Like I said, purgatory is a deception. Many will go to Hell trusting in the false purgatory doctrine. We can't say we weren't warned can we?

That's not an answer. Continually asserting the exact same thing in response to a refutation of that assertion doesn't do much.

Sure it is. It's a very strong point. Those counting on purgatory will be eternally disappointed. Eternity is a very long time. We had better live righteously in this life.

The conversation has gone like this:
You: "Purgatory is evil/wrong/bad."
Me: "No it isn't, and here's why."
You: "Purgatory is evil/wrong/bad."
Me: "No it isn't, and here's why. Again."
You: "Purgatory is evil/wrong/bad."

In all of your posts in this thread, I haven't seen any actual substantiation for your claim, much less any response to points against your claim. It's just the same assertion over and over without any support.

So, care to actually respond to the counterpoints?

That's a link to your Catholic encyclopedia....I quoted from a Catholic website. I got all the information from the "horse's mouth". Therefore, I know what your church teaches.

So what are you trying to prove? Do you agree with the quote?

Not quite sure how this squares up with:

Scared of Catholic teachings? What a strange question to ask. I don't read them because the majority of those teachings are contrary to what the Bible teaches. Give me a good reason why I should read something that I know to be contrary to what what I believe?
If you don't read something then you're not going to understand it or "know" it.

Edit: Also, I just searched through this thread and don't see you actually linking to any Catholic websites in the past few days... So what exactly are you talking about in this post?

Hey folks, I am trying to understand the doctrine of Purgatory and have only encountered very divergent views from various Catholics which range from the idea that purgatory is a very brief experience that is very pleasant - much like taking a refreshing shower before getting ready for a party to one in which purgatory is a lengthy time of punishment for one's temporal sins. This time can be shortened by the mystical use of indulgences.

So, what do you Catholics actually believe and teach?

I edited my original post....I never quoted from the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia on this thread. However, I do read alot of the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia and know quite a bit about Catholic doctrines/teachings.

Being "scared" of a Catholic doctrine isn't the issue....we need to use "wisdom" and "discernment".

Check out the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia...then compare what you read there with the Bible.

BTW, I'm not Catholic

If you are concerned with official Church teaching, you should be checking the Catechism and the documents it cites, not New Advent.

Preecher "Those counting on purgatory"?

What?

You mean it's bad to count on God to forgive us for and cleanse us of our sins?
There is now NO condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

I know you aren't Catholic. Actually, the Catechism of the Catholic Church is the most reliable resource I have found and recommend it over the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia.

The problem is that Purgatory is presented in numerous ways at numerous levels in the Catholic Church which has resulted in general misunderstanding, certainly on my part.

Purgatory, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church is where temporal sins are punished. One must be guilty and condemned of those sins if one is to be punished for them, no?
I'm sorry but I don't see where purgatory is a 'punishment':

1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.606607 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire: As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.608

Purgatory is then a... purification... entirely different from the punishment of the damned (condemned.)

I certainly agree with that...I guess it depends on the person to whom you are inquiring.

It depends on how you define certain words: is discipline a punishment? Purgatory is certainly a place where people are disciplined for wrongs that are not forgiven in this age, but are forgiven in the next. If your count discipline and punishment as synonyms then it is a punishment, but if you make a distinction between discipline and punishment then Purgatory is not a vengeful punishment, but rather a loving disciplinary action.

you are Baptist, if we ask the differant Baptist groups differant theological questions you get differant answers

what is counted as doctrine about Purgatory is very little, as stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, so the rest is part of differant schools of thought
