  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Calvin's reasoning for the doctrine of reprobation

John Calvin was not trained in first-order logic. No one was at his time. Nevertheless, let me analyze his writing on the doctrine of reprobation in Institutes of the Christian Religion. Book III, Chapter 23, Section 1:

The human mind, when it hears this doctrine, cannot restrain its petulance,
"petulance" is an emotive word. It belongs in rhetoric, not in a formal argumentation setting. I prefer to stick to objective logic when I argue.

but boils and rages as if aroused by the sound of a trumpet.
He exaggerated the human mind's reaction. Again, it is rhetoric, not logic.

Many professing a desire to defend the Deity from an invidious charge admit the doctrine of election, but deny that any one is reprobated (Bernard. in Die Ascensionis, Serm. 2). This they do ignorantly and childishly
more emotive words

since there could be no election without its opposite reprobation. God is said to set apart those whom he adopts for salvation. It were most absurd to say, that he admits others fortuitously, or that they by their industry acquire what election alone confers on a few. Those, therefore, whom God passes by he reprobates,
He did not use the word "therefore" in the FOL sense. I am having trouble following his reasoning. For my taste, he needed to arrange his argument more linearly.

and that for no other cause but because he is pleased to exclude them from the inheritance which he predestines to his children. Nor is it possible to tolerate the petulance of men, in refusing to be restrained by the word of God, in regard to his incomprehensible counsel, which even angels adore.
Calvin's argument seems to be based on emotive rhetoric and what computer science people call spaghetti logic.

I like to invite modern-day Calvin scholars to express themselves in my subreddit according to its rules.

A 16-year-old student allegedly shot and killed a 15-year-old boy during an altercation in the boys’ bathroom at Joppatowne High School in Joppa, Maryland, on Friday, according to Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler. The suspect has been arrested.

The victim, identified as Warren Curtis Grant, was quickly attended to by fellow students, school nurses and the principal after being removed from the bathroom, Gahler told reporters at a news conference.

Gahler said that the student was airlifted to a trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.

How I Became a Critic of Guns

In the mid 1970’s I was living in Ft. Lauderdale and working in a water plant. Our power company was Florida Power and Light (now Florida Power), and FPL workers went on strike. As part of the strike, union activists started shooting the power lines down. Neighborhoods were struck with sporadic power outages for this reason. I don’t have this on videotape, but it looks like union activists were firing high powered rifles into the air in populated areas. I don’t know how many shots you have to fire to bring a power line down, especially after dark. After all, they don’t want to get caught doing it. What goes up must come down, so it may be pure luck no one was hurt.

When the strike was settled, the union demanded that no one be prosecuted for shooting down power lines. Florida Power and Light agreed to this. I don’t see how the union can even be allowed to make such a demand. I thought that union activists shooting at power lines should be prosecuted to the limit of the law.

I was working in a water plant and we were trying to keep the water flowing. People shooting the power lines down certainly weren’t helping us.

I don’t know if anything like this has happened anywhere else in the country. The media doesn’t always help us keep track of things that are important. This series of events helped to convince me that widespread ownership of guns in modern America is making life worse for the average citizen. It certainly makes life more dangerous. We can’t assume that the people who own guns are going to be reasonable or responsible. This is true even when they aren’t exactly criminals in the usual sense of the word.

Just downloaded some Anglican Documents

Hello folks. As a Catholic, the Anglican church is fascinating, and I know very little about it, except that the Anglicans are the closest brethren to Catholics, and have beautiful church interiors. So, today, I am downloading some Anglican theology onto my computer for the artificial intelligence to learn. Do you guys have any more theologians or documents that you recommend? I might install a 3rd document into the AI, so it has enough data, but two should do the trick.

Here are the documents:

1. An Outline of Anglican Life: https://anglicanministries.org/wp-content/uploads/An-Outline-of-an-Anglican-Life.pdf
2. Book of Common Prayer (shared between Episcopal and Anglican, already downloaded in July): https://www.episcopalchurch.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/02/book-of-common-prayer-2006.pdf

Sight and Sound Theater

As anyone ever been to Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster, Pennsylvania or Branson, Missouri? They are known to put on Bible stories and turn them into musical, in somewhat style of Broadway.

I've seen Joseph some years ago. This Labor Day weekend, I went to see Daniel at the cinemas, which was beyond incredible.

The shows playing right now are Esther in Branson and Daniel in Lancaster. This coming Christmas, The Miracle of Christmas will be playing. Then the next year, Noah will be in Lancaster and David will be in Branson.

You can even stream Sight and Sound shows from the comfort of your own home.

So Sight and Sound is actually worth checking out.

Laundry?

A few years ago I had to deal with doing laundry when my washer broke. I couldn't afford to fix it because I live in the middle nowhere and everything cost more to get someone to come out here. So, I had to deal with doing it all by hand for about 4 months while I saved up enough money to get it fixed. I tried the good old scrubbing it with my hands and even on a washboard and got blisters then calluses on my knuckles. That was unpleasant to say the least. LOL So I researched and found the 5gallon bucket method, tweaked it a bit and made a pretty decent system. (I will post a pic I created of it below) I am waiting on yet another part to come in for my washer and have been having to do it by hand...again. So I figured I would post this so others laundry can be easier in case of power loss or some other reason you can't use the washer. ( Use laundry soap sparingly so rinsing is easier)

Why Kamala’s Campaign Is Spiraling Into Desperation Mode

There are a lot of ways you can tell that a political campaign is in trouble. Of course you can look at the polls, and the various models that aggregate those polls. And right now the models do not look good for Kamala Harris. Right now, for example, Nate Silver’s model gives Donald Trump a 60% chance of winning, with a projected 277 electoral votes.

'I do the weave'

Sounds like an exciting new dance step from Donald.

'Take a step to the right, take a step to the right, take a step to the right, take a step to the right, take a step to the .......'

Judge delays Trump hush money sentencing until after election

Judge Merchan delays Trump's sentencing to Nov. 26.

NEW YORK, Sept 6 (Reuters) - A New York judge on Friday delayed former U.S. President Donald Trump's sentencing in his hush money criminal case until after the Nov. 5 election, writing that he wants to avoid the unwarranted perception of a political motive.

No big surprise in my opinion.

Was Noah & Co Benevolent Giants (very tall people)

There is a legend about the birth of Noah

THE BIRTH OF NOAH

Methuselah took a wife for his son Lamech, and she bore him a man child.

The body of the babe was white as snow and red as a blooming rose, and the hair of his head and his long locks were white as wool, and his eyes like the rays of the sun.

When he opened his eyes, he lighted up the whole house, like the sun, and the whole house was very full of light.

And when he was taken from the hand of the midwife, he opened his mouth and praised the Lord of righteousness.

His father Lamech was afraid of him, and fled, and came to his own father Methuselah. And he said to him: "I have begotten a strange son; he is not like a human being, but resembles the children of the angels of heaven, and his nature is different, and he is not like us, and his eyes are as the rays of the sun, and his countenance is glorious.

And it seems to me that he is not sprung from me, but from the angels, and I fear that in his days a wonder may be wrought on the earth.
And now, my father, I am here to petition thee and implore thee, that thou mayest go to Enoch, our father, and learn from him the truth, for his dwelling place is among the angels."

And when Methuselah heard the words of his son, he went to Enoch, to the ends of the earth, and he cried aloud, and Enoch heard his voice, and appeared before him, and asked him the reason of his coming.

Methuselah told him the cause of his anxiety, and requested him to make the truth known to him. Enoch answered, and said: "The Lord will do a new thing in the earth. There will come a great destruction on the earth, and a deluge for one year. This son who is born unto thee will be left on the earth, and his three children will be saved with him, when all mankind that are on the earth shall die.

And there will be a great punishment on the earth, and the earth will be cleansed from all impurity. And now make known to thy son Lamech that he who was born is in truth his son, and call his name Noah, for he will be left to you, and he and his children will be saved from the destruction which will come upon the earth." When Methuselah had heard the words of his father, who showed him all the secret things, he returned home, and he called the child Noah, for he would cause the earth to rejoice in compensation for all destruction.

And in the book 'AN HISTORICAL TREATISE OF THE TRAVELS OF NOAH INTO Europe' it suggests that Noah was a Benevolent Giant (very tall ), this would also explain Tartaria and their buidings as in the book it also mentions that Noah & his sons were in Tartaria.

When Was the Tomb of Jesus REALLY Discovered, National Geographic Magazine

Something from Nat Geo popped up on my phone, an ad to subscribe to the magazine. By subscribing, you supposedly get this article.
I remember the whole controversy over the Talpiot tomb years ago where Simcha Jacobovici (sp) claimed Jesus empty Tomb was found. Is anyone familiar with this new article? Are they writing about the Talpiot tomb or is this supposedly another one?
Could this be Jesus’ Tomb and will Christianity crumble?

Biblical Banking

Hello folks. Today's devotional covers Biblical banking, as in how to honor God and His kingdom with our finances. Spoiler alert: Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God will give you money if you give the church money.

Date
September 6, 2024 | Biblical Banking
Verse
Exodus 22:25-27a (NIV): "If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest. If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset, because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has."

Deuteronomy 23:19-20 (NIV): "Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest. You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess."

Proverbs 13:11 (NIV): "Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow."

Proverbs 22:7 (NIV): "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender."

Luke 14:28 (NIV): "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?"
Explanation
These five passages from the Bible provide guidance on financial matters, planning for the future, and making ethical choices when it comes to money. They emphasize the importance of honesty, generosity, responsibility, and compassion in dealing with finances.
  1. Exodus 22:25-27a: This passage instructs against treating lending as a business deal by charging interest on loans given to fellow Israelites who are needy. It emphasizes the importance of helping those in need without exploiting their vulnerability, encouraging compassion and generosity within the community.
  2. Deuteronomy 23:19-20: These verses forbid charging interest to other Israelites but allow it with foreigners. The purpose is to prevent fellow believers from being burdened by debt and ensure that the Lord blesses them in their endeavors. This passage highlights the importance of fairness, compassion, and ethical business practices within the community.
  3. Proverbs 13:11 & Proverbs 22:7: These proverbs warn against dishonest money practices (Proverbs 13:11) and emphasize that wealth is not a guarantee of power or freedom from servitude (Proverbs 22:7). They encourage Christians to work diligently, save wisely, and avoid the temptation of exploiting others for financial gain.
  4. Luke 14:28: This passage encourages careful planning before embarking on significant projects or investments. It serves as a reminder that responsible stewardship requires considering the potential risks and costs involved.
Societal Relevance
In the modern world, Christians can honor these teachings by practicing financial integrity in their personal lives and business dealings. This includes saving wisely, spending within one's means, avoiding risky investments, and ensuring fair treatment of all parties involved in financial transactions. Companies should also strive to make ethical monetary decisions that prioritize the well-being of employees, customers, and the wider community over short-term profits.

To avoid being foolhardy with finances, Christians can seek advice from trusted mentors or financial advisers, educate themselves on sound money management practices, establish a budget to track income and expenses, and regularly evaluate their investments for alignment with their values and long-term goals. By following these principles, they can ensure that their use of wealth honors God and demonstrates the love and compassion He calls us to exhibit in all areas of life.

Money management as Christians can be a difficult task for some. For myself, it is relatively easy to manage money as I am not a materialist, and also by staying within budget, plus I am naturally energy efficient using LED lights and a smart thermostat that came with my place. For instance, my A/C is set to 79°F (26°C) during the day, 73°F (23°C) during the night and 84°F (29°C) when out and about. During the winter, heat is not necessary except for a few weeks during January, as the other rooms around my place generate enough heat. Also, most of my clothing is second hand, therefore reducing the cost of garments. Shopping at smaller grocery stores with less choice such as Aldi can also reduce impulse purchases, such as sweets.

We as Christians must be willing to part ways with our money for the greater good of society. As a Christian, donating money to organizations has also become important over the past year or so. Typically, I donate to a statewide organization that helps folks such as veterans and the disenfranchised pay for heating and cooling bills. During certain months, I may donate to other nonprofits. The hard part is picking an organization that is transparent and uses their donations wisely. Luckily, my dad’s friend runs a nonprofit that is transparent known as Crisis Aid International. As I have slumped on donating over this summer, I will donate to them this September. Finally, God wants us to treat others the way we want to be treated, so that is the reason why it is important to my faith to make good decisions with money, as money belongs to God.

Do not stir up or awaken love until it pleases

Song of Solomon 2:

7 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or the does of the field, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.
This theme is repeated 2 more times:

Song of Solomon 3:

5 O daughters of Jerusalem, I adjure you by the gazelles and does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until the time is right.
Song of Solomon 8:

4 I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you not stir up or awaken love until it pleases.
Let love take its natural course. Wait for it. Don't force it prematurely. Let it rest until the time is right.

The LORD REPENTED of the EVIL which he thought to do unto his people

Young's Literal Translation, Exodus 32:

12 why do the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil [H7451] He brought them out to slay them among mountains, and to consume them from off the face of the ground? turn back from the heat of Thine anger, and repent of the evil [H7451] against Thy people.
Strong's Hebrew: 7451. רָע (ra') — 667 Occurrences

This word has a wide range of meanings and usages, Strong's Exhaustive Concordance:

adversity, affliction, bad, calamity, displeasure, distress
From ra'a'; bad or (as noun) evil (natural or moral) -- adversity, affliction, bad, calamity, + displease(-ure), distress, evil((- favouredness), man, thing), + exceedingly, X great, grief(-vous), harm, heavy, hurt(-ful), ill (favoured), + mark, mischief(-vous), misery, naught(-ty), noisome, + not please, sad(-ly), sore, sorrow, trouble, vex, wicked(-ly, -ness, one), worse(-st), wretchedness, wrong. (Incl. Feminine raaah; as adjective or noun.).
It could mean as trivial as mischief to as serious as evil.

NIV Exodus 32:

12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.
In this case, NIV opted to translate the same Hebrew words into two different English words to suit the respective immediate contexts. The word "evil" is used for what the Egyptians say, and the word "disaster" is used for what God does to the people.

King James Bible Exodus 32:

14 the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
New King James Version:

So the LORD relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.
Even the King James translators modernized their old King James' "evil" to the new King James' "harm".

In what sense is the word evil used in Exodus 32:12–14?

Most versions agree that the Hebrew word means harm or disaster in this context.

Why is it so hard to ignore troublemakers?

I've been told that I should ignore people online who are mean, rude, disrespectful, etc. I try, but it's so hard for me...why, I wonder? Could it have something to do with being bullied for much of my life? I don't expect everyone to be nice to me all the time, nor do I think highly of myself. Is there a way to avoid letting things bother you?

As Jimmy Carter nears 100, he is buoyed by Harris’s run for president

Former president Jimmy Carter, 99, turned to his son several weeks ago as he watched President Joe Biden, 81, announce that he was passing the torch to a younger generation. “That’s sad,” Carter said softly.
Carter and Biden are friends and share much in common as members of the elite group elected to the White House. Biden is the oldest to ever serve, and Carter has lived longer than any other former president. Neither went to Harvard or Yale. Biden is the son of a used-car salesman, and Carter’s father ran a peanut farm. Now, both will be one-term presidents.
Carter has been in hospice for 18 months, and his health slipped further after his wife, Rosalynn, died in November, two members of his family said. But recently, as the former president’s 100th birthday approaches on Oct. 1, he is talking more, asking about the fast-changing 2024 presidential campaign and delighting in the momentum behind Vice President Kamala Harris, the new Democratic nominee. He is even eating mini cupcakes — red velvet and caramel are his favorites.
James Earl “Chip” Carter III said in an interview with The Washington Post that his father spent days watching all of the speeches from the Democratic National Convention last month that he recorded for him. “He thought Michelle Obama was the best, and he thought Kamala was great, too,” he said.

Carter turns 100 on Oct. 1st. That is quite the milestone. My grandma made it to almost 101. Maybe he will live long enough to vote this election.

Sectarian bias

We are all Trinitarians here, united in our love for the Lord and in our joy to praise His name. We find delight in the scriptures, especially when the apostles bear witness to the deity of our Lord, Jesus Christ, teaching us that He is indeed God incarnate, and we rejoice. However, there are some who claim that our English Bible translations exhibit bias in certain passages. I would like to enumerate these passages, the so-called "proof texts."
PassageESV (evangelical protestant)ASV (protestant)NWT (Jehovah's witnesses)
John 1:1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god.
John 1:18No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.No man has seen God at any time; the only-begotten god who is in the bosom [position] with the Father is the one that has explained him.
John 20:28Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.In answer Thomas said to him: "My Lord and my God!"
Acts 20:28Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood.Pay attention to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the holy spirit has appointed YOU overseers, to shepherd the congregation of God, which he purchased with the blood of his own [Son].
Romans 9:5To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.whose are the fathers, and of whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.to whom the forefathers belong and from whom the Christ [sprang] according to the flesh: God, who is over all, [be] blessed forever. Amen.
Colossians 1:16-1916 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. (17) And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (18) And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. (19) For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,16 for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him; (17) and he is before all things, and in him all things consist. (18) And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (19) For it was the good pleasure of the Father that in him should all the fulness dwell;16 because by means of him all [other] things were created in the heavens and upon the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, no matter whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. All [other] things have been created through him and for him. 17 Also, he is before all [other] things and by means of him all [other] things were made to exist, 18 and he is the head of the body, the congregation. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that he might become the one who is first in all things; 19 because [God] saw good for all fullness to dwell in him,
Titus 2:13waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;while we wait for the happy hope and glorious manifestation of the great God and of [the] Saviour of us, Christ Jesus,
2Peter 1:1Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and the Saviour Jesus Christ:Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a faith, held in equal privilege with ours, by the righteousness of our God and [the] Saviour Jesus Christ:
Rev 1:8"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."I am the Alpha and the Omega, saith the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."I am the Al'pha and the Ome'ga," says Jehovah God, "the One who is and who was and who is coming, the Almighty."
It is evident that the ESV consistently opts for Trinitarian translations, the ASV often selects them, whereas the NWT invariably avoids interpretations that could be perceived as attributing divinity to Jesus. It might be argued that the ESV exhibits a bias towards evangelical doctrine, the ASV maintains a more balanced approach, and the NWT displays a pronounced bias in favor of Jehovah's Witnesses' teachings.

Harris Campaign Raises $361 Million In August, Tripling Trump Total

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign raised $361 million in August, more than triple what former President Donald Trump brought in and the most a presidential campaign has ever raised in a single month.
The campaign said it has $404 million in cash on hand, a total spread across the Harris campaign, the Democratic National Committee and other joint fundraising committees.
Trump’s campaign announced Wednesday it raised $130 million in August and had $295 million cash on hand.
Wow! Lots of enthusiasm with this.

Why does heresy no longer occur as a formal charge?

In the recent thread on heretics a common claim was something like, "Christian churches used to charge people with heresy and impose penalties, but they don't anymore." I think this is factually accurate, but I want to raise the question of why heresy no longer has much of a function within Christian churches. Why are formal charges of heresy "old hat," and relatively uncommon in our day and age?*

For example, from what I can find, the last two times the Catholic Church charged anyone with heresy were 2004 and 1997 (link - Reidy was eventually convicted).

(Although this thread is about charging heretics with heresy, I will still link to my thread on propositional heresy, which is related. ViaCrucis' post on heresy is also useful.)

Those who wish to argue that heresy is still alive and well, and is no less common today than it was in centuries past, are of course welcome to argue their position.

* A formal charge of heresy is a charge of heresy leveled by a church authority in their official capacity.

Tucker Carlson Repeats the Conspiracy Theory, that the Nazis Didn't Really Plan the Holocaust

Regardless of what your political part affiliation is, if any,
this sort of opinion by Tucker Carlson OUGHT TO BE POINTED OUT AS
A CRUDE IGNORANCE OF HISTORICAL FACTS.

By the way, the IBM company sold Hitler its punch card inventory control
machines, so that the Nazies could keep track of what was in every rolling
box car in Germany. And THAT, included people headed to slave camps,
and extermination camps. The Holocaust was PLANNED.

Go read the book.

Obviously, Tucker Carlson hasn't.
