• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

He just retired after 40 years with the same company, so I can't help but have this overwhelming feeling that something bad could happen to him right when he gets to ENJOY his life.

He's a year older than his dad was when he died.

Plus he's Type A and I know stress is a killer.

He's beat this AND a close call with a heart attack...oh and a bad fall at work on his hip....all in the last year.

I think someone is looking out for him. :)

I think there should be balanced moderation with represtentatives from both Traditional and Progressive sides of the forum, with those nominated to have not only a good understanding of the opposing side, but also to have been around in this forum long enough to spot any troublemakers before they explode into flames!

These three I feel are the most well-suited to the job!

Jon, you just made me smile.

This really means a lot to me coming from you little bro.

But that sentiment is exactly why I can't be a mod right now. I don't like disappointing people that put trust in me, and school is too much of a priority for me so I can't make any promises other than the ones I already have.

So I'll say this in spanish now, in case no one understands my English (haha...I'm just practicing actually).

¡Realmente no tengo tiempo!

(I really don't have time).

What exactly would the job entail? For example, how many hours per day does a mod need to be on? etc.

I mean i have a good idea what they do since i have been here for a number of years, i just dont know what goes on behind the scenes.
Happy, being a moderator in this forum, with the shape it's in right now is going to take a monumental amount of work by a small group of people (moderators) who respect one another and get along. That doesn't mean that they would necessarily have to agree with everything the other one does, it just means that they must respect and like each other enough to LISTEN to what the other one has to say.

In my present "job", we have a thread in my forum called, "The Staff Conference Room". This thread cannot be seen by anyone who is not staff. It is in that thread that we often take posts that we are having to "moderate" to get EVERYONE's take on the situation. Now, of course, I'm not talking about FLAMINGLY OBVIOUS posts that need to be removed, those you act on quickly and accordingly. The Staff Conference Room is for those posts that are borderline, and you just want someone else's thoughts on the matter. If one of us sees a "troublesome" post, we copy the link to it and put it in the conference thread and go from there.

A deleted post can take a moderator a lot more time than one might think. You don't just click on delete and go on your merry way.

After deleting a post, I PM the author of the post explaining what policy/rule they "violated" (though in my forum on the other site, that word isn't used), highlighting the offensive portion of their post, and try to work with them on not making the same mistakes in the future.

In the forum I work in, because of it's sensitive nature, not much in the way of "offensiveness" is tolerated. If the poster doesn't step up to the plate, correct their critical thinking errors, and start posting without flaming others, etc., they will soon find themselves on a temporary vacation that will turn into a full time one very quickly after that if they come back doing the same thing they were before.

It's a rewarding "job", but it is very time consuming. If the moderators don't get along well, it will make the job gruelling.

In order to "whip this forum into shape" it's going to take moderators who have the time to be here LOTS, and who are willing to address each and every infraction, no matter how small, quickly and fairly.

What I observe in this forum is that posters have a difficult time in addressing the body, or the message of another's post, and appear to go straight to personally attacking the author.

I would not tolerate this. I'm just being plain up front, and I don't care who the "perpetrator" was.

I AM fair, and as long as someone approaches me respectfully, I am more than willing to discuss the issue. But I will NOT argue over it.

Policies and guidelines need to be clearly posted, so that when a post has to be deleted due to an infraction, a link to those can be provided to the author so that they can re-familiarize themselves with such.

In short Happy, it's a huge job, it takes up lots of time, and it can often be a thankless one...though I have not found that to be the case on my site. I often see entire threads starting for the purpose of thanking the staff for their hard work, by members.

What matters here is just what do the members expect? What is it they want to see accomplished? If it's a slipshod, anything goes type of forum, then I would not "be your girl". If it's a forum run by guidelines that are clearly outlined and enforced, then I might be your girl.

Oh, and TrustAndObey? ***THWACK***

te amo tu tambien, mi hermana

Boy, is my spanish rusty. I'm not even sure I spelled all of that right, lol.

I'm glad you still love me after offering to heap a bunch more "stuff" on your plate.

Was that your really long (ha) way of saying you'd do it????

We need someone to whip us into shape.

And honestly Sassy, I think it would only be time-consuming at the onset, especially getting used to the new rules. After a while I think everyone would get the drift that they have two choices .....go ahead and say it, and get in trouble....or just rephrase how you were saying it before, and add in a pinch of respect & brotherly love.

You've been nominated and seconded, and LongHair said he'd sponsor all candidates (you have to have a current mod sponsor)....so we're set if you'll say yes.

Okay, so if we still need mods anyway....why couldn't we get some in now and go from there? They may do such an excellent job that we don't need to self-police.

I gotta say, I really don't like having my chat experiences (haha) hindered, and if we come to chat, but then feel like it's our duty to go check out five reports....then deal with those....hello....my chat experience is half gone and I haven't said a word about Christ.

If you have 4-5 people that are dedicated to that job, they'll get into a groove and presto bango, it's over and they can chat away after that.

I'm just gonna say it, I don't like the idea of the self-policing. Maybe because it's new and we haven't ever done it before, but it just seems so open to error.

If I were to sit down and do a pro/con list I can already tell you I'd see more cons on that one.

Here's what I've gathered from this thread but unfortunately I had to wade through a LOT of posts to come to these numbers, so if I missed anyone....PLEASE let me know.

Tall73-Nominated by Woobadooba
Seconded by Night (and Jon0388g)

Reddogs-Nominated by NightEternal
Seconded by Honor (and OntheDL)

Mjona3-Nominated by TrustAndObey (in a different thread)
Seconded by NightEternal

IceDragon101-Nominated by NightEternal
Seconded by TrustAndObey

Sophia7-Nominated by NightEternal
Seconded by OntheDL (and Jon0388g)

SassySDA-Nominated by TrustAndObey
Seconded by Honor (and Happy)

StormyOne-Nominated by Mjona3
Seconded by TrustAndObey

TheCountryDoc-Nominated by TrustAndObey
Seconded by Jon0388g

I'm seconding Stormy's nomination right now, so you won't find it in any of the previous posts.

Out of those people Mjona3, IceDragon101, and thecountrydoc have said they would do it. Sassy didn't exactly SAY yes or no, so I'm asking her to step in and clarify.

I was nominated and seconded but I cannot do it, so I'm taking myself out of the running. College comes first.

That's 8 prospects so far and I think they're all really good ones.

I'm not asking for a vote at this point, just tallying up the numbers. :)

Anyone else?

EDIT: I'd also ask that anyone that has been nominated and seconded to please let us know if this is something they'd WANT to do.

That looks like a good list. I would like to suggest that each person be allowed a fixed number of votes, e.g. 4, and all those who obtain more than 50% of the votes cast becomes a moderator. We will also have to decide how often we will select new moderators, quarterly, semi-annually, annually or bi-annually.
