  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Most of the whole debate of weed is wrong came from the fact that it was illegal in most of this country for the longest, so when people in church would say they use it, they would get the trashing and hear they doing illegal activities and that is wrong.

Now that some states have it legal to use, is it wrong for a Christian to smoke weed. Ive come across youtube videos and see people on their social media pages that brag about doing it and brag about their faith too in other posts, but its technically legal in their state, so no different than smoking a cigarette in their eyes im guessing. I dont smoke anything or ever plan to, but im sure I will be accused of judging if I told another believer not to.

So is it wrong for Christians to use marijuana if they live in a legal state or should they not be using it at all (recreational use wise)?

Remember that pot may be legal in your state, but it's still illegal in the entire U.S. by federal law...

in case anyone is considering Paul's advice to obey the government authorities.

Ephesians 5:18 mentions wine, not pot, but the same advice holds:

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit.

Scripture does not speak of it directly and it does have a medicinal good use , it matters not what people say about it either pro or con ; consider that scripture does acknowledge that it is acceptable to drink wine - but not to the point where you become intoxicated , when you drink to get intoxicated then it is not acceptable , If you use marijuana some things to consider
Smoking it or anything -inhaling the smoke is harmful to the body - Would God find it acceptable
If you truly have a valid medicinal use for it - God will know about it
If you use it simply for recreational use - Do you think God will find it acceptable ?
It comes down to even if it is legal by mans laws , God will know why you are using it
If using in a manner that is unacceptable in Gods eyes you will be held accountable for it
It does not matter what people say as they say a lot of negative stuff and they will not be judging you on judgment day the Lord Jesus will - it will come down to why you are using it and if God finds that usage acceptable in His eyes

To me it is plain crazy to do anything that would alter the intellectual functioning of my brain, and that includes smoking marijuana or drinking alcohol. However, I would accept REAL medical reasons for either, in theory (thankfully, no need to do so in practice.) And I go ahead and use caffeine as a stimulant to keep me alert during the day as needed.

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

To me the question is, does it take power over you?
God gave us all things to enjoy. But, when things start taking control in our life, they need to go.

Here is something from the Book of Genesis.(King James Version)
Genesis 1:29 - And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
No.I do not. Nor have I ever had, smoked marijuana.

Well depending on the denomination some would say that's fine, even embracing gay priests or cardinals. Scripture does say there will come a time where they do not endure sound doctrine. I think we are there ! We live in a time where passages are missing if you pick the right bible to fit your need, people don't like it, they write a new one. Gee this gay woman is so smart , we will change the doctrine so she can fit in as cardinal. Why not pot, heck we can all sit in church and have a love in on weed and it won't matter if you are with a guy or a woman. What a concept, what a question, is there anything off limits anymore ?

There was a time when even the world looked down on recreational drugs.

And one might argue "But the Bible doesn't really mention it". When I think that, it always seemed so odd to me, something the whole world used to deplore not even mentioned in the Bible, or is it?

Then I often thought why is the act of Sorcery mentioned so many times in the NT as one of the sins that will get us a ticket to Hell? I mean who does that anymore?

Though I won't go deep into it...actually its pretty simple but I'll let you start here if you choose to do some research based on the fact Sorcery in Greek means Pharmakeia, and
Pharmakeia means Pharmacy/drugs/, hence drugs are mentioned in the bible quit a lot.

Sorcery pharmakia - Google Search

Homosexuality is legal, meaning, legal or not means nothing as far drugs being OK with God (recreational drugs). So unless you want to remain under a delusion Pot is ok, I strongly suggest you spend even 15 minutes looking into the link/sorcery.

G5331
φαρμακεία
pharmakeia
far-mak-i'-ah
From G5332; medication (“pharmacy”), that is, (by extension) magic (literal or figurative): - sorcery, witchcraft.

Another Greek word translated sorcery is in Act 8.
Act 8:9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
G3096
mag-yoo'-o
From G3097; to practice magic: - use sorcery.

I think the use of pot is much closer to using alcohol and getting drunk.

There's nothing in the bible that I know of that'd be against it.
I guess technically you are correct, but if peoples main intention is to get high when they smoke, could it be seen as kinda like sorcery?

Why? It's a drug, and a pretty potent one at that.

You mentioned witchcraft, can you see it? A potion? A potion that makes all our troubles go away, but unlike alcohol, something specifically allowed by God, it's not self regulating, as in no hangover.

"Hey, let's all go down to the neighborhood Sorcerer/Witch (Drug dealer) and get one of those feel good potions that you add fire to and inhale." We would never do that because we know how God feels about it, or would we?

God gave us the mind he wanted us to have to face this test we have to go through in order to make it to heaven, and I seriously doubt he wants us to kick back, do things to that mind to make it all easier. As in, for instance, love everyone because we're high. If that's what it takes, we aren't really loving our neighbor at all, the drug is making that possible.

I don't believe the Lord wants us high on drugs.

What's the difference between being high on pot and being high on alcohol?
