When the bible mentions sorcery, what words do they use and what do they mean?

One of the words used is "witchcraft". It is akin to "rebellion". The rebellion component is based on "pride". It all ties together, according to what is written in God's Word.

The verse that comes to mind is this one:

"For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry." ~I Samuel 15:23

After wizards (sorcery ) in hebrew = H3049 from root word H3045

H3049
a) a knower , one who has familiar spirit
b) a familiar spirit , soothsayer , necromancer

Not them that have samiliar spirits = H178
a) water skin bottle
b) necromancer
c)necromancer , one who evokes the dead
d) practice of necromancy

Drugs were used by necromancers to talk with dead spirits and demons , still can be seen in Africa within tribes .

Sorcery (n.) c. 1300, “witchcraft, magic, enchantment; act or instance of sorcery; supernatural state of affairs; seemingly magical works,” from Old French sorcerie, from sorcier, “sorcerer, wizard,” from Medieval Latin “sortiarius” teller of fortunes by lot; sorcerer,” literally “one who influences fate or fortune,” from Latin sors (genitive sortis) “lot, fate, fortune” (see sort (n.)).

there is another word in Scripture that brings to light the potions created by witches or sorcerers. This aspect of sorcery has great application to living our lives as Christians. It is seen in the Greek word, pharmakeia, (5) which is where we get the word, pharmaceuticals, or drugs. References to this word are found in the following verses:

And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts. (Revelation 9:20-21)

And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. (Revelation 18:23)

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. (Revelation 22:14-15)

Then there's Simon the sorcerer who wanted to "buy" the Holy Spirit from the apostles so he could be a better "sorcerer" and have the "Holy Spirit" do his bidding.

Well, a modern definition of "sorcery" is >

using supernatural power to effect and predict things which happen.

But we know how Jesus has influenced events and predicted things, but what Jesus does is not sorcery and what we do with Jesus is not sorcery > we pray and God does what He pleases; so we are not really controlling things, but our Father is the One who acts in answer to our prayer.

So, I understand that this definition of "sorcery" means how an individual without God and God's guidance is trying to control and predict things. The person is not depending on and obeying Jesus our Lord and Savior.

Another problem is how someone in sorcery can be seeking what he or she or some other person wants, not obviously seeking all which God desires, but trying to use supernatural means without Jesus.

So - - @W2L - - - it seems that words like "witchcraft" and "diviner" mean sorcery of some sort. And 1 Samuel 15:23 says "rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft". So, scripturally, any disobedience is witchcraft in the sight of God. While we disobey, we are depending on power which is not God and His love. We can be trying to know the future and control things, but mainly for our own selves.

We need, instead, to always be submitting to how God rules us in our hearts with His own peace > Colossians 3:15. And learn with Jesus (Matthew 11:28-30) how to love and relate in His love > Ephesians 4:2, Ephesians 4:31-5:2.

This means we need to deny ourselves and take up our cross with Jesus > Luke 9:23. But in sorcery, one is depending on less than God, and is trying to get what he or she wants for oneself, not first seeking to please and obey God.

The word sorcery in the Old Testament is from the Hebrew word “kashaph” which means “to practice” or “use witchcraft”

What I was reading about pharmakeia was that witches etc would use drugs in order to induce a trance or commune with spirits. As you can see n the Revelation verses it says the would will be using pharmakeia and I know at least the USA is currently doing so
