I wouldn't. What you believe is ultimately your decision.

Let's say, for example, that I believe in evolution instead of creationism. What would you tell me? (That's just one example of many. Don't focus on it, please.)

I'd tell you that evolution is accepted science, and creationism is faith. I'd also tell you that I believe that God created the world and set the process of evolution in motion. I don't believe someone has to be "converted" from the "faith" of evolution.

Atheists are NOT close minded as some suggest, but rather they need rationale and evidence and waving the bible at them and expecting that to convert wont work. For me , i totally support scientific principles. But the effort to appeal to those principles works for me. Any discussion that that says YOU AND SCIENCE ARE WRONG and this book is right wont work imo. But when you talk, for example, about the emergence of a singularity and subsequence big bang theres space for god and a beginning of a conversation.

Pretend I'm an atheist. How would you convert me?

The title says it all.

I went to an atheist forum to preach about God and failed miserably. I don't know if they were closed-minded or I was just too much of an idiot to persuade someone of anything. Either way, I want to be someone who is good at debating on the side of my God.

So how would you approach such a situation? What would you tell me to convince me out of my atheism?

Let's say, for example, that I believe in evolution instead of creationism. What would you tell me? (That's just one example of many. Don't focus on it, please.)

1. The Holy Spirit would convert you. He "convicts the WORLD" of sin and righteousness and judgment John 16.
2. And even the Pagans of Romans 1 are confronted with the fact that the "the invisible attributes of God are clearly seen in the things that have been made" Romans 1.

So then in the same way we would convince a Buddhist about Christianity being the true religion.

The manager/founder of one "Atheist hotline" dedicated to helping Christians become atheists and supporting them as atheists once they do... said that the number one call they get on the hotline from atheists - no matter how many decades the caller has been atheist is: "a morbid fear of hell"

In the creation vs evolution discussion one might ask how conscience evolves...the theory of evolution says things evolve because of a need to survive. This leaves us with the issue of survival of the fittest vs conscience...the two are incongruous or incompatible and one must be wrong. Conscience says do not kill while survival of the fittest says the fittest kill and prey on the weak...the weaker grow extinct, etc.
Also the theory lacks integrity from a scientific stand. There are sophisticated, self-contained parts in animals and people alike they cannot and did not evolve. The flagellum of a from is an example. The theory is debunked by the highest level of scientists...including Stephen Hawking who now believes intelligence was brought to earth by aliens from another planet (how did those aliens get intelligence and a conscience remains a question for him then)/
It is not we, believers, who are naive, but they and seriously so. To think such a complex world with such complex beings and creatures owning miraculous bodies could just evolve is extremely naive.
They must not stifle their own conscience or they will be lost in the end.

And a note of thanks to you for your bravery as a good, no excellent, Christian soldier in all your efforts! God will bless your work. Conversions are seldom made overnight.

We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and (the word of our testimony). Do you have a testimony?
That verse isn't referring to that type of personal testimony...those that is a help to many...speaking of the spreading of the WORD. We give testimony of Jesus, of the Word of God. Faith comes from hearing the message and the message is the Word of God...Romans 10:17.

Yes I know it isnt referring to it in that way, thank you for pointing that out. I was just simply stating his testimony can speak for itself, concerning the power of God, and not only that, but when we share our testimony, it empowers us, because then we have put the devil on notice and proclaimed what God has done. So the giver and the receiver can benefit, from sharing our testimony. Thanks and God bless.

Give the word of God, no need to debate. The word is a two edge sword 1 Peter 3 says

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

No one comes to the Son unless they are drawn by the Father. It helps to change your mindset. It is not up to you or how smart you are to convince someone why to believe. Rather, you believe, study the word and know it well, the Holy Spirit will give you an answer and what to say, but it will be the word. Trust the Lord, share the gospel.

We can have an intellectual discussion on this until the cows come home.

But this is not an intellectual battle, my friend.

I can't provide a sufficient answer as to why my God is the one true God, outside of the bible.
But that isn't very convincing is it? If I were to write on a piece of paper saying I'm the President, hardly makes me the president eh?
If you keep your ears open, and your mind vigilant, you can hear him call.
That's what I can say on that.

As for Atheism, I can only tell you that 0 + 0 = 0 100% of the time.
I can only hope to persuade you into a healthy agnosticism or deism, and pray that God reveals himself to you.
That's what I'll say.

I've never been able to make others see my perspective. I suppose only those who would make good used car sales men can speak the word of God and make others see that perspective. But I agree with others on here that if someone has chosen a truly dark path, that there is no saving them. Because we all have free will, so its up to us as individuals to see the path of the light from whatever place we exist. Or maybe its not our path in life to change the person who we think needs change. Maybe they are to be changed by someone else and their time for change has not come yet. Either way, I have never changed others beyond positive mentoring in non faith related fields.

Luke 21:14-15

So make up your mind not to worry beforehand how to defend yourselves. 15 For I will give you speech and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

I made the same mistake you did, although there was some good fruit that bloomed after it was all over. God can use even our stupidity to save and rescue people. However, that isn't an excuse to do things the wrong way. Paul said "Should I sin that grace may abound? God forbid!"

Going into an atheist forum alone is asking for trouble. I would only do it if God specifically laid it on your heart to do so. If not, you are not going to be able to do much for Christ there. If your motives are wrong the Spirit will not bless what you are doing. The verses I posted tell us that when we are doing Gods work He will give us the right words that our opponents will not be able to contradict. That we shouldn't try to come up with something good; He will tell us what to say.

Someone else said it in this thread; we can't convert the soul, only the Holy Spirit can. That's why we need the unction from Him to move because otherwise we are in our flesh and we know that in our flesh dwells no good thing.

Haven't read comments yet as don't have time but will read them later. (I'll get notifications now I posted)

What I would do regardless is remember who I am in Christ and be extremely careful not to say anything that could harm the testimony of God's followers (thus lowering their opinion of the Lord Almighty)and behave with as much grace as I can. When insulted I would remember to not rise to reply with anger. Not mock when mocked. Repay evil with good.

Would need to remain meek, kind, humble and try to stay above reproach. 1 Peter 2

The only reason anyone will believe anything is if they find anything that PROVES it to them within their own experience. No amount of words can ever convince anybody in anything. It's a totally useless exercise. The only true method of effectively talking to somebody not believing in God, is actually LOVING them in action. In an online forum, that can be just trying talking to them as to fellow human beings, and showing the best side of humanity. If somebody's sad, try and uplift their spirit. If somebody's angry, try and be kind and forgiving. People need love. That's all they need. They don't need great arguments, even if you're able to provide such. No. Only love, true love from your heart to theirs is the only thing that is ever going to touch anybody's heart. Show that you care about THEM. Not about their beliefs or unbeliefs or convictions or knowledge or whatever. Show them that you care about who they are, what they are, and how they are and that you genuinely and sincerely wish them good. That's all that matters. Even if they vehemently disagree with you and condescendingly laugh at you, your true love will surely, surely re-kindle the little flame of faith in God that each person on the planet has. Some are just successful at suppressing it or pretending they've suppressed it. But no. It's there. We're wired that way. They may not admit that your love touched them deeply, but it definitely will. It's bound to.

I used to hand out little fliers about Christ to the public.

Here is my answer to your question: tell them to get a white blank piece of paper, a pencil or a pen, and then tell them to draw a circle. Then tell them that circle could not have gotten there without a creator and like that circle they drew, the universe and everything in space could not have gotten here without a creator.

I believe it's that simple. If they argue after that, they are simply in denial.

I would not try to convince you or debate you at all. Thats brain against brain. Either you demonstrate power, or be silent. This is what jesus meant when he said: "wait...until the holy spirit comes upon, then you shall become my witnesses." No one ever debated a unbeliever into beleiving. At the most, but still very unlikely, you can convince them with dazzeling arguments....but all that means is that your brain conquored their brain for a while, means nothing.

you are assuming that teh whole world is reasnable and able to find god trough logic. Thats not true, the world is deceived. It takes the conviction of the holy spirit to convert the world. This is what jesus say when he teaches that when the comforter comes he will convict the world. ITs a huge mistake to believe we can reason people into anything. IF they dont beleive after you draw them a cricle, its because the god of this world have blinded their eyes. So they are in denial? so? shall we just leaven them then? what can we do about it? Well we can not do anything. Thats when true holy spirit ministiry comes in...thats the helper that turns us into witnesses. This is why the spirit was given to us, to convict the world. This is what the bible says. forget logic and reasoning. Thats all tree of knowledge stuff, where daeth comes from. Dont get into it. This is a spiritual battle. We werent annotinted to draw circles. The existance of god is a self evident fact, just to point it out to ppl who already are blinded to this fact wont matter. But we are annointed to speak the gospel about the kingdom. If we dont do that under the power of god, then its better to be silent. We then need to get a real relationship with the lord that is not based upon logic and what we are told when we grew up. thats all powerless. can not convict anyone.

Pretend I'm an atheist. How would you convert me?

I don't convert anyone. All I can do is proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

So how would you approach such a situation?

The same as I would for any unbeliever.

Ask them if they consider themselves to be a good person.
Discuss with them the 10 commandments and see if they are in perfect obedience to them. When they demonstrate that they are not, ask them if God will find them guilty or innocent of breaking His perfect law. Ask them if God should let them into Heaven or send them to Hell. Since they have admitted that they are guilty in response to the 10 commandments, if they are honest, I will point that God is a just judge and He will do what is right, and hopefully they will see that they deserve God's wrath. Then I will point out how Jesus Christ came to earth as a man, to live a perfect life that we are utterly incapable of living, dying a death on the cross that we deserved and rising from the dead on the third day, proving that death has no power over Him. And that all who repent, turn from their sin, and trust in His righteous alone, and not their own righteousness, God will make them a new creation, where they no longer love their sin, but love God. He will cause them to be born again. And I would encourage them to read the Bible, study it and obey what it says.

What would you tell me to convince me out of my atheism?

There is nothing I can say that will convince anyone to turn from their unbelief, because salvation is the work of God, not me.
..
