  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

And I hope you're not going to suggest that calculus, group theory, and the like don't "work in the real world."
Who cares about the real world anyway. Group theory is fascinating, [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse].

Because, they say the people that can, do. The people that can not function in the real world, teach at the universities.
Anti-intellectualist much?

Such a pity that I don't need it. It was probably my favourite part of IB maths. At one point I even rediscovered a theorem about cyclic groups in the middle of math class. And now I barely remember any of it. :(

Of course, that could be said for most of the maths I learned. Damn you, specialisation.

*giggle*

So far I'm working on a BA in Linguistics, but that could change by the time I'm all done. Other potential degrees I may switch to: History, Anthropology, maybe Psychology.
Had I done an Arts degree, it would've been in linguistics and/or anthropology.

I admire those of you who study physics and math and the like.
I admire expertise in any field. I don't think being a good historian is any less difficult than being a good mathematician, it just requires a different skill set.

When I start school again in the fall, I'll be in my last semester of college studying for a bachelor of science in History (yes, I know, that just sounds weird) with a minor in business. I'm planning to go on for a Master's in Public Administration if everything works out.

I have a love for science, but unfortunately I also have a brain that isn't wired up correctly in the visual-spatial area, and so I struggle with complex math and with doing precise work in a lab. Which is kinda' unpleasant =/

Well done!

It's amazing where maths creeps in. Piaget used (very elementary) group theory in his study of child development. I've recently been trying to get my head around this, and it uses a few mathematical concepts I'd forgotten about.

I was WONDERING why my knowledge of group theory didn't line up with that picture, then I realized you were talking about math while I was thinking of inorganic/physical chemistry.

I did mathematics for much longer than chemistry. I'd forgotten "group" had other meanings. :)

Sounds like fun.

Chomsky seemed to make linguistics and maths blur into each other...

It was something really basic IIRC, and I don't think I actually *proved* it rigorously. I was just like - hey, that's got to be this way, and it turned out it was ^_^

This is why I liked maths. It's the best playground for pattern-seeking brains.

Huh? How?

I've recently been trying to get my head around this, and it uses a few mathematical concepts I'd forgotten about.
I tried to get through some serious phylogenetic theory a while back because phylogeny interests me and I wanted to know how phylogenetic inference works deep down. Unfortunately, this ambitious idea ran headlong into the most annoying deficiency of my mental wiring: I can't for the life of me get maths from books :(
