our skin and it DOES mean that we owe it to our neighbors-- of all colors-- to acknowledge that and work to make our world more equitable.

Instead of blacks hanging around listening to people like you who like to find excuses why blacks supposedly can't get ahead such as the claim it's the white man's fault? Blacks need to find successful people, yes especially successful black people to associate with...black doctors, lawyers, business men and women, black millionaires...find out what their secrets are! Get away from those who specialize in victim-hood! Like the Bible says "faith comes by hearing" if you hear 24/7 you're a victim then that will be your mind set!

You don't have to go around begging someone to listen, for someone to open up the door, you don't have to worry about level playing fields if you own the house the door's on, if you own the playing field!

Jews are the most hated and persecuted people on earth, don't forget the KKK hated them too...black people even talk bad about them but Jews don't complain about being disadvantaged! Instead when Jews go into a country they know they're going to be persecuted so what do they do? Behind the scene they become very wealthy and influential! They send the children to elite schools! They dominate in many areas!

People are becoming millionaires on the internet and nobody has to know what color anyone is! Blacks need to look at, take advantage of their own abilities and stop making excuses!

I wasn't aware that things said or written in the past are somehow irrelevant to the present.

What Douglas' statement demonstrates is that criticism against injustice against black people has been going on a long time, and the history keeps repeating itself in circles. Every time people of color speak up to say something about their mistreatment, the response is to tell them to shut up and sit down.

That's what people said to people like Frederick Douglas, it's what people said to people like Martin Luther King, it's what people are saying now to people like Colin Kaepernick.

The refrain is the same, "Shut up and dribble."

Because every time this conversation happens, the people in power want to silence it.
