All my Christian life I thought Solomon was saved.

But now I am not so sure.
Certainly does not look like he was.

What do you say?

Thanks,
Ed

In light of IISam.7:12-15 & IKi.11:9 comparing commentaries drawing my own conclusion, ie, I have that God hadn't fully removed God's grace from Solomon.

I am going to point to what Jesus said to His disciples when they asked Him about the fate of certain ones of their number: "What is that to you? Follow Me."
Very true.

But he is a Biblical example from which we should learn.

or you can choose not to otherwise what would be the point of Him telling us to follow Him?

Doing from memory ... he even followed Molech, that means child sacrifice.
What is going on?

The tone of Ecclesiastes seems to point to repentance late in life.

When I preached (as an Anabaptist/Restorationist) I often drew something from Solomon. Your question came up often. I always thought it strange, because it really does not matter to you or I and our relationship with Christ.

I hate hearing people ask, "Is/was _____ saved?" I find it rude and it gives me flashbacks to bad experiences with Evangelicals.

Oh, I also think it could be rude asking people on the streets: "Are you saved? How about you?".
Most of the people on the streets don't even know what "saved" means. :)

But concerning Solomon I think is very important, because he is one of the main characters of the Bible.
And the Bible is written for us to learn.

You mentioned Ecclesiastes.
Yes, I think Ecclesiastes was written late in his life because elsewhere he is saying he tried finding wisdom in pleasure and folly.

Do you think he became an addict or simply disobedient?

this can be hard to tell; many addictions happen over time; new of course there are some "hard drugs", like heroin where people get addicted with one shot, but most addictions take some time,

IISam.7:12-16 Due to following into idolatry, and as punishment for this, after Solomon's death his kingdom was rent from his son, not indeed entirely, as one portion was still preserved to the family for David's sake (IKi.11:9) the Lord punished Solomon, but did not withdraw his grace, ie, Solomon was saved.

What good is grace if one is willfully disobedient and conscious of what he was doing?

Do you maybe think Solomon was addicted?

He did accumulate 300 wives and 700 concubines.
And they were pagan, the exact opposite to what God told him.
I wonder what makes someone so clearly disobey God.

What are your criteria for being saved in the OT?

I Kings 3:3 states, 'Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places' (ESV). Do the latter sins exclude him from entry into the kingdom?

That is a good answer, been saved or not is just between ourselves and God, and we can't judge others. Solomon sinned gravely but the Grace of God is amazing, so I don't know. It is almost like predicting the end of time, which God told us no one knows, and all the people try to predict it failed rather badly.

OK. Fair enough.
What do we do then?
Do we look at Solomon as an example or not?

Also, what type of wisdom do you think he had?
Wisdom of God or the regular wisdom?

Well, we do not enter the Kingdom because we sinned more or less, we enter if sins are forgiven ...

Abraham took another wife according to Gen 16:3. There were consequences for polygamy (bigamy) for Abraham in Gen 16, but that did not ultimately prevent him from being a man of faith.

Agreed.

So how do you exclude Solomon when 1 Kings 3:3 states, 'Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father'?

Yes, he had considerable sins that needed forgiving, but we are told he loved God and followed the (godly) statutes given by his father, David.

Yes, but Abraham made the faith chapter of Hebrews 11(?), Solomon did not.
Abraham was known for obedience, Solomon was not.

Obedience of faith effected through repentance is first and foremost thus Solomon blew it at the end yet grace was there, ie, gives me a crack at it - definitely not blowing it in my end days learning from Solomon - God won't be so generous with me. Solomon squeezed through that narrow gate due to external purposes of our Lord is the best way I can even understand it.

Old Jack

btw been a long time since I've been in this terrific area and thank you, ie, this needed revisiting. And needs more revisiting
