When it is suggested that drunk drivers have their vehicles impounded during their revocation period the opposition clamor is heard to high heaven.

But when a repeat drunk driver kills someone...silence.

Jes' sayin'.

The world loves its own.

I have often thought that the world won't impose a punishment on others that it wouldn't want imposed on itself. Even to save itself.

Why ?

The world often destroyed others, and judged them, and imprisoned them,
just because it wanted to/ on a whim.

That's the stuff of revolution and war, which ultimately destroys them.

  1. In innocent spouse or family member would still need access to the car.
  2. Even without said family members, the person would still need the car if they could secure a willing & qualified driver. (You want them to get to their addiction counseling appointments, don't you...?)

There are several other ways to get places. The family would likely save money as well by using them.

True, and that should be considered but not drive policy.
But the co-owners of the car aren't guilty of anything. My wife co-owns our car, but cannot drive due to poor eyesight.

And the law doesn't take away one's right to own a car (in other capacities), just the privilege of driving one.

If their (own) business owns a fleet of cars available to their employees, do those get confiscated, too?

What if they are busted while driving someone else's car?

It's hardly worse on the family than a parent or spouse going to prison.

How is revocation enforced if the convicted driver has access to his or her vehicle?

If their (own) business owns a fleet of cars available to their employees, do those get confiscated, too?

Vehicles would be booted or impounded, not confiscated.

What if they are busted while driving someone else's car?

Their revocation is extended.

If a parent goes to prison, their children wouldn't have their bicycles impounded.

I'm talking about the first offense-in-question. What if the crime in the OP took place in a borrowed car?

I get the sense that you don't think that drunk driving is a very big problem. Based on the present laws you are in good company.

Limiting liability doesn't mean limiting the consequences.

And you side-stepped the question of "What if the offense in the OP took place in a borrowed car?"

That depends on if the owner knew the subject was a drunk driver under suspension. Borrowing another's vehicle to thwart the law is serious and must be addressed. Having a friend 'blow clean' into a breathalyzer ignition interlock is also a problem.

I think 10,000 deaths and many thousands more injured each year is cause for concern that our present laws aren't effective enough.

In the OP, the driver was not yet under suspension. I am talking about the initial offense, using a borrowed car.

The premise of the OP is if driving privileges are revoked, one's car should be impounded. What should be done if the first car was borrowed?

It's not my purpose to address every situation, just the most egregious ones. Present laws are wholly inadequate. It is ironic that the State can confiscate your vehicle if used in the violation of big game hunting laws but allows drunk drivers free use of them.

If you want to build a scenario, why did the subject borrow another's car in the first place? Did he crash his own while drunk?

That is what I am asking. Do we impound the loaned car?
