There are older creation stories in the bible itself too. So why choose the genesis one (which is actually two) over the others? The majority of Judaism and Christianity have constantly and to this day believe the creation stories are allegory. Maybe, because it is!

I would think that he probably intended it to be allegorical. On the other hand, given his omniscience, this does seem unlikely as he should have realized that C20th fundamentalists haven't got the subtlety or wit to understand such nuances.
