I’m new to your forum, but returning out of curiosity. As a child I was raised SDA and sent to the Adventist schools, learned a lot about Ellen White and I honestly don’t have an opinion on her other than she does seem to have been the real deal, I tried holding a heavy family bible on an outstretched arm once, didn’t last long.

I did some flying for an Adventist a while back and really love the guy. What really hurts me today is that during my upbringing grace was never mentioned, only rules. Maybe that was my misunderstanding or maybe not. Where I failed I came away thinking Christianity was nothing but hypocrisy because I was being taught one thing in school and seeing another lived out in my family. Family meeting always ended in fights about religion. I was baptized in an Adventist Church when I was in grammar school without really understanding what Christianity was all about. Baptism was just something everybody did, or was suppose to do.

I walked away from Christianity totally until I was in my late twenties when someone explained to me what God’s grace really is and how we come buy our salvation. Today I’m in my 60’s and I love all believers, I think whatever denomination we associate our selves with means very little to God, but He sure cares about our heart on it’s condition.

I would love to see the Adventist associate more with other denominations, we are all different parts of the same body. I love what John Wesley said “Love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself and all the rest is just commentary”.

Do we get too fixated on the law,? What do we do with Philippians 6?

Hello to all the brethren here on CF !

I'm glad I found the site and it's good to see all the responses here from active members. I've attended the adventist church now since xmas 2004. Met my wife there too. Although she wasn't going at all at the time. She was raised in the church but she felt she had a sheltered life and wanted to explore the world some and ended up outside. I came along and became her friend and she ended up attending my baptism which turned out to be her first time back for years ! I was a Christian before this but received a lot more understanding through Adventism as you could imagine. Thanks to the Doug Batchelor net 99 series !! And a praying, Samoan family looking to lead even 1 soul to the truth. It happened to be me who was definitely seeking more of Jesus truth for my life. I knew there was more but I wasn't sure quite what it could be. Also not to forget, my wife has been baptised since too. We ended up studying the Bible together and that was an answer to prayer also, of her Auntie's. We weren't going out then, just friends.
So that's a little about us and I look forward to interacting here. I'll be on my way to work very shortly actually so will log off now. God Bless to all the family !!

Hi! Well, I'm not actually an Adventist, but my father is a member of the Seventh Day Baptists and I fellowship with them a lot... of all the denominations we probably have the most in common with the Adventists because of the Sabbath issue and we usually visit Adventist churches when we're travelling because there are more of them.

I'm non-denominational, but a Sabbath-keeper, and pleased to hang out on the Adventist part of this forum just as I hang out with Adventist friends in real life!

I figured I'd introduce myself here too, even though I kinda did in the TSDA subforum.

My name is Pete, and I live in Pennsylvania. I go to the Robbinsville SDA Church in New Jersey. I'm an assistant youth leader over at the church and I also run the sound system during the church as well(not as much as in the past though hehe).


My path to the Lord has been an interesting one. My parents became Adventists in '82. Besides having my sister, my parents wanted another child. But my mom's health wasn't very good. she had thyroid problems, had several operations on it, and through some complications the doctors told her that it will be physically impossible for her to have another child.

Well here's proof that our God hears and answers prayers because after 2 years of sincere prayer I was born. Now I've kind of promised Him that since he gave me life, I will give him my life in return. Being an Adventist my whole life I've learned so much about the Lord and all the truths we hold sacred.

Yet these past couple years have been absolutely crazy, so to speak. I guess Satan saw how close I was getting to the Lord and how much I wanted to give up for him so starting after my baptism in September of 06, he has tried his best to lead me astray and lead me down the wrong path. Not getting into too many details but he tried everything from drugs, girls, fame, you name it... he was pulling me into his realm. He almost succeeded too, and I have to admit I was really falling into the world. You could say I went through a very rough 'refining' process. And while I was at my lowest point ever God gave me strength to break free of the chains Satan had put on me.


Now the latter rain is almost here and I'm just getting ready to do the work that I know God has planned for me to do when he first brought me into this world. I can't wait!

Greetings, I just happened to see this post. I set my app up to shoot me onto the traditional side and recent replies. I've seen no activity this weekend and was thumbing around. I too have attended many Adventist churches and maybe it's just me, but I see little true joy in a lot of the folks , just a peculiar group of folks that seem to be looking down their nose. Maybe they are just better grounded in law than I. When I'm in one particular town, I always stop by and sit with one particular fellow named Chuck and he is a hoot. We laugh and have a ball, while being eyed, no doubt. Who knows why we are like we are. I love life and love what God has done for me. I can tell you this, when God fills you with the Holy Spirit, you don't live in fear of the world, but you respect it's ferocity, you love, you laugh, and you take EVERY word He has written as TRUTH. Even the smallest, most insignificant verse tells a complete life lesson full of wisdom. I came from a life that obviously had some generational curses because there was not one day that I didn't think about taking my own life- NOT ONE, until God led me to pick up the bible , I guess about 7 years ago, now that I think on it, and since the FIRST day, the thought has never entered my mind again. Why, who knows. I never asked for relief from it ,as I thought it was normal. It was all I ever knew, anyway. I lost interest in drinking alcohol. I guess that took a year or so. Just slowed to a halt. It's funny how once you lose the desire to destroy yourself, the many vices you have simply go away. GLORY BE TO GOD on that and all things. I had been to MANY Sunday churches, denominational and non. I've spent hours reading the Bible in my destructive days, but it never spoke to me. I had been blessed with many talents and did all things 110%. When the Lord leaned on me to pick up His Word, I sorta, in my arrogance, told Him I would with the same vigor I wrought to destroy myself with if He would cut through all the red tape and give me ALL TRUTH. By His Grace, here am I. He held up His end, plus some. I'm blessed beyond measure and have dedicated my life to His service. I'm fortunate to be able to spend MANY hours a week in the WORD. I'll take that over any amount of money. Very few people actually get to put or take off the world. So far I'm dry and I eat. Not much else matters as far as the human condition goes. I'll say this in closing- To ANY out there who doubt anything God says in His WORD, if you truly seek him humbly and repent of your sins, He will show you all things. He says to try him on for size. He will not disappoint you. He's very real and very concerned about His children. I started by simply keeping His commandments. He'll know if you are serious. All else just fell into place. Your life will never be the same, this part I CAN promise you. Peace be with you .

That seems to me to be a strange mix of doctrines. Adventism came from the Wesleyan Holiness camp and Baptist doctrine seems to be more Calvinist than that.

Which seems rather typical in all old-line Wesleyan Holiness congregations. It was all about what you COULD NOT do.

No sports. no movies. no television. no alcohol. no cards or dice. no music other than classic hymns and southern gospel. no dancing. And the list went on and on and on ....

I am saying that those are the roots Adventism (via Miller) came from. And back in the 1960s I heard a lot of Adventist preachers denouncing all of those things. (I grew up near Andrews Univ)

But even the most ardent Holiness denoms (like the Pentecostal Holiness and the Wesleyans) have backed off of those positions in recent decades. They started to realize they were focusing more on externals rather than heart attitudes.

I worked one summer in the kitchen of a Fundy Baptist youth camp near my home town. It was toward the end of the Jesus Movement and I was in highschool and had just learned to play guitar. So one evening after all the dishes were done from dinner, I was sitting on the pier with my 12 string and playing a joyous praise song from said Jesus movement; and was sternly rebuked by one of the camp counselors for playing happy music. I replied "The Joy of the Lord is our strength." That REEAALY did not sit well and he started yelling at me: "That is HIS joy, NOT ours! Have you never read that it is better to mourn than to rejoice?"

That was about 45 years ago and I have yet to find that verse reference.

I understand Adventism to be undergoing a seismic shift at present. (actually going on for the last 30 years or so) I may have started at Andrews Univ - or at least Andrews got on board early on. I remember back in the late 80s and early 90s hearing John Carter (SDA Evangelist) on the Univ radio station and I REALLY enjoyed him. Found out later he is at least marginally charismatic. And his doctrine was definitely moving AWAY from all the externals.

So I have surmised that the same trend that is happening in the Wesleyan Church, the Church of the Nazarene, the Assembly of God and other Wesleyan Holiness groups is occurring in the SDA as well. I see that as a very positive trend.
