  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

system shock 2 had its moments but once you left the ships and entered the organic levels it just became annoying
system shock 1 was the better game

the only 'scary' part of undying was the 1st time you fought those dogmen and they jumped around.

after that it was more and more of the same and got tiring very quickly.

the two main reasons for this where that the plot and character dialogue where just plain awful and 2ndly the level design was terrible beyond belief

Another game that's really good on scaring the "poopie" out of you is Aliens vs. Predator 2. The Marine scenarios are intense. Pretty much like experiencing the movie. I jumped out of my seat many times playing that one.

Anyone going to be playing Star Wars Galaxies when it releases in April?

im not
swg is more than anything else just everquest in space.

it will have name brand recognition but that is all.
from the specs and what is being discussed i'd recommend passing the game over and waiting for the next generation of MMOGs to arrive

the MMOGs to watch in my opinion are as follows

eve online: http://eve-online.com/
set in the distant future you choose from one of 4 human descended races: minmatar, caldari, amarr, gallente.
unlike other MMOGs you dont get to choose an avatar persay. you only get to see yourself thru the ship you are piloting since your character is the ships captain encased in a life support/ship control pod inside the ship.
the game is due out in march.

warhammer online: http://www.warhammeronline.com/
based off of the already established warhammer fantasy world
it is due out at the end of 2003 but i would be middle of 2004

other MMOGs of interest are:

face of mankind
http://www.faceofmankind.com/index.php?page=home.php&status=1,1,0,1,0,0&lastclick=button0
this really isnt an mmorpg but rather and mmofps

and shadowbane

Wha???  Is the ending different on the PS2 from the PC version?  I thought the ending on the PC version was fantastic!

I haven't tried any of the HL expansions.  Are they any good?  By today's standards?

I have to disagree with that statement. If you have read the FAQ's and followed the developer commentary on the game at all, you'd see that it is going to be nothing like Everquest. The game mechanics are completely different.

I still play Everquest and most of the other MMORPG's that are out regularly. I've been playing Everquest since March of 1999. I see very little if anything at all of Everquest that is going to be in Star Wars Galaxies.

from the specs and what is being discussed i'd recommend passing the game over and waiting for the next generation of MMOGs to arrive.

If you've read the specs and what is being discussed, you'd see that this is very much the next generation of MMORPG's.

Don't know much about most of those games. Eve Online looks interesting. But if it's anything like Earth and Beyond it will be fun for about a month and then I'll be back playing Star Wars Galaxies. I like the concept of the SWG Space Expansion better anyway. I can have an avatar and develop him in a world. Then when I want to, I can hop in my X-Wing and explore space, hunt for minerals, travel to other worlds etc.

One thing I can say from experience. Shadowbane isn't going to be anything special. I've participated in the Beta and it's been disappointing. Pretty much a grief gamers paradise from what I've seen so far. And Wolfpack has a lot of work still to do in my opinion. Wolfpack really missed their window on getting that game to market. It should've been there to compete with Dark Age of Camelot and Anarchy Online. Then it may have stood a chance. Time will tell of course, but I don't see much hope for it with SWG coming out well before it and Worlds of Warcraft coming out not to far behind it. (This is of course if Shadowbane ever does release. I have my doubts.)

I'll still keep my money with Sony Online. They've got all the experience in the market to make a successful game. Like it or hate it, Everquest is the most successful game in the genre by a pretty big margin. The only other MMORPG that has been as successful has been Ultima Online. And Sony Online Austin (the Star Wars Galaxies developers) consist of a lot of the ex UO and UO 2 developers. Throw Lucasarts into the mix and I'd say you have a match made in heaven.

Heh, dang Starscream, we must enjoy the same types of games. I loved the ending to Half Life. One of the best end-bosses I've ever blown to bits. :)

I'm not talking about the final boss. I'm talking about the "big choice you must make which determines the final scene" and which "reveals the whole plot." It was the biggest let-down of my gaming career. It was as bad as then ending of Tim Burton's remake of Planet of the Apes.

hmmmmm i knew i forgot to reply to this post :sorry:

eve online is like earth and beyond in the sense that pepsi is like coke.
(actually that might not be a good analogy considering they both taste like ****; drink sprite!)

both eo and enb are set in space but that is where the similarities end.
enb is terrible. it is childish and boring.
eve isnt. it is much more complex than enb ever was and is by far the better game.

for some more info visit my site
www.evegate.net
on the right hand bar goto = the game > exclusives
we've listed all the information about the game that is in the public domain there.

now as far as swg goes
i have played it and i am not impressed at all
it is bland and boring
and it is everquest in space.
and as far as verant, .... sony interactive as they are called now :p, and promises about expansion packs goes i wouldnt hold my breath.

if uo, uo2, eq, lucas arts standards are anything to go by i would pass on everything and anything that they put out.

save your money for early 2004 for warhammer online to be released.
its design concepts are light years ahead of what swg, and eq2 are.

Bland and boring? You mean in Beta 2 where you’re only allowed to log in and test certain aspects of the game? And then most of the time it’s very difficult to get in and test anything because they are continually bringing down the servers to tweak them. Ok, I could see how that might be bland and boring. But this is simply your opinion. I’d venture to say that if you actually played it, you’d probably have seen maybe 5% of the game in action. Opinions are like ummm "large intestines". Everyone has one. ;)

Could you expound on how Star Wars Galaxies is Everquest in space? Without violating the NDA of course. Since you're an obvious expert I'm interested in your opinion. I can't believe that someone who's supposedly played the game would make that comparison. I know personally quite a few 4 year EQ veterans who are participating in the SWG Beta. These folks are in some of the highest end guilds in EQ and have seen virtually every aspect of EQ. (I myself play in the upper end of the game.) They are saying that Star Wars Galaxies is nothing like EQ. The only comparison I can see is that it's made by the same company. (Not the same division, since SoE Austin is developing it.) and that it's another MMORPG. Are you privy to some information that others don't have? The only people that I've seen that make the assumption that SWG is "Everquest in Space" are the people that know next nothing about the game except that it's made by that "Evil Sony Online and they suck!"

So how does a game that is fantasy based, level based, with set character classes, non-essential trade skills, a first gen engine, separate zones, etc. compare with a game that is sci-fi based, with a purely skill based advancement system, no contained zones, an essential trade skill system, and a 3rd generation game engine?

If you need any help answering go here -> SWG FAQ

And excuse me if I think you're blowing smoke. ;)

if uo, uo2, eq, lucas arts standards are anything to go by i would pass on everything and anything that they put out.

Bummer for you. How limiting. Those listed have made or have been some of the most successful enjoyable games on the market.

I have thoroughly enjoyed EQ, UO, many Lucas Arts games myself. And I'll enjoy SWG I'm sure. I may even check out Eve-Online if it pans out. It looks pretty neat.

save your money for early 2004 for warhammer online to be released. its design concepts are light years ahead of what swg, and eq2 are.

Their site doesn't offer much in the way of information unless I'm missing something. Mostly all I've seen are pre-rendered animations. No actual in-game stuff. The "Questions" section is pretty small and sounds about like Everquest or Dark Age of Camelot. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

All said, I think I'll just stick with a game that is in "feature lock" and being made by the company that has the most experience in the field. Not that it really matters. You have your opinions and I wasn't in any way trying to convince you to play. Nor was I really asking for an opinion (until now of course) on SWG.

I'd simply asked originally if anyone was going to be playing SWG. Simple as that. ;)
