+1!
And to definitely move on, I saw the final episode of Hercule Poirot a few days ago. It was really good, still I will miss him. I found the three first seasons of Downton Abbey in sales last week, so I am watching all of them once again. How I love this show!
And I received a box with many adaptations of Jane Austen, like of course Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth. This is still very funny and witty.
My dad found also in sales the first season of True Detective. So we will try it, anyway it looks interesting: I have a good feeling! Do you know this show?

Downton Abbey is scrumptious. It's like the television version of the experience of having a delicious high tea with your favorite companions in an elegant rose garden on the most blissfully beautiful of days. Which characters are your favorites?

That versi of Pride & Prejudice seems like the gold standard for Jane Austen adaptations. One of these days I'll actually watch it. I read the Bridget Jones' Diary book series for fun a couple of years ago, and she humorously obsesses over Colin Firth in it. Of course, Helen Fielding based the book series on Pride & Prejudice, and Colin Firth is in the movie adaptations. :)

I've only watched a couple of episodes of True Detective and was multitasking so much that I couldn't focus enough to appreciate it. I need to give it another shot. I wish the person who created this thread, GoDenver1, was still an active member because he wrote some insightful posts about the show, both earlier in this thread, and in this one:

You both have to watch the BBC version, it is really the best of the best. I did not like the one with Keira Knightley, seriously it is not believable at all - Lizzie letting down her hair on the English aristocratic society of the XIXth?? I saw almost all adaptations of Jane Austen, for Mansfield Park, the one of 1999 is very good, even if Fanny's personnality was changed a lot to fit better our modern public.
Bridget Jones is really funny, I liked the movie!

For Downton, I had a weakness for Sybil's kindness... And Matthew too... You can imagine how heart broken I was at the end of the third season. Now, I love Violet, as everyone does, and Mary. For the servants, Branson amuses me, even as a Crawley he still does. I like Mrs Patmore. Lord Grantham and Cora have a special place too, I consider Cora and Mary as two of the most beautiful women on earth. In fact I am fond of everyone, excepted perhaps Mary's lovers (my favorite was Charles, he was funny). I don't care a lot for them.

You're demonstrating the point I was making in my previous posts. :) In your opinion and in mine, nothing is actually wrong with either television show, and we both believe they are morally acceptable. Opinions are, by definition, views or judgements not necessarily based on fact or knowledge but subjective feelings. They're influenced by our culture, friends and family, religious and political beliefs, and our penchants. And our opinions impact how we gauge moral acceptability when it comes to choices such as what we watch or read.

Again, I perfectly understand why you didn't issue a warning about them, as well as your need to inquire why anyone would take strenuous objections to either. I'm not fond of The Big Bang Theory because I share @Thrash Metalhead 's dislike of shows with laugh tracks, but that's a matter of personal taste rather than personal conscience. My boyfriend and brothers have long been fans of the show. Others do object to both shows for reasons of personal conscience, though, because their opinions vastly differ from ours. Like you, I grew up watching Modern Family. It's a show I have a lot of affection for because it was a family tradition for us to enjoy watching it together, and then the next day during lunch at school I'd laugh about the episode with my friends who'd also relished it. I don't think either of us were adversely effected from longterm viewership of these shows.

In the opinion of the religious right-wing leader of the American Family Association, though, it's "like poison" and is destroying America from within. He's declared Modern Family as the most reprehensible and dangerous show on air, and accused parents who permit their children to watch it of neglectfully exposing them to moral turpitude that could be damaging to their souls. He has quite the flair for drama.

Religious right leader says “Modern Family” is like “poison”

If you look on the site Saricharity shared, Plugged In, you'll see that they've written a haughty review censuring it and lamenting that the show is responsible for insidiously changing the cultural landscape of America. Those who are staunchly right-wing have far more rigorously protested Modern Family because it's a family-oriented show than Game of Thrones which is clearly marketed for adults and rarely ever viewed by school-aged children young enough to still be very malleable.

Imagine if you'd never watched Modern Family to experience it for yourself, and you'd never even heard of it before. That you'd grown up in a very hermetic environment closed off from pop culture influence. That your very first impression was formed by a post warning of its moral objections, and then your second and third impressions were from the article above and the review on Plugged In. How do you think you'd react? Without the personal connection that you have to anchor you - without the confidence in knowing after years of watching it that it had not been detrimental to you as the critics claimed it is for young people, and that you in fact gained benefit from the show - you'd likely feel differently than you do.

Some of the objections to The Big Bang Theory have been listed in post #89. Ken Ham has also seethed over the show.

His opinion is entirely irrelevant to me, though, as is the right-winger's from American Family Association. I do respect your opinion that both shows are good. I am a believer in the adage to "not judge a book by its cover" ---- or by the opinions others have of it, and to instead judge it by reading it for yourself. I feel the same way about TV shows and movies. I'll be guided and influenced by reviews and feedback from others to an extent, but I'll hold off on forming a conclusive opinion until I've seen or read it for myself. That's not to say that if I felt strongly that I shouldn't watch it or read it, that I would anyway; I'd simply refrain from issuing judgements without the benefit of any personal experience.

--- I wanted to add that I was simply answering your questions. I'm hoping that this will not lead to another debate. It would be refreshing to just get back to talking about the shows we enjoy. --- :)

I have read your article with those objections to Modern Family. I found the second paragraph particularly interesting:

‘“What's illustrated [by Modern Family] is the way that the media influences the way that people think about life,” Fischer explained. “The portrait there that’s being presented is designed to make you think that same-sex households are wonderful, they're loving, this is paradise, this is the optimum nurturing environment for children,” Fischer continued, “to make you think that heterosexual marriage is bondage, it's dreary, it's gloomy, and we know that the social research indicates exactly the opposite.”’

I should make it abundantly clear that I entirely agree with this. Homosexuality is absolutely wrong and it is lamentable that Modern Family presents it in such a positive light.

In particular:
In Season 5, when same-sex marriage is legalised in California (something to which I cannot help but express my discontentment), Mitchell and Cameron get married. The marriage (which is no actual marriage, from a biblical viewpoint), in its entirety, is presented very positively and happily, reflecting also the stance of the average American's position on the issue. Obviously, I found this sad, since I disagreed with it.

However, I believe that the fact that a TV programme presents an opinion which differs from mine is no reason not to watch it. As such, I will gladly watch it for the laughter it brings me, all the while mentally shaking my head at the praise of homosexuality.

I understand, and even tend to partially agree with, Bryan Fischer's concern that those who watch it are ‘not realising that their view of life is being twisted in a way that's very harmful to them and harmful to our culture’. Surely, a programme which incites (acceptance of) homosexuality is not good to help fight it. Indeed, it is a bit more of poison to our society (which, nevertheless, is already very poisoned, which makes me doubt that it will make much of a difference — fortunately).

Either way, Christians have an excellent form of anti-poison: the Bible. Christians who hold the Bible as their highest authority will understand that homosexuality is wrong and will, therefore, be absolutely OK with watching said programme; they will not be affected and poisoned. This is why I am not opposed to watching it; having watched the entire series, I still oppose homosexuality! :) Similarly, Christian parents may show the programme to their children, so long as they also teach them that, biblically, homosexuality is wrong.

Ultimately, I believe that you are comparing the incomparable. The problems of Game of Thrones and of Modern Family are vastly different in nature: whereas the problems of Game of Thrones are nudity (which may lead Christians into the sin of lust) and swearing (which may lead them into the sin of swearing), the problem of Modern Family is solely the praise of homosexuality (which is unlikely to lead Bible-believing Christians into any sin). I still fail to see why you are attempting to compared them both.

You have also said:

I cannot find them there. All that post talks about is beating a dead horse — a reference which, incidentally, I still fail to understand, although that is now beside the point.

 How could you have thought she was actually comparing the 2 shows?! You missed the whole point by a mile.

I think the post where the man wrote out a rant about The Big Bang Theory being evil was deleted bc he's not a teen.

That sums this whole thing up. Can we PLEASE just move on now?

I'm going to look for the BBC version! I didn't know there was a 1999 adaptation of Mansfield Park so I'm going to look for that too. I like watching movies & tv shows of books before I read them even though it gives plot lines away bc then I have all these images in my mind. I like picturing the characters & where / how they lived. I haven't seen the Bridget Jones movies!

I LOVE Mrs. Patmore. She's so nice. I loved how her story ended so much. I liked most characters on the show. Even Thomas had his good moments. I think I like Sybil & Edith the best. Sybil bc you're right that she's incredibly kind. Edith bc she was the underdog in a way, & she ended up on top.

Really? Oh dear! :fearful: I honestly thought I had addressed it.

OK. Thanks! :)

By the way, IMHO, I think it was not that funny. Sorry. Here's a hug:  :)

Does anyone watch America's Got Talent? I don't, but my little sisters do and they've become so inspired by a couple of fantastically talented, charming girls on the show. They're learning how to play covers of this song:

I know this will come as a huge surprise but I've never seen Modern family or The Big Bang Theory either. LOL

Doesn't surprise me! Your family never left the 80s. LOL
I imagine you will eventually catch up with the rest of us maybe in your olden days, but of course, by then, you will still be out of the loop.
Hey, did you know Jennifer Aniston is pregnant again for the upteenth time? (I can see you rolling your eyes) She wrote a blog post correcting that fallacy.

I know you would hate Game of Thrones and probably modern family too...not your style and your dad would probably preach a sermon on it LOL

It's always humourous how quickly these types of threads turn into teen drama.

It's totally understandable you don't know some common English idioms. The only Portuguese I know is Linguiça bc we had it for dinner the other night, so your English is definitely way, way, way better than my Portuguese. :D
