  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My favorite Bible is an old red leather covered, KJV 1611 that my Daddy used to preach out of when I was a little girl......in fact, when I was 9 years old he led me to Jesus in the pages of that book. I have no idea what it cost - I believe it was a gift to him from his Mother.

The one I use is just like the one my Daddy used up until he went to heaven 8 years ago. A burgundy leather KJV 1611 (Nelson) that came from his 'daddy in the ministry' Dr. J. Harold Smith.

Those are truly treasures of the heart - you'll be able to pass those on to your children some day..

A good friend just received his grandmother's family Bible - it was published in ~1800. It's almost too fragile to turn the pages. There are generations of family recorded in the front (along with little swatches of baby hair). In turn, John will share this with his children some day.

I have a small KJV I keep in my car as I drive around and read while I wait to pick people up, I have a KJV Scofield I keep for when I'm on tour with which ever band I'm on tour with, and I have a Thompson next to where I sit when I get home at night. Of the three my little one was given to me by one of my lovely daughters, I found the Scofield as someone was getting rid of it, and I bought the Thompson about 30 years ago for $18. :)

The one I use the most is a KJV Nelson study Bible, it is big and heavy and battered and marked now. It cost about $120 AUS.

the other one I use is the New World Translation, because I am used ot it so I do comparisons now and search out the original language to see if the words have been altered.

What tools are you using to study the original Greek?

I use an ESV Thinline which is about a year old still in good shape. I like a crisp Bible so I get a new one every so often.

I have 2 main Bibles.

One is an NLT Life Application study Bible that cost $45. It's a pretty good sized Bible to lug around at church.

The other is a compact, thinline NIV. It's good if I just want to read the Bible without looking at any notes on the bottom of the page.

I mainly use a fairly new Holman Christian Standard Bible. It is one of the gift and award bibles. Probably cost less than $10.00 U.S. I also have a NASB and a large print KJV. I usually compare things I may be confused with to the KJV so although I don't really admit it usually I probably trust it a little more than my other one's.

a CRISP Bible...interesting. Do you mark your Bible in the margins? Perhaps not. The Pastor that took me under his wing also likes a CRISP BIBLE, looking like new with the gold or silver still showing on the page edges.

Marking my Bible is good for me as it reminds me of how the Holy Spirit helped me to understand some passages.

As far as study tools go, I stick to the Nelsons Strongs exhaustive Concordane of Bible. Online blue letter Bible, a manners and customs book also by Nelsons Reasonsing from the Scriptures (Jehovah's Witness book) Vines Dictionary and many study tools and books that are put out by the Watchtower, always good for referring to.

May I say that NO interpretation of The BIble is completely correct, especially study Bibles.

All study material I have used is also the opinion of man and at times can be found to be slanted or flawed.

I want to know about people's Bibles. Sometimes when I'm searching for things to write for I come up with these questions to ask people, so here is one. What version it is, how much did it cost, is it a normal Bible or something special, like a study Bible, thin-line, a big boomer or what, does it have a special cover, is it falling apart, how long have you had it, and anything else that defines the Bible you couldn't part from. I know some of us have more than one, but please for lengths sake, just describe your favorite one.:)

I have a lot of Bibles so I'll just tell you about my primary one. I hope you don't mind a Catholic giving their input. :) Believe me, I am not trying to debate at all here, just fellowship.

My Bible is a New American Bible (NAB - The Catholic Bible that is used for all Mass readings in the United States.) It is rather thick. About an inch or two thick. It is paperback, has study notes in it, is in good shape, and was free during my RCIA program. :)

I have many... but my favorite one...

The cover is in bad shape. The binding is in worse shape. Some of the pages are tattered, all of them worn. Quite a few have dog-eared corners where they were bent as page markers. This bible is so fragile and worn that I never read it. It belonged to my grandfather for many years before he died. I wish he could have seen me come to Jesus...

PD It has been a number of years since I was a reader and taught RCIA and perhaps things have changed since the early 1980's but I don't think they use the NAB for their readings. They are very similar but different.

Does anyone use things like Bible covers, special no-bleed highlighters, silk bookmarks or anything like that?

As for me I have NKJV Nelson Study Bible that's big and I also have a thinner ESV. In August I plan on getting the ESV Journal edition, which looks pretty sweet.

It looks like not many have spent 40 bucks on their Bible, which is what I spent. Has anyone seen the ones that are close to 200? They're made of calfskin leather. Is that ridiculous or what?

My fav is the Reformation Study Bible NKJV[notes only, I perfer the KJV]. It's a good quality leather Bible with a nice easy read font, the page quality is good as well, with two ribbon markers.

The main Bible I use is a plain KJV. It's light weight and doesn't have any notes...in total I have 26 Bibles.

Plain old bookmarks for me - i usually wear out the ones that come attached to the binding. No covers. As far as highlighters - I use a colored pencil - it doesn't bleed through and costs way less than the special highlighers.

Depends on what you're going to use it for. I've seen pastors spend a lot on the Bibles they use in their pulpits - and that makes sense to me - they need them to hold up over a long period of time. Lots of those Bibles get handed down throught the generations. My dad's family has one of those really big table Bibles that has multiple pages for the family tree - not sure how long they've had it, I believe its in the hands of a 4th or 5th generation family member now. I'm guessing if someone went to buy one like that today it would easily be a couple hundred dollars.

I have noted how Muslims revere their Koran and treat it with utmost care/dignity and I believe Christians should also treat their Bibles in the same manner.
So I searched high and low for a really good leather bound bible and could only find a genuine top-grain leather NIV Quest study Bible.
I would love to get hold of a carved leather Bible. Anyone know who makes these?

I guess I have too many bibles,if that is possible. You cant read but a couple at a time. My Favorites 1) KJV Open Bible:Study Edition; KJV OLD Scofield; KJV Thompson Chain. As for some of the cost comments I have bibles that list for almost $200.00. Most of the time we get what we pay for. Many people pay much more than that for watches, All they do is tell us time.
It is all in the motive for paying that much. If it is to show off, no its not worth it. If it is to start a family heirloom that will be handed down for generations, yes it is. The best buy right now in QUALITY Bible is the Thompson Chain, in which ever version you choose in either Genuine or morrocan Leather. You can pick them up for about $55-$75 dollars on Ebay or BAMM.Com. But in my humble old opinion, the best bible is one that is read, studied, and applied to your life, no matter what it costs.

The Bible I read in the morning is a KJV large print Bible. It's easier to see in the morning. It's all highlighted and underlined. It was my first Bible.
The Bible I bring to Sunday School, Sunday Service and Wednesday Service is a Cambridge wide margin chain referenced KJV Bible. This is the one I like to write notes in, highlight and underline. The stuff I learn in church by my teachers and Pastor. I want to leave a legacy of faith. I want my grandchildren to open my Bible and say "Wow" and then read, learn and grow.

I wish, upon wish I still had my grandfather's Bible. It was KJV, old and used. I read it shortly after being saved, when I was around 12 or 13. I remember trying to read the Bible from front to back. I made it all the way through Deuteronomy and it confused me. So I skipped over and read Matthew. I still remember reading Matthew 4:4 and being blown away by it. Wish I had that Bible, it would definitley mean something.

It makes sense to pay that much for a Bible, especially if the intention is to make it a family heirloom. Hmm, me thinks me just had an idea. I should have said I wonder what a lost person thinks we then see our Holy Word and see a humongous price tag attached to it. No shame in anyone buying an expensive or cheap Bible. At least they're buying one.
