  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It is around this point that we should counter with some terrible biology puns, but the only one I can think of is the one about DNA helicases unzipping your jeans. ^_^

YEC or creationism but 99.9% of the time if you ask them what their personal experience is in the area of peer review or science research they simply do not answer.
Because we are Bible students and attend Bible School. Although before I attended Bible School, I was a Theater Major where we study a lot of the 2500 year History of Theater, Perspective and that sort of stuff. Along with the Physicis of lighting: the Additive and Subtractive color theory. I took a few techie classes in the Engineering school, for exampe drafting and a survery class where we learn the basics of trigonometry and so on. In the real world it was my job to take the plans that the Phd draws up and draft the shop plans for the guys to actually build the stuff. My experance has been that the guys with the big degrees do not know what they are doing and they would not be able to get it to work in the real world without the techies. A computer back then was the size of a room. We did all of our drafting with a real pencil and a real peice of paper. I imagine most all of that is done on the computer now. In fact our blue prints were REAL blue prints made with ammonia.

So I may not have an "advanced" degree. But I got a whole lot more then you got in the study of Ancient History and the Study of the Bible. Where you run into phds that do not even have a 3 rd grade level of understanding about things they want to give their opinions on.

So I repeat many people with advanced degrees are lost in the real world and would not be able to function without the workers that can actually get the job done. Or the people like me that would communicate to the workers for them and translate their plans into working drawings. With real measurements and real math that actually works in the real world. Not just a bunch of pretend stuff that they put on paper.

Please don't get defensive! I hope that we can respect the man or woman who reads Greek and Hebrew as much as the man or woman who solves differential equations, the man or woman who sequences DNA, and the man or woman who studies rocks.

... real math that actually works in the real world. Not just a bunch of pretend stuff that they put on paper.

And I hope you're not going to suggest that calculus, group theory, and the like don't "work in the real world."

After completing secondary school (high school) students can choose to go to college / university.
You can go to college in High School if you want. When you graduate from High School you can have a two year college degree. Our foreign exchange student was taking College Physics classes in High School. That is why he graduated with a higher grade point average. Something like a 4.5. My son at the time had a 4.0 but he was younger so could not take the higher level classes. Now his mom is really mad because his grades have dropped down to something like a 3.5. In a way she is right a 3.5 is not good enough to get you into the better programs now a days.

That is NOT what I said. I said that People with Advanced Degrees can not always function in the real world. I took a survey class, we had to get out in the field with optical survey equipment and take measurements and get those measurements to work on paper.

So today when I look at the data I question and at times wonder that their instraments are that accurate. For example, how accurate is the retroreflector that we have on the moon? But I understand how very, very simple the math is for the expanding universe, the spin down rate of the earth and the receding rate of the moon. With a spindown rate of 1.5 to 2 milliseconds per day per century. Most any grade school student could do that math.

So really most anyone should be able to do the math for the age of the universe.

You did say "... real math that actually works in the real world. Not just a bunch of pretend stuff that they put on paper."

But perhaps I misunderstood your intent.

I had a dentist once that wanted to hire me to work on a house he was building. His working drawing was something he had scribbled on a napkin when he was out to dinner with his wife one night. I turned the job down, I was not interested. He did build the house, but it was a lot more difficult then what it would have been if he had real working drawing from someone that knew what they were doing. I had one guy I use to work with. He would point blank ask people if we are doing fantasy, fairytales and nursery rhymes. Or are we going to get out in the real word and do the job and actually build something. I was never that bold with people.

Can you get it to work in the real world???

I don't get your anecdote. It seems misplaced.

But I can tell you that math has its place.
Calculus is applicable in: Economics, construction, engineering, programming and several more areas.

Often used to optimize processes, like minimizing required building material or modeling the economic market.

There are also a lot more difficult math that has applications, like data security (encrypting files etc).

Because, they say the people that can, do. The people that can not function in the real world, teach at the universities. So in the real world an advanced degree is not worth much more then toilet paper sometimes. Sometimes you need to flip the coin and look on the other side. I am just offering an alternative perspective from the people who got their degree in the school of hard knocks.

You say why don't they respect us people with Phds, we are so educated. I am telling you why.

Or just perhaps you're just trying to say that people aren't necessary good at everything just because they're good at one thing?

I say what now?
