  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Honky:
Oh yes? So not acknowledging your god is all it needs to carry straight on down to hell. I see. What a bucketful of fool's drool.

Well, not exactly. Sin is what separates us from God. Jesus paid for our sins all you have to do is admit that you're a sinner and accept the gift. Easy really. Problem is people don't want to admit they've sinned so there'd be no reason to accept the gift of Christ.

Some go as far as denying God so they don't have anyone to answer to and can make up their own rules of right and wrong.

My question is, You obviously don't believe in God (which is of course your choice) But why do you care so much that others do? It doesn't effect your life at all that I believe in God so why try to convince me or ridicule me for my beliefs?

Your choice. Don't get to attached to your view, it may well change as you mature.
Aha, now we're resorting to the assumed maturity ploy. Now, tell me, you are the one who believes one's deeds on this earth determine whether one lives ever after in paradise or burns eternally in hell. Correct? Doesn't that strike you as rather an infantile idea? No? OK, try this one, which of us has an invisible friend? No? Still not seeing it? How about, which of us believes that wishing for something really hard can make it happen? Hmmm? None of those things strike you as immature?

Maturity, indeed. To believe in the god of the bible requires one's emotional development to be permanently arrested in adolescence. I don't know how old you are, and you don't know how old I am, but I do know that your beliefs have prevented you ever having been allowed to grow up properly. You will doubtless find that an outrageous statement, one to be laughed off, but any religious person who has lost their faith will tell you that at first the experience was frightening. Then it was liberating. Just like gaining one's independence. You are still cosseted in a woolly blanket of fairytales and myths. They are very comforting. Sadly they are also nonsense.

But as you would say, "your choice".

Let's look at that idea shall we? God sent his son down to earth as a blood sacrifice so we can all have our sins forgiven. Forgiven by who? God presumably. (We'll gloss over the obvious objection that jesus undergoing crucifixion is a complete irrelevance as far as compensating for sins goes, and anyway, what constitutes a sin? Oh, it does get you in a tangle doesn't it?) One can't help wondering why god doesn't just forget about sacrificing his son/himself and just forgive all sins. It would seem much simpler and less bloody. Wouldn't make as good a story though, granted, but then your god never was one for just doing the sensible thing. No, he does the most revolting thing he can think of. Or would it be more accurate to say that humans are impressed by the bloodthirstiness of the story? I wonder. It's a disgusting tale whichever way you look at it.

That's a good question. I've asked myself that many times while reading and posting here. I think the answer is that I just get incredibly frustrated and annoyed to see adults believing in myths every bit as silly as the tooth fairy or father christmas. The world is an amazing place without staining your view of it with religion. Religion stops you searching for the truth of what you are. It means you live in a carefully constructed and nurtured fantasy world. Of course, it can be argued that we all do that, but at least my fantasy world wasn't designed by primitive bronze age goat herders. I guess I just want those who I perceive to be blinded by religion to take off the blindfold and see the world and themselves as they really are. It's quite an amazing sight when you do.

Interesting, you seem to believe that everyone that believes in God was raised that way. I'm still not sure why you would care whether or not I see live as grand or not as grand as you do or why you would think believing in God stops you from finding out who you really are.

I wouldn't mind carrying on the conversation although I don't think it'd be appropriate to this thread.

God doesn't send people to hell, we're destined to hell. God gave us a way out. Its your choice.

Why is Hell the default destination?

Why is there a Hell in the first place?

If there is a Hell, God created it... why?

Doesn't it make more sense that Hell is nothing more than the Stick of Christianity?

Who doesn't want to admit that they've sinned? I've sinned, I freely admit it. I've stolen, lied, insult ohers, hurt other, fought others; I have no problem admitting that I have sinned.

Some go as far as denying God so they don't have anyone to answer to and can make up their own rules of right and wrong.

Some go as far as making up God so they don't have to face personal responsibility for their wrongs because all those wrongs will be forgiven if they just believe. Then they make up their own rules of right and wrong and say that those are God's rules for right and wrong.

In absence of God none of these things would be wrong. There would be no right or wrong. There would be no moral standard.

So the only reason you don't rape, murder, and steal is because you think God would punish you if you did? THAT is morality to you?

Poppcycock.

Cultures throughout recorded history have developed moral standards of right and wrong. Don't be so arrogantly ridiculous.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that we'll get along better if I don't steal from you or sleep with your wife, if you in turn won't either.

Society doesn't need your god to give us some pious sense of morals.

And yet, in the absense of God (both for me, and for various cultures and societies worldwide) those things are wrong. God is not necessary for morality. God is, however, more necessary to feel good about being immoral. Chalking it up to the sinful nature of man, for which you will be forgiven because you are saved, let's you keep a less guilty conscience.

You said that people denied God so they wouldn't have anyone to answer to. I was just pointing out that your lot made up God to do exactly that; they can do all the wrong they want, but they're "forgiven" for it. Yo face no ultimate responsibiliy for yor actions because you are "saved". It's the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card that you can use to justify and excuse yourself from the bad things you do.

Nope. Non-believers don't inherit eternal life. They cease to exist. Hell is for Satan, the False Prophet, and the Beast.
Doesn't that strike you as rather an infantile idea? No?
Infantile? No.
OK, try this one, which of us has an invisible friend? No?
Must be your invisible friend.
Still not seeing it? How about, which of us believes that wishing for something really hard can make it happen?
It must be you who believe this because I sure don't.

Hmmm? None of those things strike you as immature?
Believing those things to be true is definitely something I'd expect in a youngster.

Maturity, indeed. To believe in the god of the bible requires one's emotional development to be permanently arrested in adolescence. I don't know how old you are, and you don't know how old I am, but I do know that your beliefs have prevented you ever having been allowed to grow up properly.
You are confusing faith with drug addiction and/or alcoholism. I don't know who told you that only emotionally retarded individuals believe in God, but they are mistaken.
You will doubtless find that an outrageous statement, one to be laughed off,
Outrageous, certainly; to be laughed off, no. The statement is incorrect, obviously; that someone believes that isn't funny, it's such an unexamined statement.

but any religious person who has lost their faith will tell you that at first the experience was frightening. Then it was liberating. Just like gaining one's independence.
I'd like to know what this religious person felt freed from.
You are still cosseted in a woolly blanket of fairytales and myths.
Another unexamined statement. Who has been feeding you this?

They are very comforting. Sadly they are also nonsense.
Most of your statements so far have been nonsense. They read like a series of bullet points someone has given you and you're trying to string them together in a coherent series.

But as you would say, "your choice".
Personally, I don't see that I have a choice. I know that God is and He is interested in every facet of our lives. I also know He's not a cosmic gumball machine that gives me everything I want.

The people you are describing may believe in God, I would not count myself among them. People who believe and act that way are taking advantage of what I have heard called "Cheap Grace". Believers who are thieves, liars, adulterers, whatever because they're going to be forgiven are, IMHO wrong. They may be forgiven, that's not for me to say. I can say they make the rest of us look like jerks.
