Anyone notice that being a geek/nerd nowadays seems mainstream and normalized?

Because i remember when growing up in the 80s and early 90's when reading a book with a dragon or wizard on the cover or showing interest in anything like a computer was tatamount to showing up in "i love mommy underwear"

I have noticed too at cosplay and comic cons many people going to them, who in ages past like 20 or 30 years ago didn't want anything to do with nerds, i also have noticed fake nerds on instagram wearing fake glasses with hashtags like imsuchanerd. Years ago,i was picked on for wearing glasses due to being nearsighted.

I remember when it was nerdy (least where I lived) to surf on the internet for more than 5 minutes.. lol..

Can't say I have ever identified with being a nerd. I was good at throwing a football around and whatnot, but too small to ever really have a chance with sports.

Yeah things like comic books, video games and other stuff really took off. But i'm really kind of glad some of the medias i enjoy other people like as well. And going mainstream has really allowed some aspects of them to flourish, you see the tech that goes into video games? It's bonkers man.

During my childhood, telling your parents you want to play video games for a living was a sign that you were going to be a failure in life. These days, people have become millionaires by competing in eSports or live streaming themselves playing video games. I never would have thought that the highly paid athletes of our day would be a bunch of nerds who would have gotten picked last during gym class.
Streaming yourself isnt as easy as it seems, ive streamed before and its a lot to focus on your game and preform well while chatting with your audience. Ive always liked streamers.

I noticed a shift when Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon became big. I'm not a fan of either, but I do strongly believe that they did a lot of good - in fact, I'd go one better and say that they changed the world.

I'm glad too. It shouldn't be considered 'cool' to suppress intelligence or individuality, nor should popularity be the goal.

I hope it never goes back.

This is why everyone should try to deal with the stress of other people's intolerance and endure in patience. People can be very psychologically fickle, and our perception of reality usually changes based on what those we take as authority do and say.

If you wait a cultural generation (~20-40 years), the paradigm will change. It may even fluctuate within that generation. And, if you happen to come on the end of an age, you have the opportunity to allow "yourself" to influence or even create the new paradigm.

In 20-40 years, it will be commonplace for us to go to Academy and get a stellar education first. It will become a class issue later, where the educated are middle class, and the "nerds" are the new elite - even over military powers.

People are trying to blend in to what they may see will be the new thing... For now, many see Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, etc. as the nerds they bullied who now "own" them; they want that now.

I think it's reflected in the huge social and technological changes that have occurred over the last decade. For example, video games, movies, comic books, phones & apps.... the prominence of these have fallen into the territory of those who were previously deemed uncool 'nerds or geeks', who have rather become empowered through them in subculture.
When I was a child, I played video games. But not to the same extent as now. Computers & consoles were more rare and games limited. Now for example, nearly everyone has a computer, or console, or phone etc. where they can play games on, or "socialise". Social interaction through technological devices is a huge change. Back in the day, we would mostly only use phones to arrange a meeting and spend time face to face seeing people, unless it wasn't possible due to distance. Now majority of socialising has become data.
Although it is quite funny of a suggested internal struggle within the nerd/geek subculture of who is kvlt and poser :D

Although, this post has nothing to do with being single...lol...I'll shoe horn some relate-able stuff. Like...it's near impossible to find a woman over 40 that's into this kind of stuff. It's usually younger women. I mean, I'm sure there are some women over 40 that are into it...but they are few and far between. If they aren't into it, they at most will try to support your interest. :)
