Thomas Welch pasteurized grape juice in 1869. Welches is a large if not the largest producer of grape juice. Welch was a Methodist. Methodists commune with grape juice. If you want to know why wine was sufficient for 1,869 years of Christendom before the introduction of grape juice for communion, follow the money.

Thank God for Mr Welch who made it possible for unfermented grape juice to be preserved for long periods of time, allowing millions of Christians all over the globe to enjoy the "fruit of the vine" at the LORD's table all year round.:prayer:

Why were the Methodists so "anti-wine"? I wonder how they resolved all of the scriptures about wine?

I put them in the same category of people who believe that money is evil.

Well, according to some here, there was no such thing as "fresh grape juice" before Mr Welch.

That's right, because the technique for preserving grape juice came from Welch. He also had the equipment and necessities to do so.

They didn't have all that two thousand years ago. The only thing they had was boiling down grape juice and then diluting it with water, which lasted longer. But the must, which the condensed juice was, didn't last too long either- you simply couldn't preserve food and drink to such extent and back then, it's just that simple.

Mr Welch didn't invent grape juice, he only found a way to preserve it. People have been enjoying raw juice from freshly squeezed grapes (albeit for only a short time) long before Welch or Pastuer came into the world.

We did every year at my late aunt and uncle's place. They had grapes, and when it came time we harvested them to make jam/jelly and we always had fresh grape juice then.

How long did it take for it to begin to ferment?
Or did it even last that long through consumption?

What does it matter really? I'm a recovering alcoholic and I'd drink either, because a itty bitty cup of wine being consumed isn't going to spark a drinking binge.

If it does that communion you just did is having no power over you at all and you need to re-examine your faith for such a minor thing to be used as a catalyst.

Maybe some people cant even drink a little, everyone is different. Perhaps examining our self and remembering the Lords death is what matters most. Maybe that pleases the Lord more than drinking wine. I don't know but that's my opinion.

It may be minor issue to you, but some people have extreme difficulties controlling their drinking urges. The only way these folks can keep themselves from falling into the sin of drunkenness is total abstinence from anything alcoholic.

Unless you are sinless yourself, don't really see how you be so judgemental...

My grandpa was a raging alcoholic. Couldn't go to a bar without a drink. After he quit he had a really hard time with alcohol. Just smelling it could set him off. But he took communion whenever it was offered and never did it set him off. He trusted in the Lord.

And what point are you making, exactly? Are really taking what I said in the literal context that grape juice didn't exist?

You have real problems interpreting context. Either that or you're just being purposefully annoying.

Let's try this again. Did grape juice exist before Thomas Welch?

Not the grape juice that we drink now. :p

It depends.

Not everyone drinks the commercially made grape juice sold in stores today, some still love to make their own by simply crushing grapes and filtering the must through a sieve until only the clear liquid remains.

Juice is still juice.
