We have salamanders near the reservoir and then the standard blue belly desert lizards, which can get very aggressive. You do not want to pick one up. They can get very large in size.

My daugher used to pick up the small lizards and put them on her ears like earrings. (They'd bite down on the earlobes.) I hated it when she did that. Bleh!

Welcome, we are discussing the wonderful critters that the Lord has made.

Yay critters! I don't see a lot of interesting stuff where I live minus the occasional grey or black squirrel those are cool looking

4 cats and 1 dog...yeah...I'm an animal lover...(don't have digital pics of the dog...camera died, waiting of the old fashioned film and CD to get back ROFL)

I even keep scraps out front for the stray cats, and my backyard is ever so slowly (landscaping and plants are expensive) being transformed into a year round bird sanctuary :)

My favorite thing in the mornings (okay afternoons) is to wake up, and drink my coffee while watching the little birdies frolick in the backyard...

So far I've 67 different species that visit our yard and feeders :)

4 dogs (3 English Toy Spaniels, aka Brats, and a Cocker Spaniel puppy) and a 30 gallon fish tank. We have a 120 gallon tank that we have yet to set up, but when we set it up it will be a marine tank. I am not sure what all we will put in it, but I do know there will be a Volitan Lionfish, a Yellow Tang, a few other Tangs and alot of invertebrate life in it.

My tux likes FAGE Greek Yogurt every day, twice daily if we have it, but not the nonfat or two percent variety.

He has expensive tastes.

Even cats know that lowfat dairy has no nutritional value;)

I finally gave away the last of my fish aquariums and fishies when we moved into the new house...
after years of being the only tank cleaner...I'd had enough :p

Enjoy the marine aquarium...they are rather lovely...and peaceful :)

We have a state of the art filtration system which will make cleaning the tank SO MUCH EASIER! :D

we had "average" filters...

I was the "state of the art" cleaner :p

Though Bug has been asking if she can have a small tank in her room...despite history, I'm tempted to say yes ^_^

I have average filters right now, they are horrible. I hate cleaning them. The new filter is a type of wet/dry filter with a protein skimmer and is very, very efficient. I won't have to clean it or change water much at all. Thank God! A water change on a 120 gallon salt water tank can be a daunting task!

My Auburn Tigers let me down this weekend. I'm not getting my hopes up for the rest of the season. If we get beat by Tennessee next weekend then I'm definatly washing my hands of the season, start looking down the road.

Someone in here has to be a college football fan

Haha, Navy beat Rutgers!

Some wouldn't call that college football but still... I'm a Gators fan otherwise. Hubs brother in law played on the '96 national team.

Shubunkin, how big is your pond? Do you mind me asking how wide it is and how deep it is? A few of the rocks in the pond look really big.

The pond I want to make will consist of a small pond at the far end that will spill over a small waterfall (or 2 or 3) into a stream that will feed a much longer pond at the end closest to the house. I think I will only make the pond closest to the house deep enough to have large koi in it. I am thinking it should be about 3 feet deep at its deepest.

I didn't see this until now. I've been busy with my pond, so I hope you understand. ;)

My pond is 1500 gallons. I've lost the exact measurements, but it is 3-1/2' deep on the left side, and about 18" deep on the right side (bog area). It's approximately 12' or more across on the deep end, and 8' or 9' on the bog end. That's a very rough estimate. If you want to have Koi, or large goldfish, it really should be a minimum of 3-1/2' feet deep because this protects the fish from predators. I know some of people in our area that have ponds 2-3' deep, and they end up losing all of their fish just from birds and raccoons in our area. The bare minimum, they say, is 3-1/2' deep. They wonder why mine is so successful, and that's why. Also the large rocks provide shelter for the fish. It's amazing how many fish fit under one rock, and they must be packed in there like sardines. ;)

You can also check out Koi-bito.com forum and see what people have built. They are very hard-core Koi experts, so watch out. :) But there is some fascinating information to be had. Just a word of warning for hobbyists, they will give advice to us, but have very little tolerance for people that think Koi can live in a 100 gallon pond in the backyard, for example. I think that my size of pond is the bare minimum the members will try to help out with.

We did most of the digging for this pond, and then hired a landscaper to do the rest. It cost us $9,000 to have it built, not including plants. The landscaper gave me the goldfish - 10 of them. Some of them quite are quite fancy. He put in equipment that was good enough for a pond twice this size. In some ways that is good, and in some ways that is not. It has worked out well in the long run.

Got any more questions, just let me know. For technical advice, ask koi-bito.com/forum, and they will answer it much better than I can.

Good luck with your pond, Michael.

CAREFUL that the teenagers here do not see that!

Can you imagine?

Some vendors used to have these live bug pins ... real live insects attached to a chain. And you would put them into their cage and feed and water them during the night. Do you remember that trend? I guess the vendors forgot or overlooked the fact that all animals go p... well, I think that word might be censored.

Incidentally, Bishop BENJAMIN got that book "All Animals Go Poop" and gave it as a present to a two year old who was learning to be potty trained.

And soon the girls might be wearing live lizard earrings, of course?
Well, maybe lizard earrings will be better than those rings in the nose and mouth. :)

Thank you for the pond information. I was planning on making my pond 3 foot deep, but what you said makes perfect sense to me. I wont hurt me to make it an additional 1/2-1 foot deep. The size of the pond makes sense for koi. Koi can grow quite large and thus need a good sized pond to grow in. The large rocks make sense as well. My dad did all the work to build his pond that I posted pictures of last summer himself. I think it will probably be the same with me. The funny thing about me and my dad working on the pond is that when we build things we tend to WAY overbuild them! First I have to build the deck on the back of the house. That will take the 1st half of next summer so the pond will take the 2nd half of the summer. In the mean time I will check out the website and once I get the plans drawn up for the pond I will send you a drawing of what it will look like if you want.
Again, thank you for your response and advice.
Michael
