I'm a big Spider-Man fan, and I love seeing him in film. So my protest has nothing to do with the following:
Cast
Director
Plot
Villain
an all too soon reboot feel
return to web shooters
etc
What I am opposed to is Sony releasing the film merely for licensing rights.
Marvel Comics first leased their characters to different studios. Characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Punisher, etc.
With different studios owning rights, the possibility of inclusion into the same universe is impossible.
Finally, MARVEL got smart and created their own movie studio, producing Thor, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, and Captain America. As you'll see this summer, this allows for films like the Avengers to be possible.
People often ask, "is it too soon for a Spider-Man reboot." Technically yes. Tobey McGuire and Sam Raimi are still fresh in the minds of the general audience. So why is Sony doing this? For the money, duh! LOL, true, but that's not all.
While they own the rights to Spider-Man, if they don't use it, they lose it. If Sony loses the rights to Spider-Man, the rights go back to Marvel who then are free to not only make future Spidey films, but if they want, incorporate him with their other titles.
In other words, they'll keep pumping out Spidey films to retain the license for as long as possible, just to spite it returning to their competitor (Marvel, which is now owned by Disney) so long as they can make a profit off it.
Hence why I will not be purchasing a ticket, nor buying it on DVD 4 months later. I don't want to support a system that's going to prevent Spidey from returning to his own Marvel Universe.
As a Spidey fan, am I suggesting not seeing it? No. I am merely suggesting to wait. You'll be able to see it free off of Netflix by the Holiday season, or this time next year on TBS or FX. So fans STILL CAN WATCH IT. But if it becomes unprofitable, maybe that will encourage them to release the rights sooner than later.
