Correction is in quote. I assume you mean something more nefarious. Am I correct? What do you mean?
Jesus asked forgiveness for those who were about to crucify him, but it didn't help them or him.
....by helping drug addicts, beside feeling good?
We now have an epidemic of dangerous heroin use with hundreds dying each month across the country, costing millions that we don't have. Shouldn't we, as a society, just let them reap the fruit of their bad decisions? Of course family and friends can spend their money, time, and emotions if they choose, but why should the nation go bankrupt trying save every lost soul?
Turning someone who is a drain on collective resources into a net contributor to collective resources.
Not opening society up to the corollary effects that come with substance addiction and abuse.
Curing people of their addictions is MORE BENEFICIAL to society at large than either ignoring the problem, or jailing drug users.
Even if you just look at it on a purely monetary basis, treatment is vastly more cost effective than incarceration or abandoning people to their own abusive behaviours.
A 2013 study estimated that treatment vs incarceration saved about $42,000 per person, per year.
The US CDC puts the net cost of failing to treat drug addicts at 125-200 billion per year, depending on the assumptions you use about numbers of users.
What would that look like?Shouldn't we, as a society, just let them reap the fruit of their bad decisions?
How so? Useing tobacco is extremely addictive and harmful.Apples and oranges.
That wont stop their addition. As soon as they get out. They start using again.Commit them to an institution until they are no longer addicted.
Why don't addicts seek help rather than committing crimes? It seems like a conscious decision to avoid being helped. This defines them as criminals with an addiction.
Because of a lack of resources.
Many become felons as a result of their convictions, which makes it nearly impossible to find a job to support yourself. People stupidly thought if you punish addicts more, it will keep them from being addicted. People don't fall into addiction in a sound state of mind.
I agree. This reminds me of the same line of thinking that has done people responding to depression by saying things like just pick yourself up or other people are doing worse or just will yourself to be happy ignore the fact that depression is the loss of the will to do these things. Quite frustrating.
None of these things actually address the problem people usually place their own discomfort onto others . I'm wondering why the original poster is so angry at people that are suffering.
Because he doesn't understand addiction, he thinks its a choice, and addicts choose to stay that way, in his own words...
"Why don't addicts seek help rather than committing crimes? It seems like a conscious decision to avoid being helped. This defines them as criminals with an addiction"
I do wonder why people are not able to see that such a response does not solve anything.
On a side note.. Thank you for reading between the lines of my posts.. I am often typing fast and not editing properly when I first post. When I return to my post I'm horrified at all of the grammatical errors.. :-/

I see.. That makes sense.. I do wonder why people are not able to see that such a response does not solve anything.
