Why don't current Bibles have pictures?

Now, back to why don't current Bibles have pictures . . .
I'd still go back to whoever suggested it's cheaper.

Bibles have a lot of pages. They are usually VERY thin (cheaper). Books printed to have pictures have heavy page stock (usually glossy) and the cost is put toward producing those images. Bibles are often made as cheaply as possible. (Kind of an irony since there's no author cuts to be paid ;) ... but sometimes translators.)

If they were heavily illustrated, they would cost about 4x as much.

With the Bible and a lot of art available in the public domain, you'd think there be dozes of illustrated Kindle or Nook options.

I did find a Kindle NIV advertising 500 illustrations. https://www.amazon.com/NIV-Beautiful-Word-Bible-eBook-ebook/dp/B010R226GG

It may not be so much the cost of the images in that case but the labor to effectively format and produce the Kindle edition. It's not something I am an expert on. But it really shows when a poor job is done, and that frequently happens too.

The labor is much cheaper and easier on a computer than when Gutenberg painted images on paper.

During a Rhine River cruise I took a shore excursion in Germany that included a guided tour of the Gutenberg Museum. Its primary focus is how Johannes Gutenberg printed Bibles. One neat lesson is Gutenberg's Bibles had a lot of color images. In fact there may have been pictures on the majority of its pages.

Pictures add cost, especially if they are in colour.

Study Bibles usually have pictures, though.
