Garbage In, Garbage Out

My dad was a scientist, an engineer, a mathematician, and a computer programmer. He was a very smart man. He passed the smarts to my brother, who is an airplane technician and radio technician.

I work in a call center and cried my way through high school algebra. Just saying.

At any rate, my dads mindset definitely centered on the more technical side of things. So when he was trying to explain to his teenage daughter that what she reads will have an impact on her mindset and heart, he chose computer programming language.

"People thing computers are really smart. You ask it what 2+2 is and it spits out 4 in about .4 seconds. But it's not smart. Computers are dumb. It all depends on what the computer programmer puts into it. If the programmer puts in the wrong info, then the wrong info comes out.
Now your mind is like a computer, and you are its programmer. Those romance novels you are wanting to read are bad information, and if you put that into your head, then bad things will come out. It's like we say in the programming world...Garbage in, garbage out."

We laughed, and I understood. I still kept reading my romance books and hiding them from Daddy. And sure enough...garbage started coming out.

I think it was yesterday I saw a post about what kind of books and movies and music Christians should allow into their lives. Well..,it was more of asking Christians what they allowed, but anyway...

It got me thinking some. And then today at work (super slow day) I was reading the Bible and came across Proverbs 4:23.

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."

Loosely translated...garbage in, garbage out.

What do I allow into my heart? Do I allow books, movies, and music that flagrantly violates God's law? Because if I do, how can I be surprised when I find it difficult to follow God's laws?

I'm not saying that I should avoid everything secular - far from it. There are a lot of "secular" books that can still inspire goodness in a person, or translates information of use or interest to me. To experiment, I went through my kindle of nearly 700 books. After discarding every book I felt wasn't fit, I was still left with nearly 500 books. I found over 100 non religious songs in a few hours that my "refuses to watch any movie over a G rating" mother thoroughly enjoyed. I've never been a fan of movies, so not going to experiment with that. :)
