  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

First it was the Confederate statues, and now...

Christopher Columbus is the new target.

Columbus statue beheaded: Christopher Columbus Statue Beheaded in NY

Los Angeles bans Columbus Day and replaces it with Indigenous Peoples' Day: In Los Angeles, Columbus Day is toppled like a Confederate statue

Trump was definitely on to something when he said Jefferson and Washington statues would be targeted next. Thoughts?

My thoughts? It sounds like these people want a new country. I guess the American Flag will be next ... :eheh:

...they'll probably want one with stripes, and hammer and sickle.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. It won't be long until the left begins to brand the US flag as a symbol of racism and oppression, then call for its removal from public spaces.

Part of the problem though IS the far Right; they just exacerbate the frustrations of the extreme Left. I don't think either of these represent the healthy aspirations of a democratic nation or a fair republic.

What Christopher Columbus did was not on par with what Jefferson & Washington did to build our country. I see no problem with the "holiday" being renamed. And I'm not a liberal.

Had Columbus not discovered the Americas, another country like China would have done so. North and South America would probably be speaking Mandarin today if not for Columbus' discovery.

OK, let's turn every statue in the country into Rock 'Em Sock 'Em robots and may the best robot win. My money is on the Statue of Liberty.

President Trump is on to a lot of things because he has common sense. Apparently, it is the intellect that is most difficult to recognize.

Yes, they would desire a new country birthed by a new constitution.
How about imagining that one, a constitutional crisis. Imagine the anarchy.

I feel like the next president is gonna change the constitution, or at least challenge it.

Christopher Columbus never set foot in the United States of America. It's entirely ignorant to lump him with George Washington & Thomas Jefferson who actually built up this country.

South Dakota, which went for Trump, started calling Columbus Day Native American Day back in the 90s.

Now, tell us who the Americas are named for. Hint, he wasn't Chinese.

By definition, a liberal supports change, conservatives avoid change.
You might want the temperature in Hell to increase, you'd be a liberal.

The problem is the far *anything*. One reason the country is so messed up is because the extremes on both ends are getting more vocal and powerful. Reasonable discourse has been displaced by riots. Both extremes are to blame - because they're extreme.

It's not just about the Confederacy; it's part and parcel of an attack of any manifestation of Western Civilization. This is why Yankees ought to support the preservation of Confederate monuments. Their history is a stake too. The President seems to get this...

I homeschooled my daughter, and every year we ran through an overview of American History. Columbus Day falls conveniently early in the school year.

After a few years and having read several biographies, she announced one year that she no longer wished to devote any time to him, because of the things he had actually done and the kind of character he exhibited. And we read biographies meant to make him out a hero, at least to some degree, not shame him. She still recognized in the facts that he is not one of our better role models to celebrate.

However .... I am always opposed to civil disobedience, vandalism of monuments, and so much more we've been seeing lately. Truth is good, lawlessness is not. Let's please get all of our priorities in order. (I can hope, at least.)

Your daughter sounds like she's got a good heart & mind.

Robert E Lee was against Confederate monuments, on account of how he believed they just kept open the sores of war. I think he was right about that. His descendants & those of other major Confederates have been in support of the monuments coming down. Being removed, but not torn down or vandalized. I think they ought to be moved to museums. They're a part of our history & they are important to it, but they don't need to be celebrated.

I can certainly appreciate a sane and thinking approach to our history. :)

There are negative aspects, there are wounds that need healing, and acknowledging truth is always good, IMO.

I have another friend who advocated leaving the statues, but putting up plaques that gave a more balanced view of history. She too was opposed to vandalizing them.

I wish we could find some reasonable course of action.

But the images put out (not to mention the sheer lawlessness) of destroying and vandalizing monuments does nothing but stir up passions all around and incite more anger.

I could wish we would do the right things, for the right reasons. Acknowledge truth all around, good and bad, and behave in a lawful manner.
