  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does it mean, this birth from the word of God?

1 Peter 1:22-25 GNB Now that by your obedience to the truth you have purified yourselves and have come to have a sincere love for other believers, love one another earnestly with all your heart. (23) For through the living and eternal word of God you have been born again as the children of a parent who is immortal, not mortal. (24) As the scripture says, "All human beings are like grass, and all their glory is like wild flowers. The grass withers, and the flowers fall, (25) but the word of the Lord remains forever." This word is the Good News that was proclaimed to you.

You are born again, so the scriptures say of Christians, but how did this happen?

Former President Donald Trump says he would create a government efficiency commission to audit the entire federal government

ByJONATHAN J. COOPER Associated Press
September 5, 2024,

PHOENIX -- Former President Donald Trump said Thursday he would create a government efficiency commission to audit the entire federal government, an idea suggested by billionaire Elon Musk, who would lead it.

The commission is the latest attention-grabbing alliance between Trump and Musk, who leads companies including Tesla and SpaceX and has become an increasingly vocal supporter of Trump's bid to return to the White House.

The Republican presidential nominee claimed that in 2022, “fraud and improper payments alone cost taxpayers an estimated hundreds of billions of dollars.” He said the commission would recommend “drastic reforms" and develop a plan to eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months, which he said would save trillions of dollars...

Democrat Platform?

Perhaps some of the Democrats here can enlighten me. Is it odd that the Democrats still don't have a published platform on their website 2 weeks after the conclusion of the DNC? I've been checking each day and as of this posting, the platform link still takes me to their 2020 platform. Any idea when an updated platform will be posted?

Spinning sphere question

I recall many years ago scientists in a lab built an airtight chamber. Inside was a sphere hanging and there was a port to access the interior. The chamber was a vacuum.
They performed an experiment that I'll never forget: while spinning the sphere they injected smoke and as it began to circulate, it began spinning in the same direction as the sphere, only faster. I don't mean faster because it's out farther and to keep up it would have to travel faster.
Yet, it gained ground and was making its rotation faster than the sphere.
Then it occurred to me that weather patterns do the same. You'd think if anything, the atmosphere would lag behind the earth's rotation.
Is this a well understood phenomenon to those members who enjoy such oddities in creation?
I am not well read nor do I process a great mind. I'm just curious.

Are we members of a Civil Religion based on World War 2?

Login to view embedded media
This is an interesting interview regarding the civilizational mythos of World War 2 and how it has redefined what is good and evil and sacred and demonic. (the interview seems to have produced quite a stir)

It got me thinking again about the subject of civil religion.

They say that you know someone's religion by what they hold most sacred.

Do we have an active civil religion based on World War 2? Are western Christians joined to this religion?

There is a strong western belief that a cosmic battle of ultimate Good versus ultimate Evil was 'immanentized' on earth in the mid-20th century. The Allies represented the heavenly forces of Good, and the Axis powers, particularly Germany, represented the demonic forces of Evil. Hitler was Satan.

Evil on earth was vanquished through the blood sacrifice of millions... when Hitler was finally defeated. This ushered in the beginnings of a sacred American-led world order known as Liberal Democracy that we live in today.

Just as Christians used to accuse people of being under the influence of Satan... anyone who questions the post-WW2 liberal order is accused of being under the influence of the spirit of Hitler.

Likewise, opposition to any American led military conflict since WW2 has been characterized as being the same as "appeasement" to Hitler.

Back to the point on what we hold sacred... and what we hold to be blasphemy.

Today in America we have prominent cultural institutions that promote actual Biblically defined sin, such as homosexuality. The apostle Paul's first message to the gentile world in the book of Romans, was centered around the wrath of God hovering over those people who did unnatural things, with the example of men having sexual relations with other men.

Homosexuality is now proudly celebrated all across America, especially by the American government. The general response from Christian thought-leaders is to not worry about it. The world is a fallen place and we should only be concerned with changing hearts by sharing the Gospel. However, when it comes to questioning the enshrined narrative of World War 2, something different happens in these Christian thought-leaders. They become mobilized. It's as if something truly sacred has been tarnished.... it's as if a real blasphemy has occurred.

In my opinion, this is evidence that we are indeed operating in the midst of a civil religion, where Sin has been redefined as opposition to Liberal Democracy.

Lately I have begun to compare this situation to the riot at Ephesus in Acts 19. Not only were the Ephesians personally offended that their civil religion was being called into question, but they also stood to lose a great deal of material wealth and social status. People's livelihoods depended on fabricating metal statues to the city goddess.

I think something similar may be happening to us. Christian thought-leaders who align themselves with the post-World War 2 governmental regime are rewarded with a good standing in society. They are allowed to speak at big conferences and sell lots of books unimpeded.

However, if a Christian thought-leader were to say something like "there were no good guys in World War 2... we should have never gotten involved" .... or "Britain should be a homeland for ethnically British people"... They would find themselves instantly ostracized and banished from the mainstream Christian network, due to their blasphemy in either questioning the sacredness of the post-WW2 order, or questioning the sacred tenets of Liberal Democracy which says nations are now open to all peoples, and to show any genetic preference is to resurrect Hitler.

In other words, there seems to be an awful contradiction in mainstream Christianity, where it is at least tolerable to live in a society absolutely inundated with Biblical sins like Homosexuality (because the world is a fallen place don't you know) ... and yet if someone is detected question the narrative of World War 2, then an absolutely intolerable evil has entered society, that must be immediately exorcised at all costs.

my take on what would be helpful with guns

and one of them has NOTHING to do with gun laws

One have the media NOT report on them When a say this I do not mean literally say nothing about them, but instead to not talk about it for hours, days, and weeks on end. It may even be helpful to not name a suspect at least not every ten minutes after they know who he or she is.

Two enforce the current laws on the books. Here I am mostly talking about charges with weapons enhincments that end up being plea bargained down. Admottedly this one is tricky and a double edged sword in a way The reason it is is that there are so many cases ( in general whether they be gun cases, drug cases ect that without plea bargains the system would not work the state simply cannot afford to take every case to trial and it takes too long with the speedy trial rule would result in many cases being dismissed as the state would not get them to trial on time. HOWEVER, maybe a law saying that enhincments for guns could not be dropped ( unless the guns were found illegally or the case for the gun process part of the charge was weak

This of course with more fouce on mental health and encouraging people to see something say something ( that has stopped many attacks by the way as well. I would agrue would work better thanmore laws trying to restrict access.

The reason for this is because with so many guns the people who mean harm with them who usually have no business with them anyway ( case and point yesterday's shooter was 14 Seven years too young to buy a handgun in most states and four years too young to buy a long gun would get them anyway or either they would come up with other ways to do their damage

Do you dare?

Would anyone here dare to see the Genesis Adam and Eve "fall" more as a post exilic warning to the surviving Jewish community to obey the religious elders and their teachings (God)? This would mean seeing it less as a literal historical eating forbidden fruit. I know that is impossible for some here. But scholars speculate an a post exilic date. What motives would the authors have and what points trying to make? There is a cause of our suffering? But also, "Listen to us"?

Yogic breathing

This is an interesting video. An x Buddhist says how yogic breathing is satanic etc. I guess I could see where it might be but on the other hand, certain breathing exercises can lower your blood pressure or oxygenate the body. This can be useful at night because blood pressure can rise at night and deep forceful breathing in bed can help you fall asleep sometimes. I find it interesting that some Buddhist monks can control their body temperature when it’s very cold out without wearing much clothes. Some yogis can control their heart rate. Isn’t this interesting from a scientific angle ? Is there a more nuanced view that could be taken about such things?

The guy in the video also talks about how martial arts promote anger. I think about some Christians who might take such views and yet promote wars based on propaganda or misinformation when they don’t understand what is going on. I’m afraid that it seems like almost the same type of thing that they claim to be against in that case

Did the Fathers Teach ‘Bible Alone’?

Some Protestants say yes. The Fathers' writings say no.

Perspicuity is the Protestant doctrine that Holy Scripture is clear enough that any humble, prayerful Christian, regardless of academic pedigree, intellectual ability, or ecclesial authority, is able to understand what is necessary for salvation. But did the Church Fathers teach this doctrine?

This has been perhaps the most frequentresponse to my 2023 book The Obscurity of Scripture: Disputing Sola Scriptura and the Protestant Notion of Biblical Perspicuity, in which I present the various philosophical, theological, historical, and sociological problems with the doctrine. If the Church did teach the doctrine of perspicuity, it would certainly undermine, though not necessarily cripple, the thesis of my book. So let’s examine the evidence.

When Protestants argue that the Church Fathers did in fact teach biblical perspicuity, they will appeal to quotations from several Fathers that seem to affirm the clarity of Scripture. Here I’ll cite some of the most common.

St. Ireaneus in Against Heresies declares,

When . . . they are confuted from the Scriptures, they turn round and accuse these same Scriptures, as if they were not correct, nor of authority, and [assert] that they are ambiguous, and that the truth cannot be extracted from them by those who are ignorant of tradition (3.2.1).
Similarly, in St. Augustine’s On Christian Doctrine, we read this:

Submission to Governing Authorities

“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.” (Romans 13:1-7 ESV)

Basically, what this is saying is that, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are to be law-abiding citizens. We should pay our taxes on time. We should stop at red lights and at stop signs, and yield in traffic where there is a yield sign. We should not cheat and lie and willfully misinform or withhold information from those to whom it is due. We should be honest people who abide by the laws of the land, and we should not be those who try to find ways around the law so that we can do what is crooked and evil and sinful.

But are there exceptions to this rule? Yes, there are, and they are biblical exceptions. For if any ruler or government official should demand that we do something contrary to the will of God, or that is evil in the sight of God, we are to say “No!”, but respectfully. Or if they require that we compromise our faith and convictions, or God’s moral standards, in any way, we can refuse, gracefully. And examples of this are Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Jesus Christ, and the NT apostles. We never have to submit to sin.

Now there are other exceptions with regard to what this passage is teaching which I want to note here, as well. Although it is true that God is the one who puts rulers in place, if we read the Old Testament, especially, we will see that he put in place rulers who were evil and crooked and not always ones who were just and righteous in their dealings with the people. And even in Jesus’ time, the rulers were evil people who Jesus chided for their religious hypocrisies, and Jesus did not always submit to their wishes.

Now, when this says here that “rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad,” that is not always true, is it, by the examples mentioned above? Jesus was absolutely perfect in every way, but the rulers hated him and wanted him dead, and so they found ways to accuse him falsely of what he did not do, and they arranged to have him arrested and put on trial, and they called for him to be crucified, and they convinced the crowds to join in with them in calling for Jesus’ crucifixion. And Jesus was put to death.

And then when it says that if you do good, you will receive approval by those in positions of authority, for they are God’s servants for your good, that isn’t always the case, is it? And again, I yield to the biblical examples mentioned above. The rulers of Jesus’ time and of the time of the early church after Jesus died and was resurrected from the dead, were persecuting Jesus and his followers for doing good. They certainly were not approving of the good that they did, and so sometimes they had to resist those in authority.

As a general rule, what this is teaching is true. Rulers are put in place by God, and I agree with that fully. He even has put evil rulers in place all throughout history, ever since the people demanded to have a king over them, I believe (not certain on that). And unless we are being required to disobey the Lord, we are to obey the rulers over us, even if we disagree with their judgments. We are to remain in submission to whatever authorities are over us, provided that they are not requiring that we disobey our Lord.

We are not to be rebellious against those whom God places in authority over us unless they require that we rebel against the Lord and that we disobey him in order to obey them. But not all authorities over us are necessarily of God, but are ones of our own choosing, and so we can choose to come out from underneath those authorities. For example, at least here in America, we have a choice as to where we work and who we work for. And if we have a boss who is a tyrant or who is abusive, we can go somewhere else.

The same is true for what are called “churches.” If we decide to attend gatherings of institutional churches which are not following the Scriptures, but which are compromising the Scriptures to make them more acceptable to human flesh, and in order to not offend the people of the world – the people who they are trying to attract to their gatherings – we do not have to submit to those who would have us lie, cheat, and compromise truth and righteousness, but we are free to come out from under their authority.

And when the Scriptures teach that wives are to be in submission to their husbands, it is to be as they would submit to the Lord. So they do not have to and should not submit to anything that is sinful and that is against what the Scriptures teach with regard to how we are to conduct our lives as followers of Jesus Christ. So, in all submission, either for wives to husbands, or for all of us to submit to governing authorities, all submission should first of all be in submission to God and to his moral standards of right and wrong.

I Surrender All

Hymn lyrics by Judson W. Van De Venter, 1896
Music by Winfield S. Weeden, 1896

… Lo, we have left all, and have followed Thee. (Mark 10:28)

All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame;
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!

I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

IVF is wrong, and so is this ramen

Because it’s wrong

This is not a post about politics. Or at least, it’s not a post about who you should vote for in November — your vote is your own.

But I did some reflecting over the weekend on a proposal Donald Trump announced Thursday, which would require either the government or insurance companies — the details are still quite scant — assume the costs of in vitro fertilization treatment for couples.

Like a lot of Catholics — regardless of how they plan to vote — I was taken aback by the idea. Catholics have long fought against the notion of taxpayer funding for abortion, in large part because of their opposition to being made an involuntary cause, however remote, in a chain of events that leads to the unjust destruction of human lives in abortion.

That’s also the reason why so many Catholics groups fought so hard against the HHS contraception mandate — because people like the Little Sisters of the Poor didn’t want to be a link in a chain that would lead to provision of contraception, and thus connected, however remotely, to the moral evil of contracepting the conjugal act.
