  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Perhaps the strongest argument in the Bible for Eternal Security and unconditional salvation are John 6:37-40 in which Jesus says:

" All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day."

It's hard not to believe in Eternal security with verses like that and John 10:28-30. Those are two powerful verses for the doctrine of Eternal Security.

Thanks man for bringing those passages to mind. I agree with you that those verses seem to talk about eternal security. But we have tons of other scripture that says the opposite. I'm not fully sure how to understand what Jesus is saying in these passages, but I think it's wrong to interpret it as you can't lose salvation since scripture is clear in so many places that you can. But you got me something to think about, and that is great. We need to help each other to study with sincerity.

You say there are lots of Scriptures that say we can lose our salvation.
Yet, I have not been shown one verse that once put into context actually said God would disown a child.

Or "unborn" that child (which would be absurd). God has made full provision to deal with Christians who persist in sinning. But salvation -- being a supernatural work of God by His grace -- is always secure.

Busy night here.....will try to answer erroneous critics of OSAS later tonight.. Meanwhile, what do you think of this....” Love God and live as you please” or Martin Luther’s words of wisdom....... “Sin Boldly”. Am I alone in understanding the wisdom behind these two statements?

This is pure human reasoning.
You guys still haven't answered my question about what parent would disown there child because they were tired of there child not doing what they were told?

There is a good reason God calls is His children and not His employees or members of a squad.

If that were the case no one would go to the lake of fire because God loves everyone.

“Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.”

Forgive me for saying so friend but they both sound like sayings made by satan himself. You won’t find anything close to those statements in the Bible.

You say there are lots of Scriptures that say we can lose our salvation.
Yet, I have not been shown one verse that once put into context actually said God would disown a child.

You can start to explain how these verses aren't saying you can lose salvation.

It would be great if we couldn't lose our salvation... but the bible is full of verses that says otherwise. God bless you and let us all continue in faith to our dear loving Father and Son Jesus Christ, Amen!

"But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either." /Rom 11:17-21

There is not much I have to add to what Paul says here.

"if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin" /1 John 1:7

In other words, if we stop walking in the light we no longer have fellowship with Christ.

And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and sensible steward, whom his master will put in charge of his servants, to give them their rations at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master will be a long time in coming,’ and begins to beat the slaves, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk; 46 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers. /Luk 12:41-46

Jesus talks about believers that doesn't take Christ coming very seriously and think that it won't matter how they live their life. Those believers will have their place with unbelievers.

"You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved." /Matt 10:22

Jesus is clear, you have to endure to the end to be saved.

"Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain." / 1 Cor 5:1-2

Paul says that we have to hold fast to the word to be saved or else we have believed in vain.

"yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach-- if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister." / Col 1:22-23

If you continue in faith being steadfast, then you won't be moved away from the hope of the gospel, meaningly salvation.

I hear this too. This is why it's such a heretical doctrine.
I can't post here anymore tonight. It's late here.
But there are some interesting posts for tomorrow.
Antinomians are heretical. But so are those who believe salvation must be maintained by ones works of obedience and if not they can lose it. Both groups deny the gospel of Christ although they give lip service to it. Can’t believe this is even a debate. And debated so often with modern day self righteous Judaizers. It’s so obvious that those who believe salvation can be lost by something they never attained to begin with, DO NOT BELIEVE eternal life rest in Christ. The lack of repentance is so evident. But I will say that free will theology is the basis for this Christ denying doctrine.

Challenge accepted

I’m surprised you haven’t came across these before but here a just a few examples. Perhaps you thought these verses only pertained to unbelievers? If that is the case that is incorrect.

A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.

Luke 6:43-49

What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?

James 2:14

So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.

James 2:17

“You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?”
‭‭James‬ ‭2:19-20‬

I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.

John 15:1-6

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21

Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.

Matthew 3:10

For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.

1 Corinthians 4:20

Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.

Ephesians 5:3-6

But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left. “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’ “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’ “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.

Matthew 25:31-46

Jesus replied, “The Son of Man is the farmer who plants the good seed. The field is the world, and the good seed represents the people of the Kingdom. The weeds are the people who belong to the evil one. The enemy who planted the weeds among the wheat is the devil. The harvest is the end of the world, and the harvesters are the angels. “Just as the weeds are sorted out and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the world. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!

Matthew 13:37-43

A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them. If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward. I tell you the truth, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns. But what if the servant is evil and thinks, ‘My master won’t be back for a while,’ and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk? The master will return unannounced and unexpected, and he will cut the servant to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 24:45-51

Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. “And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea. “What sorrow awaits the world, because it tempts people to sin. Temptations are inevitable, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting. So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand or one foot than to be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

I will just deal with all the verses you showed in one post.
You should have started in verse 11, I speak to you Gentiles. He is not speaking to the Church of God.
Speaking to Gentiles, if they believe, they can be grafted into the church.
And then Paul closes with 29, The gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Once God has given the gift of salvation He promised He wouldn't take it back.

"if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin" /1 John 1:7

In other words, if we stop walking in the light we no longer have fellowship with Christ.
In this case you should have kept going till you read chapter 2.
These things right I unto you that ye sin not, and if any sin we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous.
John was trying to get the unbelievers to walk in the light as the believers did.

This doesn't even look like a person who was given salvation. He is still a slave, not a steward.
"You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved." /Matt 10:22

Jesus is clear, you have to endure to the end to be saved.
Endure persecution and be delivered from persecution. Nothing here about eternal life.

There is more than one aspect to salvation.
When you were born-again. Your spirit was made new, and sealed with the Holy Spirit.
Our souls however are a different matter. Our souls are being made like Christ through faith.
Hebrews 10:14 says we who are being sanctified have been perfected forever.

See what I said about 1 Corinthians 15:1-2

If you are actually seeking, then wow. You are gold. Because most people just in the insecure camp that I have experience totally disregard anything said or verses quoted.

Your posting seems very genuine. You are very refreshing.

Does God require us to obey the commandments - No. Not for salvation. The commandments that we are to obey is to believe in Jesus and love one another.

1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

Why don't we have to obey the commandments, for two reasons. One because Jesus full filled the law. If you have a loan and you have paid it all off, thus full filling your obligation I suggest don't make any more payments.

Mat 5:17 "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.

Also, the law was not really given as a set of requirements to be obeyed to earn salvation or standing with God. The purpose of the law was given until the Messiah Jesus would come.

Gal 3:19 So what was the law for? The law was given to show the wrong things people do. The law would continue until the special Descendant of Abraham came. This is the Descendant mentioned in the promise, which came directly from God. But the law was given through angels, and the angels used Moses as a mediator to give the law to the people.

The law was also given so that we could see that sin was indeed sinful and wrong.

Rom 5:20 The Law came, so that the full power of sin could be seen. Yet where sin was powerful, God's kindness was even more powerful.

Finally Jesus did away with the law by full filling it. Therefore I don't mean did away in the sense that He abolished it but by fulfilling the requirements of it, God had the right to do away with it and implement what he always intend on implementing - Grace.

Col 2:14 God wiped out the charges that were against us for disobeying the Law of Moses. He took them away and nailed them to the cross.

Joh 1:17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came to be through Jesus Christ.

As to the what gets many upset at eternal security which is the idea then we can just willingly live in sin and they want to argue that eternal security gives them the right to do so without consequences.

As far as salvation goes that is true but that does not mean that there is no consequences. If you know the story of Abraham and Lot, the bible calls Lot a righteous man.

2Pe 2:7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked.

How can that be. When you read the story its hard to see that. He willingly choose to live in sin city. He was willing to give his daughters to a mob to be raped, he later lived in incest with them and he was a drunkard. How it can be is because God said it is the shedding of Blood that washes sins away.

Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in its blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to take away your sin: for it is the blood which makes free from sin because of the life in it.

In the new covenant Jesus blood is for the washing away of our sins.

Eph 1:7 In whom we have salvation through his blood, the forgiveness of our sins, through the wealth of his grace,

But getting back to Abraham and Lot. Even though Lot was saved, he did not live a good life. In the end of his life he lived in a cave. By comparing Abraham's life and Lot's, you will see a distinct difference between those who would willing live in sin and those who would not.

Abraham was not without sin. Even to the extreme that he was willing to let another man have sex with his wife to save his life. So Abraham slipped up, but he did not live in that constant sin every day of his life.

If you have more questions feel free to ask.

Be Blessed

Excellent post..I would only add that Paul said the Law was given so that sin would increase.....God wants us to get absolutely sick of it in the hope of crying out for deliverance.
Ultimately, the Law was given to show that we could not keep it.....we need a Savior. If we ask Jesus to save us He will put His Spirit in us and we will “ find” ourselves living A life that pleases Him.Faith plus nothing.

Along with the believing, is there Any performance necessary?

Does God require us to obey the commandments?

Also, if you don't use scripture, how am I to know it's not just your opinion?

A performance Is absolutely required for Salvation...HIS not ours....ours is like filthy rags
God gave us the commandments to show us we can’t keep them.....they show the need for a Savior. If there were a way to keep them, Jesus died in vain

A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit.
You should have paid attention to this verse. Jesus didn't say someone can stop being a good tree.
Good trees bear good fruit, bad trees don't bear good fruit.
What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?
Just saying you have faith, doesn't actually mean you have faith.
So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.
Faith produces. Ok, how does this verse say you can lose salvation?

“You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?”
Just saying you have faith, doesn't actually mean you have faith.
Who gathers the branches and burns them? Not God.
John 15:6 KJV If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
And you think the kingdom of God is just referring to eternal life? Not what Paul says in the following verses referring to the fruit of the Spirit.
The Kingdom of God is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.
If you are doing the things listed in verses 19-21 you won't be displaying what is in 22-23
Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.
A bad tree doesn't bear good fruit. How is this verse saying you can lose salvation?
For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.
How is this verse saying you can lose salvation?

Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.
God promised His people He would not be angry with them ever.
Isaiah 54:9 For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee.
Notice those who the blessed are and who the cursed are.
The blessed don't do good works to become blessed, but they do them because they are blessed.
The cursed don't do good works because they are cursed. Not to be cursed.
]How is this verse saying you can lose salvation?
A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them. If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward. I tell you the truth, the master will put that servant in charge of all he owns. But what if the servant is evil and thinks, ‘My master won’t be back for a while,’ and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk? The master will return unannounced and unexpected, and he will cut the servant to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Already dealt with in post 150

Actually the most important commandment is to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind and a second commandment which is equally important is to love each other as Jesus loves us.

How are you doing with those? We can’t even keep the commandments that God cares about most. The word “GRACE” never pops out of the mouths of those modern-day Judaizers. The very thing that saves us.You legalists can go ahead and trust the works you have deluded yourself into thinking that you keep——I’ll go with Paul’s Gospel, the One He said would SAVE us if we only believe it and don’t add to it.Faith plus nothing. As old as Abraham. “ the righteous shall LIVE by faith”

I will just deal with all the verses you showed in one post.

In this case you should have kept going till you read chapter 2.
These things right I unto you that ye sin not, and if any sin we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous.
John was trying to get the unbelievers to walk in the light as the believers did.

This doesn't even look like a person who was given salvation. He is still a slave, not a steward.

Endure persecution and be delivered from persecution. Nothing here about eternal life.

There is more than one aspect to salvation.
When you were born-again. Your spirit was made new, and sealed with the Holy Spirit.
Our souls however are a different matter. Our souls are being made like Christ through faith.
Hebrews 10:14 says we who are being sanctified have been perfected forever.

See what I said about 1 Corinthians 15:1-2

The steward (believer) is a servant of the master (God). It’s 11:21pm I will address these tomorrow morning.

Ok I’ll keep trying and failing and still trust in Jesus Christ as my savior and if your right and I’m wrong I’ll still be saved. But if I’m right and your wrong not only are you misleading others but you yourself will burn in the lake of fire if you don’t have a devotion to obeying and following Jesus’ teachings. Do you really think all those verses are for nonbelievers? There’s no point in mentioning those verses if it’s not for believers. If someone doesn’t believe they can refrain from sin all they want and do good works all their life and they still won’t be saved. If believers don’t have to obey those verses then there’s no reason to even mention them if we only need to believe to be saved. So you tell me why did Jesus say those things if we only need to believe? Sure no one will ever be perfect but that doesn’t mean that a certain level of devotion to following Jesus’ teachings is not necessary. The thing is if you are a believer and you have faith you will be compelled by the Holy Spirit to live according to His teachings. That’s what saves a person. Not the works itself but being born again and living according to the Holy Spirits guidance. The word faith is translated from the Greek word pistis which also means faithfulness and fidelity.

Ok here’s another example

““But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:31-46‬

Those who followed Jesus’ teachings are the righteous ones. The ones who did good works.

These verses refer to the treatment of the 144000 in the Tribułation Period. Believers will not be here to be tested in these matters.

Yes because believers don’t need to do good works or refrain from sin. That has nothing to do with being born again.

You said you will take Jesus at His word and then spoke about Paul.
Please post a scripture where Jesus said all you have to do is believe in Him and you will be saved. I can't find one.

Ditto for Paul. Paul did not disagree with the Master and Lord Jesus.

John3:16 would be one of those scriptures

If Paul said it, it came from Jesus...Peter said everything Paul wrote was scriptural. In fact, the Bible says we are to follow Paul as he follows Jesus.
