On a serious note it is amazing how quickly the medical profession reacts to broken hips these days. She fell out of bed at about midnight and in less than 12 hours she was in the operating room getting a new hip. They have found that putting in new hips immediately and getting people back on their feet as rapidly as possible is the best way to avoid serious complications. They actually had her standing for a short period after she had her new hip put in, on that day!

If you walk in the emergency room with a blocked artery they want you on the operating table ready to go in 45 min. When the doctor found out they needed to replace the battery on my defibrillator he suggest we go straight to surgery and do the operation right then and there. I was amazed that he was so quick and ready to operate. This was like a few days before Christmas and you would think he would be off on holiday. Of course that is where they actually make their money. Also the holidays are when people eat all the wrong foods and end up in the hospital.

Yes, there are times that they do treat you right away. About the only time I went to the emergency room for myself was when I had a bad asthma attack. I had just quit smoking and the smoke, though it was bad for me over the long run, would make me hack up stuff. When I quit smoking.. no more hacking, and my body could not handle it quite yet. I have taken people to the emergency room and waited for hours with them. As soon as I talked to the admitting nurse she put me in triage and then it was straight back for treatment. I had a three day stay and the only thing that really bothered me is that they kept offering me "the patch". I had tried nicotine replacements before and all they do is to prolong the agony. I wanted to get over it as soon as possible and kept saying no. That was over 5 years ago and I still don't smoke.

Well, nicotine is a quick stress reliever. The only problem is that the addiction to it causes you to go into stress if you don't feed your addiction. I am glad to have that monkey off of my back too.
