Have you ever wondered why Jesus changed water into wine as His first miracle?

When you think of it, the majority of the people at the wedding didn’t even know he did it. The servants knew and perhaps His disciples did, but certainly the festive crowd didn’t. So what was the reason for that? Why not heel 10 lepers? That would have been spectacular. Or, what about delivering a demonized individual? That could have been more sensational. Better still, Jesus could have raised a dead person. Now that’s what I call dramatic.

Nope, Jesus changed chose to water into wine. Hmm! Is there maybe more to that than meets the eye. Let’s have a look.

When the wine ran out, Jesus told the servants to fill 6 stone waterpots with water. In this command alone we can glean four pieces of information.

The number 6,
The Waterpots, which were made of
Stone and then
The Water

Numbers in scripture are significant. They are there for a reason. In our story, the number 6 symbolizes MAN who was created on the 6 day. It is also found elsewhere in scripture. Such as in (Revelation 13:18|) when identifying the MAN of sin with 666.

Waterpots = Containers or vessels. These also relate to MAN who often is identified as a vessel. See (1Thess. 4:4, 1Peter 3:7)

Stone – Note that the scriptures do not characterize the waterpots as made of clay which was the most common at the time. These waterpots are specifically made of stone which, for us, should remind us of the heart of MAN, a heart of stone that changes to a heart of flesh at the touch of the Master. (2Cor. 3:3)

Finally, the water signifies the life of MAN as explained by Jesus to Nicodemus. People must be born of water and of Spirit. (John 3:5)

So what we are seeing in this miracle is an allegory of what the ministry of Jesus is all about. He came to transform these vessels of stone and water into vessels of flesh and fill them with the presence of His Spirit, which in this case is depicted as the New Wine. This can be done through His death and resurrection which by the way was on the third day. Did you notice, in verse 1 of this story, when this wedding celebration occurred?

Yes, He could have healed ten lepers showing His power over sickness and pain, he could have rebuked a demon showing His power over evil and His enemy or He could have raised the dead proving He was greater than death, the destiny of sinners. However, Jesus came for a higher purpose. That purpose was redemption which eventually would cover all kinds of miracles. And so, He changed water into wine.

The final noteworthy item in this story is the servants conduct. These servants are likened unto us, who in faith and obedience, follow through at the words of Jesus and received the miracle of changed water into wine. However, we are also called to take that new wine of the Spirit and pour it into the lives of others. We are to become the Bordeaux of benevolence, the Merlots of mercy and the Rosés of reconciliation.

Thanks for this thread! I like this way of understanding the mystery of God

Let me share/add what I have found too.

Water to wine.

Proverbs 27:19 As water reflects the face, so the heart reflects the true man.
Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart, for God has already approved your works:
Proverbs 9:1-2 Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out her seven pillars. She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table.

Further to your notes, can we also say turning water into wine for His first miracle is likened to Jesus bringing wisdom to the human heart?

How should I put it? Wine is good and bad depending on who is taking it and whether one can control it.

Ecclesiastes 7:16 Do not be overly righteous, and do not make yourself too wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

It is like the way of God. One can walk in them, but another stumble in them.

Hosea 14:9 Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous walk in them but the rebellious stumble in them.

So, Jesus came to make us wise, moving from water to wine. In everything we do, we need “The wise in heart are called discerning (Proverbs 16:21).”

I would agree. When the Spirit changes our water to wine, that wine changes everything in our lives. Our values and virtues, goals and aims change in order to align themselves with those of our Saviour. As long as we keep that old man buried we are on the right track.

Because new wine will not stay in old wineskins, the old wineskins will burst and the wine will be spilt and the wineskins will be lost. Mat 9:17.
Notice that when the wine is in a new wineskin or bottle both are preserved. But when the wine is in an old bottle or wineskin, the bottle breaks and only the bottle suffers lost. That's because only we can suffer loss not the Spirit.
When a bottle of milk is broken or an expensive bottle perfume is shattered, the loss is about the liquid not the bottle, but when this concerns affairs of the heart or the Kingdom it is the bottle that suffers.
Cheers

He did it because his mother asked him to do it.

A pretty simplistic answer but if that is all you get out of it, then that's fine.

He did it because of her faith. you can say she understood the power of faith and exercised it. a lesson for us to follow in order to get to the point where we have authoritative faith and are able to exercise our faith for our benefit.

Also, He came so we could receive the Holy Spirit (wine) before you were baptized by water now by the Spirit. water to wine.

You are missing the point.

The changing of water into wine is a symbolic miracle concerning salvation/conversion. The old dead man having been born of water (human life, water of the womb) must also be born of the Spirit because mankind’s spirit is dead. (See Romans 5:12) Christ death and resurrection allow that to happen.

This Cana miracle has nothing symbolic to equate Jesus baptizing people with the Holy Spirit. (Mat. 3:11) You’re confusing 2 different baptisms. What is found in this miracle of water into wine is related to the baptism of the believer into the Body of Christ at the moment of belief and repentance. (1Cor. 12:13)
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body…” This being the only baptism that counts towards eternity as per (Eph. 4:4-6) “ There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”

Baptism in water and in the Holy Spirit come later or immediately after or simultaneously but nevertheless are distinct and not what is referenced in this story.

I love your reading of this. Fantastic. But I also agree with the previous poster; mom insisted. He gives every indication that he wouldn't have otherwise. But, yeah, that's a wonderful interpretation. Thank you!
